jazzweek.com • July 24, 2006 JazzWeek 8 Industry Q&A: Tatsuya Koeda Director of Licensing/Head of Promotion for Dreyfus Records- Kindred Rhythm Music Group

atsuya Koeda brings the kind of enthusi- asm and knowledge to his job that makes Thim fun to be around. Up for a JazzWeek award for Promotions Person Of The Year, Koeda was obviously recognized for his efforts. But while many of us got to hang with him during the conference for the first time, we also thought it would be nice to pin him down with the insightful and hard-hitting questions that JazzWeek is known for. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: So how did you get into jazz? Tatsuya Koeda: As much as vocal, I always liked in- strumental music. In my mid-school years, I was heav- ily into ranging from Bach, Mozart, to Giuseppe Verdi to lots of Maurice Ravel. While in high school, I started discovering many artists whose styles would fall under so-called jazz-/fusion. Lis- tening to some domestic greats such as Ryuichi Saka- moto, Akira Jimbo, , T-Square, Kazumi Watanabe and Dimension, I became curious about their heroes, whom they were mentioning in their in- terviews. That included John McLaughlin, John Sco- field, , and Weather Report, to name a few. Also, I became educated more about Tatsuya Koeda at MIDEM 2006. acoustic/straight-ahead artists through reading Japa- nese publications JazzLife and Adlib, which were ➤ jazzweek.com • July 24, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Industry Q&A: Tatsuya Koeda (continued)

covering a wide range of improvisational music. Interestingly, one of the first jazz CDs I bought happened to be the Dreyfus album by with Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson. That album really opened it up for me to explore more acoustic sound from that point forward. How did that subsequently lead to a job in the industry? [ J]azz radio I spent 18 years in my native country, Japan. In the summer of ’98, I came to holding an acceptance letter I received from CSU, Long remains as a Beach. At first I majored in international studies to pursue a career at the United Nations. However, during this time, I never stopped thinking about crucial part of my passion for music. I just didn’t have any knowledge about what I could our promotional do to get involved in music world or any available career options. Some time passed, and I started finding out about music/entertainment business programs effort. that are offered by some colleges/universities. I got very excited about them, applied for one of the schools in New York, and moved to the East Coast in the fall of ’99. The major I selected was a business program with the concen- “ tration in music business management courses. As well as business manage- ment classes, I learned many aspects of music/entertainment business through the courses focused on marketing, promotion, artist management, copyright laws, publishing and so on. In my senior year, I obtained an internship posi- tion at the Dreyfus office, and I’ve been with them since then. It’s been almost five years now. Did you ever play or DJ? Yes, I play piano and keys. Although soft synth is becoming more pop- ular in recording field, I still have an ambition to get an ARP 2600 and Minimoog. (It’s an ‘ambition’ since I live in a tiny apartment in …) Do you ever play out? I was in a space-funk band, but I recently left the group, so I haven’t played out for a while. But I’ve been going to my friend’s recording studio, where we get together and jam occasionally. Since Dreyfus is a French-based label, or at least the owner [Francis Drey- fus] is, what are some of the challenges unique to your situation? With the exception of the legendary Ahmad Jamal, and rising star Jean-Michel Pilc, many of the Dreyfus Jazz artists are based in Europe. That situation makes it a bit of a challenge to invite them here and to tour as often as we hope them to. As live performance is so important to build a fan base (even for those who are well-known in Europe), it is certainly one of the chal- lenges we face for many artists. For that reason, jazz radio remains as a crucial part of our promotional effort. We’ve been very appreciative of many of the sta- tion folks who’ve been supporting our European artists as well as ➤ jazzweek.com • July 24, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Industry Q&A: Tatsuya Koeda (continued)

domestic ones. The support we have received for Bireli Lagrene and through national radio/press has begun to bear fruit. We would hope to do so with many other artists, who still have room to grow here in America. How are the partnerships with other labels like Golden Beams working out? Our collaborative arrangement with several artist-run/boutique labels have been working out nicely so far. As for Jack DeJohnette’s Golden Beams Pro- ductions, the fall tour is scheduled for Jack and Bill in support of their re- cent Elephant Sleeps But Still Remem- bers release. Yosvany Terry (of EWE Records) and Roberta Gambarini (of Groovin’ High) continue to tour ex- tensively throughout the country. Al- so, we are very proud to add Ravi Coltrane’s RKM Music to Kindred Rhythm Music Group family. Start- ing in September, we’ll deliver new re- cordings by David Gilmore, Luis Per- domo and Graham Haynes. How does jazz radio fit into the busi- ness plan over there? Something that is absolutely essential, Tatsuya Koeda with label founder . but needs to be done efficiently and economically. What do you think of as efficiently and economically when it comes to Jazz radio? For the term “efficiently,” I try to think in terms of being proactive, informative and concise. “Economically” refers to the operation where it has to be worked with maximized effort, but with limited resources. There was a lot of talk about the music industry and jazz radio specifically during the conference. What are some of your concerns about the jazz busi- ness? As the overall market size for physical products has started to get reduced, the slice for jazz essentially has gotten smaller. Also, we can’t deny the fact that the mainstream sector is more hit-driven than ever, which leaves us with new challenges. The emergence of numerous new alternatives and the shift in people’s lifestyles must be hitting jazz radio pretty hard right now. As much as everyone is, I am very concerned about local stations that are struggling ➤ jazzweek.com • July 24, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Tatsuya Koeda (continued)

since I believe there are certain qualities that non-locals simply cannot deliver. How about a few causes for optimism? I’ve been discussing this with our label manager quite often these days, but the As much as inevitable pessimism has given us an opportunity to continuously brainstorm in terms of what else, who else, and where else we could reach out to in order everyone is, I am for our artists and products to be heard, read and seen. For that reason, my re- very concerned sponsibility as a promotion director has expanded over the years. We’ve had some success with music placements via TV/other non-trad media outlets and about local we’ll continue to pour it on in our efforts. As for jazz radio, I’ve been excited about the growing popularity of Mark Ruffin/Neil Tesser’s “Listen Here” pro- stations that are gram, or web-based radio services such as Radioio, which I think are featur- struggling since I ing jazz from different angles with somewhat different approach. During the conference, I was also intrigued by the discussion on HD radio. I hope the “believe there are receivers will become more affordable and accessible in the near future. Also, certain qualities ‘eclectic format’ on non-comm. radio seems to be expanding nationwide, where listeners are tuning in not necessarily by genre, but by their so-called taste- that non-locals makers whom they trust and follow. Those programs feature a little bit of jazz, simply cannot not a whole lot, but I think it’s a great exposure to many non-jazz audiences. Congrats on the nomination, by the way. What were some conference high- deliver. lights for you? Thank you, Tad. For me, it was definitely one of the highlights to be able to match everyone’s voices with faces throughout the conference. The meetings were held in much more casual and friendly manner than I had expected. Many of the folks probably noticed I was the only one wearing a suit on the first day. After five years of hearing voices, who was the biggest surprise to meet in person? Bert Gambini at BFO. He’s so youthful and energetic! What are you into right now that people may not have heard of, or maybe isn’t jazz related? I’ve been enjoying the new Thom Yorke and Juana Molina. As for improvisa- tional music, I was at this place called Zebulon in Williamsburg the other day, and they had a group called “Now vs. Now” featuring Jason Linder, Panagiotis Andreou, Mark Giuiliana and Avishai Cohen on . That show was re- ally happening. JW
