The Moral Basis of Family Relationships in the plays of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries: a Study in Renaissance Ideas. A submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy by Stephen David Collins. The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved. -

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

J? eJ_J, Dean of the Graduate College PREFACE This study examines the imagery, scientific metaphor, and literary conventions that Alfred Tennyson uses in the Epilogue of In Memoriam, particularly those concern ing the power of marital love. The study discusses the aspects of disorder and order, death and life, and degen eracy and progress. It explores the connection of love with the force that transforms negative images into posi tive ones. The findings of the study are that Tennyson incor porates several literary conventions to convey that love can indeed transform disorder, death, and degeneracy into order, life, and progress. Tennyson draws upon pagan, Judea-Christian, and Renaissance literature. Scientific metaphor supports the power of love, and the images of the Epilogue incorporate and transform the images of the elegy. The members of my thesis committee have been splendid ly supportive and enlightening. I thank Dr. John Milstead, my advisor, for his example of intellectual vitality. MACKIN Temple University Japan Campus, Adjunct Professor 著者抄録 田園詩におけるロマンティシズムが再生する中で、ジャーコモ・レオパルディは自らの詩を書くにあたって田園詩の様式 を認め、使用し、しかしながら同時に破壊もしている。それは、『アッラ・プリマヴェーラ』、『ウルティモ・カント・ディ・ サッフォー』や『カント・ノットゥルノ・ディ・ウン・パストーレ・エッランテ・デッラジア』などの詩に最も顕著であ る。これらの作品では、主人公は自然が完全に自らに馴染みのない、また冷淡なものと認識している。このような方法で自 然というものにフォーカスを当てることで、レオパルディは自然の枠組みから人間という存在を脱中心化させ、自然を「再 野生化」させている。このことは、人間の考える自らと自然の関係に修正を迫ることを示唆しているが、人間にとってそれ が究極的に失われることは明らかに恐ろしいことなのだ。 Summary In the wake of Romanticism's resuscitation of pastoral poetry, Giacomo Leopardi acknowledges, uses and subverts the modalities of pastoral in his own lyric output, most notably in poems like "To Spring," "Sappho's Last Song," and "Night Song of a Wandering Shepherd in Asia." In these works, the poetic subject discovers that nature is completely alien and indifferent to him. By focusing on nature in this way, Leopardi de-centers the human from the frame of nature, thus allowing nature to "rewild." THE SHEPHERD‘S SONG: METALITERACY & THEATRICALITY IN FRENCH & ITALIAN PASTORAL by MELINDA A. CRO (Under the Direction of Francis Assaf) ABSTRACT From its inception, pastoral literature has maintained a theatrical quality and an artificiality that not only resonate the escapist nature of the mode but underscore the metaliterary awareness of the author. A popular mode of writing in antiquity and the middle ages, pastoral reached its apex in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with works like Sannazaro‘s Arcadia, Tasso‘s Aminta, and Honoré d‘Urfé‘s Astrée. This study seeks to examine and elucidate the performative qualities of the pastoral imagination in Italian and French literature during its most popular period of expression, from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. Selecting representative works including the pastourelles of Jehan Erart and Guiraut Riquier, the two vernacular pastoral works of Boccaccio, Sannazaro‘s Arcadia, Tasso‘s Aminta, and D‘Urfé‘s Astrée, I offer a comparative analysis of pastoral vernacular literature in France and Italy from the medieval period through the seventeenth century. Additionally, I examine the relationship between the theatricality of the works and their setting. Arcadia serves as a space of freedom of expression for the author. I posit that the pastoral realm of Arcadia is directly inspired not by the Greek mountainous region but by the Italian peninsula, thus facilitating the transposition of Arcadia into the author‘s own geographical area. A secondary concern is the motif of death and loss in the pastoral as a repeated commonplace within the mode. Each of these factors contributes to an understanding of the implicit contract that the author endeavors to forge with the reader, exhorting the latter to be active in the reading process. -

Classic Poetry Series Francis Quarles - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Francis Quarles(8 May 1592 – 8 September 1644) Francis Quarles was an English poet most famous for his Emblem book aptly entitled Emblems. <b>Career</b> Francis was born in Romford, Essex, (now London Borough of Havering), and baptised there on 8 May 1592. He traced his ancestry to a family settled in England before the Norman Conquest with a long history in royal service. His great-grandfather, George Quarles, was Auditor to Henry VIII, and his father, James Quarles, held several places under Elizabeth I and James I, for which he was rewarded with an estate called Stewards in Romford. His mother, Joan Dalton, was the daughter and heiress of Eldred Dalton of Mores Place, Hadham. There were eight children in the family; the eldest, Sir Robert Quarles, was knighted by James I in 1608, and another, John Quarles, also became a poet. Francis was entered at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1608, and subsequently at Lincoln's Inn. He was made cupbearer to the Princess Elizabeth, in 1613, remaining abroad for some years; and before 1629 he was appointed secretary to Ussher, the primate of Ireland. About 1633 he returned to England, and spent the next two years in the preparation of his Emblems. In 1639 he was made city chronologer, a post in which <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/ben-jonson/">Ben Jonson</a> and <a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/thomas-middleton/">Thomas Middleton</a> had preceded him. -

Looking for Lovelace: Identity, Style and Inheritance in the Poetry of the Interregnum Thesis Submitted by Dosia Reichardt, BA (Hons) James Cook, BA York in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Humanities Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences James Cook University Abstract This thesis discusses the work of the Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace in two contexts in particular: first, within the political and cultural constraints operating during the period of the English Civil War and the Interregnum; second, against the background provided by the work of contemporary, often obscure, poets whose aesthetic and political attitudes help illuminate Lovelace’s own. The study examines a number of apparent paradoxes in the work and status of poets in Lovelace’s milieu. The desire to fashion an individual and lasting literary persona in the mould of Ben Jonson, for example, conflicts with the practice of circulating essentially un-authored lyrics within an educated and exclusive male coterie. Lovelace’s amatory verse is viewed through the prism of contemporary attitudes towards female constancy, but also through seventeenth-century poets’ habitual borrowings from Latin and Greek sources. Lovelace’s attempt at a lengthy pastoral partakes of the cultural poetics of nostalgia for a vanished Court and the genres associated with it. His interest in music and the fine arts inspires many poems which comment on contemporary politics while participating in an immemorial debate about art and artificiality versus nature. His prison and drinking songs have earned him a place in anthologies of poetry as a minor classic, but they also crystallize a conjunction of genres peculiar to the years between 1640 and 1660.
