375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions. -

Mônica Toledo Piza Ragazzo São Paulo Outubro/ 2019 Resumo A dentição é um complexo de caracteres reconhecido por ser altamente informativo em estudos sistemáticos para a ordem Characiformes, como consequência a dentição foi amplamente explorada em estudos sistemáticos das linhagens que compõem a ordem. No entanto, estudos sistemáticos detalhados que discutam a variação observada na dentição em um contexto da ordem como um todo são escassos. De maneira semelhante, apesar do amplo conhecimento existente sobre o esqueleto dos representantes adultos dos Characiformes, informações detalhadas sobre o desenvolvimento deste complexo anatômico assim como sobre a sequência de ossificação completa para representantes de Characiformes ainda são incipientes e, até hoje, existe apenas uma sequência completa de ossificação disponível na literatura. Apresentamos aqui um estudo detalhado sobre a dentição dos Characiformes contemplando a morfologia dentária, o modo de implantação e a posição da implantação, disposição dos dentes em cada osso, modo de formação dos dentes de substituição e padrão cronológico da substituição. Descrições detalhadas são fornecidas para 78 espécies de Characiformes. -

Vice-rectorado de Producción Agrícola, Guanare, Estado Portuguesa, Venezuela Populations of the Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) have not recovered from past exploitation, and current abundances cannot be used for assessing the suitability of habitats they occupy. Growth constitutes an alternative way of assessing habitat quality. Since 1990, more than 9000 captive-reared Orinoco crocodiles have been released into the Venezuelan Llanos. In the present study, the growth rates of 127 recaptured crocodiles from different regions were compared. All individuals from Middle Cojedes and the Aeolian savannahs grew slower than expected by the von Bertalanffy model, whereas individuals from Caños in the Apure floodplains grew faster than expected. These inferences are corroborated with growth rate measurements for crocodiles under four years of age, which were lowest in Middle Cojedes (average of 14.1 cm/ year) and highest at Caños (43.3 cm/year). Low growth rates can be explained by habitat deterioration due to human activities, and high growth rates in the Caños support that the lower reaches of whitewater rivers offer favourable conditions for the species. Crocodiles in high quality habitats may reach sexual maturity in six years, whereas more than a decade is required in poor-quality habitats.
