Chapter 2 CULTURE HISTORICAL CONTEXT The 2010 investigations at the Ashe Ferry site focused on archaeological components that date to the Late Woodland (ca. A.D. 800–1150) and Mississippian (ca. A.D. 1150–1540) periods, and the vast majority of contexts and assemblages documented at Ashe Ferry are attributable to these components, with the exceptions of one Middle Woodland period feature (a single cached vessel) and two Late Archaic period caches. Radiocarbon assays of samples from discrete contexts at Ashe Ferry indicate a primary span of occupation ca. A.D. 950–1150, with continued or sporadic lower intensity occupation through ca. A.D. 1325. Test units and extensive mechanical stripping of flood overburden and plowzone from the site also yielded collections that included small numbers of Early, Middle, and Late Archaic projectile points, as well as a few diagnostic Middle Woodland period pottery sherds. The following discussion specifically contextualizes the investigations of Late Woodland period and Mississippian period components at the Ashe Ferry site with an overview of the current state of knowledge concerning these archaeological periods in the central Carolina piedmont, with broader reference to this span in the surrounding region. Early Woodland Period The inception of the Woodland period (ca. 3000–1000 B.P.) in the Carolina piedmont is defined by the widespread, ubiquitous use of pottery by human populations who pursued transhumant or semi-transhumant hunter-gatherer strategies refined throughout the preceding Archaic period. This threshold is clearly arbitrary inasmuch as pottery production was commonplace among Late Archaic period societies in the South Carolina coastal plain and along the fall line after 4500 B.P. -

Piedmont Ecoregion Aquatic Habitats Description and Location The piedmont ecoregion extends south of Blue Ridge to the fall line near Columbia, South Carolina and from the Savannah River east to the Pee Dee River. Encompassing 24 counties and 10,788 square miles, the piedmont is the largest physiographic province in South Carolina. The piedmont is an area with gently rolling hills dissected by narrow stream and river valleys. Forests, farms and orchards Pee Dee-Piedmont EDU dominate most of the land. Elevations Santee-Piedmont EDU Savannah-Piedmont EDU range from 375 to 1,000 feet. The Piedmont Ecoregion cuts across the top of three major South Carolina drainages, the Savannah, the Santee and the Pee Dee, forming three ecobasins: the Savannah-Piedmont, Santee-Piedmont and Pee Dee-Piedmont. Savannah-Piedmont Ecobasin The Savannah River drainage originates in the mountains of North Carolina and Georgia. The Savannah River flows southeast along the border of South Carolina and Georgia through the piedmont for approximately 131 miles on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. Major tributaries to the Savannah River in the South Carolina portion of this ecobasin include the Tugaloo River, Seneca River, Chauga River, Rocky River, Little River and Stevens Creek. The ecobasin encompasses 36 watersheds and approximately 2,879 square miles. The vast majority of the land is privately owned with only 239 square miles protected by federal, state and private entities. Most of the protected land (192 square miles) occurs in Sumter National Forest. The ecobasin contains 3,328 miles of lotic habitat with 143 square miles of impoundments. -

Cooper Dissertation Director: Dr. Mia Bay ABSTRACT: The history of Sapelo Islanders in published works reveals a complex cast of characters, each one working through ideas about racial distinction and inheritance; African culture and spirituality; and the legacy of slavery during the most turbulent years in America’s race-making history. Feuding social scientists, adventure seeking journalists, amateur folklorists, and other writers, initiated and shaped the perception of Sapelo Islanders’ distinct connection to Africa during the 1920s and 1930s, and labeled them “Gullah.” These researchers characterized the “Gullah,” as being uniquely connected to their African past, and as a population among whom African “survivals” were readily observable. This dissertation argues that the popular view of Sapelo Islanders’ “uniqueness” was the product of changing formulations about race and racial distinction in America. Consequently, the “discovery” of Sapelo Island’s Gullah folk was more a sign of times than an anthropological discovery. This dissertation interrogates the intellectual motives of the researchers and writers who have explored Sapelo Islanders in their works, and argues that the advent of American Modernism, the development of new social scientific theories and popular cultural works during the 1920s and 1930s, and other trends shaped their depictions. -

2012/2013 Entry-level Salary Information for Recent Graduates in Agriculture and Related Disciplines Each year, participating agricultural colleges across the nation provide data to summarize entry-level salaries of recent graduates of their programs. The information is useful to help illustrate industry trends and provide appropriate baselines for both students and employers. The summary, which is coordinated by Iowa State University, includes information collected by career services offi ces from December 2012 and May 2013 undergraduates. After the data are tabulated, the summary is fi nalized in August of each year and disseminated to contributing schools for appropriate use.
