2016 STAGS LEAP DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON Our steep, densely planted Stags Leap District estate has been the heart of the winery since Pine Ridge Vineyards was founded here in a farmhouse in 1978. This wine is a pure and exquisite expression of the world-famous Stags Leap District AVA. VINEYARDS The Stags Leap District’s moderate temperature, influenced by the San Pablo Bay, leads to slow, even fruit development throughout the growing season. The majority of our 47 acres across four estate vineyards in this region are densely planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties on steeply terraced hillsides with Bale clay-loam soils, resulting in very low yields of intensely flavored grapes. HARVEST The 2016 harvest marks the fifth great vintage in a row. Although it was another drought year and yields tended to be a bit lower, the quality was very high. The year started out hot, then became cold, then turned hot again, and October began one of the heaviest rain seasons this region has seen in many years. WINEMAKING The berries were hand harvested at night, carefully sorted, and destemmed to tank, where fermentation took place. Then, the wine was racked to 100 percent new French oak barrels, where it was aged for 27 months prior to bottling. TASTING NOTES Pencil shavings, dark plum, coffee, hazelnut, bing cherry, and cinnamon graham cracker aromas jump from the glass. The sweet, ripe entry reveals toasty oak and rich layered flavors mimicking the aromas. The fruit carries through to the finish, which is long, spicy, and brooding. This is an elegant wine to enjoy now or save and watch it develop further. Wine Country Travel Advice for Yountville and Stags Leap District
Two Guys From Napa Yountville and Stags Leap District Essentially parallel to each other, the Yountville and Stags Leap District appellations in Napa Valley are both moderate regions cooled down by afternoon marine winds. However, Yountville is influenced more by morning fog, and the bare rocks of Stags Leap reflect heat and sunshine, so the Stags Leap AVA can be up to 10 degrees warmer than the Yountville AVA. Both areas are primarily known for their Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons. Stags Leap District Favorite Tasting Rooms in Yountville and Stags Leap District Baldacci Family Vineyards – With only 17 acres on their Stags Leap Disrict property, the Baldaccis craft premium wines with minimal handling of the grapes. Their reputation is largely based on their limited production Cabernet Sauvignons. Owners Thomas and Brenda Baldacci head the family and Michael (one of their four sons) is the Director of Operations at the winery. Our favorite wines include the Brenda’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Black Label (SLD) Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is currently in the middle of a major property upgrade, and wine tastings will commence again in June 2017 by appointment only. 6236 Silverado Trail, Napa (707) 944-9261 [reservation required] Beau Vigne – Intense, balanced and rich Cabernet Sauvignons are served at this tasting room in Yountville. The wines are served in Riedel’s XL (think really big) wine glasses which make the tasting experience a very elegant one. Beau Vigne is owned by Ed and Trish Snider, a former head football coach from St. Helena High School and his wife, and some of his former students are now manning the tasting room.

Stags Leap AVA celebrates 25th anniversary A controversial beginning led to acclaim JANUARY 30, 2014 7:30 PM • PAUL FRANSON The Stags Leap District American Viticultural Area (AVA) celebrates its 25th anniversary this year as one of the most distinctive grapegrowing corners of Napa Valley. When it was formed in 1989, the Napa Valley had only been subdivided into two other AVAs, Howell Mountain and Carneros. Now almost the whole valley is chopped into separate AVAs. The Stags Leap District is on the eastern edge of Napa Valley among the foothills of the Vaca mountain range. Barely one mile wide and three miles long, this tiny region is universally acclaimed for the power and elegance of its cabernet sauvignon. Stags Leap District has been a grapegrowing region since the mid-1800s, though the first cabernet sauvignon vines weren’t planted until 1961 by Nathan Fay. His fruit was in high demand from winemakers throughout the early 1970s. In 1976, the famed Judgment of Paris catapulted the region into the global spotlight when French judges awarded a 1973 cabernet sauvignon from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars made by Warren Winiarski first place over legendary Bordeaux producers. Ten years later, when the same wines were tasted blind a second time, top honors again went to a Stags Leap wine — the 1972 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon. An AVA is born The idea for the AVA came from John Shafer and Dick Steltzner, two vintners with vineyards in the area. “We heard from both consumers and wine writers that our cabernets were distinct from others in Napa Valley, powerful but silky and velvety,” said Shafer.
