318 Zena Crown Vineyard Sum Pinot Noir presents June 22 and July 20-22, 2017 Please bring this catalog with you to l’Eté du Vin on Saturday night. l’Eté du Vin | 1 From the Chairs Dear Friends of l’Eté du Vin, Loren and I sincerely appreciate your support for l’Eté du Vin and our collective and singular goal to win the fight against cancer. For most of us, cancer is much more than just a word, it is a story of triumph and of tragedy; triumph for those, including my daughter, Kelsey, who have fought the battle and won and a story of tragedy for so many others. Michael Sontag & Loren Chumley Through the many Nashville Wine Auction events and with your generous support, we can all make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, whether through funding research in an effort to find a cure, providing financial assistance to families that have been affected by the disease, or in granting a wish that gives a needed glimmer of “normalcy” to those having to view life through the sometimes cloudy lens of treatment. Amid the numerous stories of triumph and tragedy, we choose to celebrate the gift of life with some of the most esteemed winemakers in California: Schramsberg Vineyards, Davies Vineyards, Hirsch Vineyards, PlumpJack Estate Winery, CADE Estate Winery, and Odette Estate Winery. Without their support this event would not be possible. Beyond these vintners, a most deserved thank you to Holly Whaley and the amazing Nashville Wine Auction team, to our sponsors, our volunteers and all of those who give their time and talent to make this evening possible. We are truly honored to co-chair this event and raise our paddles in this collective effort to replace the all too numerous stories of tragedy with triumph. Sincerely, Michael Sontag Loren Chumley Michael Sontag Loren Chumley 2 | l’Eté du Vin Table of Contents Our Mission .............................................. 13 Featured Guests ......................................... 27 Events Grand Cru & Norman M. For those who’ve been participating for years, it seems simple; but for a newcomer, it can be overwhelming. Let us offer you some helpful tips so you won’t miss out on any of the fun. The Silent Auction is for Everyone By purchasing a ticket to any of the l’Eté du Vin events, you can participate in the Silent Auction. Since this auction is conducted via mobile bidding, you’ll receive text updates inviting you to participate... Even if you are in your living room! But we must have your cell phone number and your credit card registered. If you don’t receive the welcome text by Wednesday afternoon, call the office at (615) 329-1760. This Catalog is a Goldmine We encourage everyone to read this catalog and do your research before the auction! There is a wealth of information contained within regarding the cause you’ll be supporting, the special guests you’ll be meeting, the wines you’ll be drinking, the lots we are selling, and even future Nashville Wine Auction events. Feel free to flag your favorite lots or make notes in the margin and bring this book with you on auction night. More Wine? All of our events feature outstanding wines, but you are welcomed to bring your cellar favorites to share. When you arrive at the party, a volunteer can assist you with getting your wine to your table. Checks are More than Welcome Any time you can write a check to pay for your purchases, you will be helping defray our credit card costs. And when that happens, we can send more money to our beneficiaries to help fund the fight against cancer. Consider putting a check in your pocket when you come to our events. Bidding in the Live Auction Our Live Auctions are exciting, and they move quickly. Following along in your (pre-marked) catalog and watching the screens will help you keep up. If you want to bid, bid quickly and in a big way. Stand up, wave your hand so the auctioneer can see you. If you try to wait until the last second, you risk not being seen. Also, check out the auction rules on page 214 to review the different types of lots we offer. l’Eté du Vin | 5 Spencer Hays 1936-2017 We owe immense gratitude to Spencer Hays, a Nashville Wine Auction “founding father,” who passed away earlier this year. l’Eté du Vin would not have existed had it not been for the generosity of Spencer and Marlene Hays. In fact, we would not be sitting here without their support and passion for our organization during its inception. In 1980, organizers were prohibited from using a commercial establishment or hotel where tickets would be “sold” to attend a function where donated wines would be poured. Spencer and Marlene opened their lovely home on Westview Avenue to nearly 200 invited “guests” on a lovely summer evening. While only $3,000 to 6,000 was raised (depending on who’s telling the story), magic was created and the rest is history. $21 million later, the legacy of these humble beginnings continues today, as we continue uniting the wine community to fund the fight against cancer. Spencer Hays started his career at the Southwestern Company in 1956 and eventually became the majority owner of the company. He also founded Tom James Co., a fine clothing firm, in 1966 and purchased Oxford Clothes, high-end men’s suit and sport coat manufacturer, in 1994. He was the owner of Athlon Sports Communications, a publisher of sports manuals. He was even inducted into the hall of fame of the Direct Selling Association in 1983. His appreciation for art is unparalleled. Spencer and Marlene began collecting American art in the 1970s and later French art in the 1980s. They co-founded the American Friends of the Musée d’Orsay in 2013, serving on its board of directors. Marlene and Spencer received the Officer badge of the Legion of Honor. One esteemed honor among many in Hays’ lifetime. Though we cannot offer a grand reception in France for the generosity and spirit of this beloved man, we can pay tribute to Spencer Hays in the best way we know how… by raising a glass in his memory and pledging to continue to fund the fight in his honor. Here’s to you, Mr. Hays. 6 | l’Eté du Vin Nashville Wine Auction would like to thank our Sponsors for helping us fulfill our mission. The organization’s primary focus is its series of wine related events and activities. All activities operate within a framework of social and educational events, thus stimulating an environment of natural giving by those who love and appreciate wine. Toward that end, the Nashville Wine Auction cultivates participation with domestic and international wine communities to work in conjunction with businesses, restaurants, entertainment, and communications firms as well as individuals united in the common goal of winning the battle against cancer. Our Mission | 13 Our History It began simply enough. In the summer of 1980, a group of Nashville friends, led by Tennessean critic Homer Blitch and businessman Thomas J. Milam, were looking for a new and entertaining way to raise funds for charity. What was needed was something elegant but relaxed, an evening filled with good food, great wine, and the laughter of friends. Then inspiration struck: an auction of favorite wines. Most of the bottles sold at the first (Un) Eté du Vin, A Summer of Wine, auction were opened and shared on the spot, with some $3,000 raised. Since that evening in 1980 the Nashville Wine Auction has raised more than $21 million for organizations whose purpose is directly related to treatment, patient care and the eradication of cancer.

He graduated from Bad Kreuznach Wine College and worked as a winemaker in various wine regions of Germany and acquired a reputation in Germany for uncompromising commitment to excellence, “Everything given to the wine, the stars of the show.” Stemmler was brought to Northern California in 1961 by brothers Robert and Peter Mondavi of Charles Krug Winery in Napa Valley to solve the problem of secondary fermentations in bottled wines. He was the winemaker at Charles Krug for seven years at a time when the Mondavi brothers began to take over their father’s winery. He consulted for several notable wineries including Inglenook, St. Clement and Raymond, and was hired at Simi in 1970 to reactivate the old Simi Winery in Healdsburg. In 1977, Stemmler opened his own eponymous winery in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County in partnership with Trumbull Webb Kelly who was a former educator that managed the tasting room and retail sales. The tasting room at 3805 Lambert Bridge Road in Healdsburg first opened in 1985. I can remember visiting the original tasting room and Robert Stemmler was one of the first Pinot Noirs I cut my teeth on. Stemmler produced a variety of wines including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir and by 1986 production had reached 12,000 cases, including 3,000 to 5,000 cases of Pinot Noir.
