The article considers the earth dam of the run-of-river unit – Kuibyshev hydroelectric power station on the Volga river (Russia). The main parameters of the earth dam, peculiarities of its erection and operation are described. The article notes the importance of ensuring a high degree of reliability of water structures constructed near major cities. It is especially important to monitor the condition of retaining structures with long service life. The factors influencing the change of the initial design conditions of operation of the Kuibyshev run-of-river unit dam are discussed. The results of examination of the geometric parameters of the body of the dam, performed at different periods of its maintenance, are analyzed. Examination results revealed significant deviations of the elevation marks of the earth dam surface on the upstream side from the design values. Possible causes of the discrepancy between these parameters and the design solutions are considered. The conclusion is drawn that the most likely reason for these features of the dam design lies in the initial incompleteness of construction. The measures for carrying out repair work to improve the reliability of the earth dam are being recommended. 1 Introduction At present, ensuring reliable operation of retaining water structures is a very urgent requirement for both operating enterprises and design organizations [1, 2].

The program is a significant part of the museum’s and the company’s collaborative efforts, and entails Samsung investing in the restoration of technological masterpieces of the past. Collaborative plans to update equipment and video content about the Hermitage’s collection in 2016 were also announced. In May 2016 ultra-high definition (4K) videos allowing visitors to study the museum’s treasures and interiors in minute detail will be available in the exhibition halls. The videos will be shown on Samsung UHD Curved TVs, which will be installed on the premises. The State Hermitage Museum’s Restorer demonstrating the work of “The Apollo Bureau” first time after its restoration by Samsung and Hermitage in frames of “Connected times – connected technology” program A large mechanical cabinet from Catherine II’s collection, known as “The Apollo Bureau”, a masterpiece of applied arts, was presented at the event for the first time since its restoration. Created by famous German cabinetmaker David Roentgen and brought to St. Petersburg on 1 March 1784, the cabinet could be used for writing and was equipped with numerous mechanisms which opened the book-rest, shutters and drawers, and played music recorded on cylinders. The unique mechanism was a true technological breakthrough of its time, with contemporary eyewitness accounts expressing wonder at the mechanical marvel.

The Orthodox island monastery of Valaam in Russian Karelia is today a popular destination for Finnish tourists visiting Russia’s western borderlands. Many of these tourists are descendants of the Karelians who had evacuated the area fol- lowing World War II. The monastery’s institutionally sanctioned genealogies construct it as the civilizing force, which had brought Christian enlightenment to the local heathen population. This discursive template is played out in the way the place is presented to visitors, with each highlight telling a carefully con- structed story that promotes the monastery’s significance for the Russian reli- gious and national identity. Yet, drawing on lived experience, as well as on popular culture, family lore and meanings from collective memory, the Finnish visitors break the monolithic official discourse and produce a complex “third- space” in their own measure. This paper is based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted during a homeland visit to Ladogan Kare- lia in June 2010. At the beginning of the last century, the lakes were oligotrophic, freshwater and similar in origin in terms of the chemical composition of waters and aquatic fauna. Three stages were identified in this study: reference condition, intensive pollution and degradation, and decreasing pollution and revitalization. Similar changes in polluted bays were detected, for which a significant decrease in their oligotrophic nature, the dominance of eurybiont species, their biodiversity under toxic substances and nutrients, were noted. The lakes have been recolonized by northern species following pollution reduction over the past 20 years. There have been replacements in dominant complexes, an increase in the biodiversity of communities, with the emergence of more southern forms of introduced species. The path of ecosystem transformation during and after the anthropogenic stress compares with the regularities of ecosystem successions: from the natural state through the developmental stage to a more stable mature modification, with significantly different natural characteristics. A peculiarity of the newly formed ecosystems is the change in structure and the higher productivity of biological communities, explained by the stability of the newly formed biogeochemical nutrient cycles, as well as climate warming.

    FIRST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF RENOIR’S FULL-LENGTH CANVASES BRINGS TOGETHER ICONIC WORKS FROM EUROPE AND THE U.S. FOR AN EXCLUSIVE NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION RENOIR, IMPRESSIONISM, AND FULL-LENGTH PAINTING February 7 through May 13, 2012 This winter and spring The Frick Collection presents an exhibition of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, offering the first comprehensive study of the artist’s engagement with the full-length format. Its use was associated with the official Paris Salon from the mid-1870s to mid- 1880s, the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist aesthetic. The project was inspired by Renoir’s La Promenade of 1875–76, the most significant Impressionist work in the Frick’s permanent collection. Intended for public display, the vertical grand-scale canvases in the exhibition are among the artist’s most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. The show and accompanying catalogue draw on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir’s full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Recently-undertaken technical studies of the canvases will also shed new light on the artist’s working methods.
