SECOND PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE FINE ARTS EXHIBITION OPENS MAY 20

The second exhibition of Photography in the Fine Arts will open at the

Metropolitan Museum on Friday, May 20, to run through September 4, featuring 176

contemporary photographs (49 in color) taken by 129 photographers. This year's

exhibition will be shown in three of the large special exhibition galleries at the

Museum.

Final selections from among more than 800 color and monochrome prints, submitted

through many photographic, professional, amateur and publishing organizations, were

made for this display by a jury of 12 distinguished representatives from the field

of the fine arts. Ivan Dmitri, well-known photographer, served as the organizing

director of the project.

The Saturday Review, sponsor of the project, is devoting a major portion of its

May 28th issue to a review of Photography in the Fine Arts II and its significance in

the field of fine arts. This coverage is being augmented by other national publications.

The Professional Photographers of America, the American Society of Magazine

Photographers, and the Photographic Society of America (PSA) collaborated in an

extensive search through publications, photographic files and libraries to locate

material for submission to the screening and final juries. They were aided by many of

America's leading museums, art schools and camera clubs. Also assisting in the project

were publications such as Life, Look and Popular Photography; photographic agencies

such as Magnum, Pix and Black Star; advertising agencies; and newspapers from one end

of the country to the other.

Thousands of entries were filtered by these groups, with the exception of those

photographs collected by the Photographic Society of America. The latter were first

judged by a special screening panel headed by Norris Harkness, Hon. PSA and past-

president PSA. Other members of this panel were: Mildred Baker, Associate Director,

Newark Museum; Eliot Elisofon, Life Magazine photographer; Adolf Fassbender,

honorary dean of both the Photographic Society of America and the Professional

Photographers of America; Kathryn E. Gamble, Director, Montclair Museum; Gillett

Griffin, Curator of Graphic Arts, Princeton University Library; Una E. Johnson,

Curator of Prints and , The Brooklyn Museum; Harris K. Prior, Director,

American Federation of Arts, New York; Albert Reese, Kennedy Galleries, New York;

and Carl J. Weinhardt, Jr., Associate Curator of Prints, the Metropolitan Museum.

Then, a jury of 12, Photography in the Fine Arts' National Advisory Committee, selected the photographs to be included in the exhibition. Judging was done on a written point-score basis, and individual jurors did not know which photographs were being selected by the others. The members of this jury were: James J. Rorimer,

Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chairman; Frank Baker, Senior Art Director,

McCann-Erickson, New York; Adelyn Dohme Breeskin, Director, The Museum of

Art; Leslie Cheek, Jr., Director, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; Hugh Edwards,

Curator of Photography, The ; Alexander Eliot, art critic,

Time Magazine; Emily Genauer, art critic, New York Herald Tribune; Bartlett H. Hayes,

Jr., Director, Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts; Bryan Holme,

Director, Studio Books - Viking Press, New York; Sam Hunter, Acting Director, The

Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Una E. Johnson, Curator of Prints and Drawings, The

Brooklyn Museum; A. Hyatt Mayor, Curator of Prints, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mr. Mayor, commenting upon Photography in the Fine Arts II, said: "It is pointless to ask if photography belongs to the fine arts for it was born there ...

Fox-Talbot hit upon the negative-positive process because he was so dissatisfied with his attempts to draw Italian scenery; and Daguerre, the inventor of the other process, financed his experiments out of his profits from translucent scenery for a circular showroom called the Diorama ... furthermore, the first series of photographs that now rank as works of art were made in 1843-48 in Edinburgh by

D. 0. Hill, a landscape painter who needed to take portrait notes for a huge group picture he had undertaken to paint."
