(page web) Si les grands traits de l’affaire Dreyfus sont relativement bien connus du grand public, le rôle moteur joué par la communauté scientifique l’est nettement moins. Cet article propose une analyse de l’intervention des mathématiciens français dans cet événement ; il s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux controverses autour de l’analyse scientifique du bordereau et à l’expertise menée par Henri Poincaré, Gaston Darboux et Paul Appell en 1904. N connaît le tragique épisode de l’affaire Dreyfus. Fin septembre 1894, le Service de Renseignement français, par l’intermédiaire d’une femme de ménage travaillant à O l’ambassade d’Allemagne, était entré en possession d’une lettre déchirée en six morceaux, sans date ni signature. -

Henri-Gabriel IBELS (1867-1936) Un promeneur engagé Claire DUPIN DE BEYSSAT Témoin exemplaire du Paris de la fin du XIXe siècle, Henri-Gabriel Ibels (Paris, 1867- 1936) ne se cantonne pas aux milieux de l'avant-garde artistique, mais fréquente aussi bien Montmartre et ses caricaturistes que des groupes politiques plus ou moins organisés. Il se destine rapidement à une carrière artistique : élève à l’École des Arts Décoratifs jusqu'en 1887, il intègre ensuite l'Académie Jullian. Il y rencontre Paul Sérusier (1864-1927), ainsi que Maurice Denis (1870-1943) et Paul Ranson (1861-1909) et constituent ensemble le cercle confidentiel des nabis. Néanmoins, Ibels prend peu à peu ses distances avec ce groupe souvent décrit comme neutre, pour participer à des entreprises socialement plus engagées. Dès le début de sa carrière, il collabore avec des artistes ouvertement libertaires : il devient l'illustrateur attitré du Théâtre Libre d'André Antoine pendant la saison 1892-1893, et l'affichiste fétiche du chanteur Jules Mévisto dès 1891. A partir de 1893, il devient un collaborateur régulier de quelques revues anarchistes : Le Père Peinard et L'Escarmouche, dont il est l'un des fondateurs. Cet engagement trouve son apogée au cours de l'Affaire Dreyfus. En raison de sa connaissance personnelle de l'officier Ferdinand Estherazy, il prend rapidement position aux côtés d'Alfred Dreyfus et des intellectuels qui s'organisent peu à peu pour sa défense en un « Syndicat ». Il fonde ainsi un hebdomadaire illustré, Le Sifflet, en réponse aux divers journaux et images antidreyfusards. Au cours de cette décennie 1890, l’œuvre et la biographie d'Ibels font donc état d'un intérêt croissant pour les questions sociales et pour leurs réponses politiques. -

It accepts as real the images evoked in the mind, though they most often have only a very distant rela- tion with the observed fact. —Gustave Le Bon2 The whole Dreyfus Affair can, from one perspective, be seen as a long debate about the nature of evidence and thus about real and false docu- ments, shredded papers glued together, and forgeries, interfered-with letters, secret and nonexistent pieces of paper, handwriting experts, and discrediting of testimony—about what does and what does not consti- tute the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. From another perspective, sometimes that of hindsight and sometimes that of denial and wilful self-blindness and -deafness, it is about anti-Semitism, about the way the prosecutors in the drawn-out controversy do all they can to prove Dreyfus the Jew guilty because Jews must by virtue of their being Jews be traitors and liars. The Alfred Dreyfus Affair
Video The Beginning 1859: Alfred Dreyfus is born in Alsace, a region in eastern France. 1871: France loses Alsace to the German Empire. 1892: Alfred Dreyfus completes his military training and becomes an officer in the French Army. 1894: September: The French military discovers that military secrets are being sent to the Germans. (One list, called the bordereau, is intercepted.) October: Dreyfus is secretly accused of stealing military secrets. He is arrested and imprisoned. December: Dreyfus is tried and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island. 1895: Dreyfus is publicly shamed and stripped of his military rank. He is sent to Devil’s Island in April 1895. The Facts Revealed 1896: Lieutenant Colonel Georges Picquart realizes Major Esterhazy is a German spy and the author of the bordereau. 1897: Vice President of the French Senate Auguste Scheurer- Kestner attempts to reopen the Dreyfus investigation due to new evidence that he is innocent. 1898: January: Esterhazy is found innocent by the military. Emile Zola writes “J’Accuse” a newspaper article in which he accuses the French military of a conspiracy against Dreyfus. August/September: Esterhazy appears before a military inquiry and gives details of his spying activity. He then flees to England. Dreyfus Returns 1899: August/September: Dreyfus is brought back to France and receives a second trial. It causes an international sensation. Dreyfus is again found guilty under “extenuating circumstances” and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Dreyfus supporters face angry mobs and protestors. The country is divided between those who support the military and those who support Dreyfus. -

The Catholic Press in France on the Eve of the Dreyfus Affair, 1895-1897 Master’s Thesis Presented to the Comparative History Department Brandeis University Alice Kelikian, Advisor In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts By Steven Pieragastini May, 2009 i Copyright by Steven Pieragastini 2009 ii Abstract The Catholic Press in France on the Eve of the Dreyfus Affair, 1895-1897 A thesis presented to the Comparative History Department Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Steven Pieragastini The Assumptionist Order, founded in 1845-46 by Emmanuel d’Alzon, and its publishing house La Maison de la Bonne Presse, effectively spread an idiosyncratic gospel of traditionalism in the first decades of the French Third Republic. This was accomplished primarily through its national daily newspaper La Croix, which became a leading voice in the anti-Dreyfusard campaign during the Dreyfus Affair. This investigation raises questions about the nature of French Catholicism as a whole at the end of the nineteenth century and its relationship to antisemitism. A number of excellent studies have looked at the Catholic press’s role at the height of the Affair. Few have looked closely at the “lull” period between Dreyfus’s public degradation and the trials of Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy and Émile Zola. The central focus of my research has been on the nature of the Catholic press during these years of relative silence. This paper will show that while events and predispositions fed off of each other, the ground had already been prepared at La Bonne Presse for a rancorous assertion of Catholic nationalism and antisemitism before 1898. -

Chapter 5 “Death to the Traitor!” On December 22, 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an artillery officer of Jewish faith, was convicted of selling military secrets to Germany and was sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island in Guyana. Dreyfus steadfastly maintained his innocence and on January 5, 1895, in the courtyard of the École Militaire, when he had been publicly stripped of all his insignia and his sword had been broken, he stood stone-faced and proclaimed, “Long live France! You are de- grading an innocent man!” Turning to the journalists in the courtyard, he cried out, “You will tell all of France that I am an innocent man!”1 Pressing against the courtyard gate despite frigid weather, crowds sent up shouts of “Death to the Jews!” “Death to the traitor!” “Death to Judas!”2 According to her friends, on the day of Dreyfus’s conviction, Geneviève Straus dressed completely in black.3 The Dreyfus Affair would convulse France for the next twelve years, polar- izing the nation. Far beyond the question of the guilt or innocence of one man, the Affair would ultimately be about the nature of the French Republic and its institutions. Dreyfus had been convicted of espionage based on the evidence of a single document, referred to as the “bordereau”—later discovered to be a forgery— that had been found in a wastepaper basket. Exasperated by their lack of hard evidence against a man in whose guilt they fervently believed, the di- rector of French intelligence, Colonel Jean Sandherr, along with his assistant, Lieutenant-Colonel Hubert Henry, fabricated some additional papers and in- serted them into a file which Dreyfus’s lawyer, Edgar Demange, never saw.
