Felice Bryant and Country Music Songwriting in the 1950s Paula Bishop f you were a country music artist working in Nashville in the 1950s, you might have found Iyourself at the home of Nashville songwriters, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, enjoying one of Felice’s home-cooked meals. Boudleaux would present songs that he and Felice had written while Felice offered suggestions and corrections from the kitchen. Sammy Strain Story, Part 4: Little Anthony & the Imperials
The Sammy Strain Story Part 4 Little Anthony & the Imperials by Charlie Horner with contributions from Pamela Horner Sammy Strain’s remarkable lifework in music spanned almost 49 years. What started out as street corner singing with some friends in Brooklyn turned into a lifelong career as a professional entertainer. Now retired, Sammy recently reflected on his life accomplishments. “I’ve been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice (2005 with the O’Jays and 2009 with Little (Photo from the Classic Urban Harmony Archives) Anthony & the Imperials), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (with both groups), the Pioneer R&B Hall of Fame (with Little An- today. August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -
Dolemite Is My Name
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski FINAL IN THE BLACK We hear Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" playing softly. VOICE I ain't lying. People love me. INT. DOLPHIN'S - DAY CU of a beat-up record from the 1950s. On the paper cover is a VERY YOUNG Rudy, in a tuxedo. It says "Rudy Moore - BUGGY RIDE" RUDY You play this, folks gonna start hoppin' and squirmin', just like back in the day. A hand lifts the record up to the face of RUDY RAY MOORE, late '40s, black, sweet, determined. RUDY When I sang this on stage, I swear to God, people fainted! Ambulance man was picking them off the floor! When I had a gig, the promoter would warn the hospital: "Rudy's on tonight -- you're gonna be carrying bodies out of the motherfucking club!" We see that we are in a RADIO BOOTH. A sign blinks "On The Air." The DJ, ROJ, frowns at the record. ROJ "Buggy Ride"? RUDY Wasn't no small-time shit. ROJ GodDAMN, Rudy! That record's 1000 years old! I've got Marvin Gaye singin' "Let's Get It On"! I can't be playin' no "Buggy Ride." (beat) Look, I have 60 seconds. I have to cue the next tune. Hm! Rudy bites his lip and walks away. Roj tries to go back to his job. He reaches for a Sly Stone single -- when Rudy suddenly bounds back up. RUDY How about "Step It Up and Go"? That's a real catchy rhythm-and-blues number. -

Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -

The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of figure of speech and their meaning of figure of speech in two songs. The writer analyzes songs entitled Bullet in the Head, and No Shelter. In this research, the writer uses qualitative research with descriptive analysis as the method of the research. The writer analyzes the lyrics by reading them intensively and giving attention to each line. After that, the writer tries to explicate the songs by examining the figure of speech. From the two lyrics, the writer has found seven types of figure of speech; they are Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Metonymy, Symbol, Allegory, and Hyperbole. The two lyrics have a similar theme, railed against the corporate America. The first lyrics, Bullet in the Head is a lyric about the songwriter criticizes the TV Corporations and other news corporation distract people from the big issues of the world and influence them to be mass consumerism. -

The Big Town Boys
Vol.2, No.26 Week of February 22, 1965 The Big Town Boys * CANADA'S BIG TOWN BOYS entered the pic- ture just at the right time and have reached thefirstplateauof successwiththeir initial outing for RCA Victor, "Put You Down". )41. Recently a deejay came up with a line that pretty well tells the story, "These guys havegotsomething Lib differentgoing for them - short hair" and probably one other very important asset. From the minute you meet the group you'll no- tice a certain naturalnessthat says "the boys next door". The Boys are a little confused by what's been happening to them. Every - time they get together for a rehearsal they discuss the last achievement in their careers as if it was the ultimate. A few dayslater something better happens. They spend most oftheir time marvelling at the development of their group because everything seems to happen by itself. They don't stop to think that their talent and wholesome- ness may have something to do with it. The groupisself-propelled and have no manager. When a crisis arises they contact one of their mentors and choose the best advice. Tommy Graham who heads the group and looks after their interests as well group on the circuit. Volume 3, No. 8 Week of April 19Th, 1965
Volume 3, No. 8 Week of April 19th, 1965 There must be a special mold from which come all Western Canadian artists and their managers. Not one have we met that * has been overbearing nor positive that their being on earth was for the reason of attain ing stardom. Barry Allen is no exception. * Both he and his manager Al Johnson are perfect examples of how to succeed and * still maintain respect for others. A welcome change from some of the overbearing pushy managers and their equally misplaced charges. Barry Allen is talented as his Capitol ,,,..,.__,._ outing "Easy Come Easy Go" Will prove. It all started back in Edmonton on July 29 , 1945. That's when the Allen family welcomed a new son name of Barry. But it really didn't happen until this blonde haired western Canadian youngster reached a height of 5'10" and weighed in at 160 lbs and just happened to be going to high school. His singing and guitar picking made him the boy most desirable for a date but he was too busy playing at the dances. His next step turned out to be a big one. He began to sing with the Wes Dakus group, no slouch es when it came to winning a popularity contest. As a matter of fact they topped the polls as "Canada's Top Instrumental Group" (RPM Awards). As a member of the Dakus group he was off to Clovis New Mexico just to play the guitar in a recording session under the direction of Norman Petty. -
