Hope that’s clear. Yet again, we think it’s an interesting selection and we thank you for your attention and ongoing support. Good luck! MIN. BID FEBRUARY RARE SOUL AUCTION A JOHNNY ROBINSON GONE BUT NOT OKEH 4-7307 VG++ 200 FORGOTTEN WD Robinson made three singles for the famous Okeh label, of which only this one could really be deemed to be ‘Northern’. He calls in Mike Terry on a Don Mancha/Freddie Gorman song, so – probably not recorded in Detroit, but with all the sentiment of that great soul city. Never booted, it would be a tremendous addition to a ‘thinking’ deejay set. Have listed as VG++, but really, only one small mark takes it away from mint. B SEPTEMBER JONES I’M COMING HOME KAPP 802 WD VG++ 200 Talk of the Motor City (item A) leads us to this Detroit gem, a Pied Piper Production leased out to New York’s Kapp label. Quite a bit is known of the recording details of this one, i.e., October 17th 1966 with many of the Funk Brothers on instrumentation and the Andantes on backing vocals but little has ever been found out about the artist herself. She remains a ‘great unknown’. C BOBBY KING IF YOU DON’T WANT MY WARNER M- 150 LOVE BROS. 49655 On the issue copy of the 45 only (not the promo), this 1981 dancer is very-hard-to-find and we’ve not had a copy for at least 30 years! King was a Louisiana singer originally on Reprise who became very in-demand as a Los Angeles session singer. D BETTI LOU & BOBBY DR. TRUELOVE TRA-X 16 VG++ 700 ADAMS Betti Lou was one Betty Smith and as far as we know there are no solo singles attributed to her. She does a fine job here however, playing off the soul-drenched vocals of the great Bobby Adams on Ben Smith’s Tra-x label (which is Tarx Records in effect). Some slight ‘greying’ on the vinyl but other than that it could be deemed to be mint. E THE GROOVERS I’M A BASHFUL GUY TERI DE 002 VG++ 200 All the records on Len Jewell’s original pink Teri De label seem to be rare. Here we have the first release for a double-sided gem before Minit records. This Groovers on a 1966 recording would appear to be a one-off Len Jewell creation – the other ‘soul’ Groovers on A&M, Groovy, etc. were a Fredericksburg, Virginia outfit. F CORNELL GUNTER LOVE IN MY HEART TOGETHER M- 400 101 Extremely scarce seventies soul record hits a very palatable midtempo groove. Although Gunter was a founder member of The Flamingos and was a member of versions of The Platters and The Coasters he actually had quite a number of solo releases (without much success it might be said). This was his final release in 1976 and it sank without a trace, it certainly wasn’t in soul import shops in the UK at the time. Gunter was sadly murdered in Las Vegas in 1990. G CURLY MOORE YOU DON’T MEAN SANSU 473 M- 300 June ‘Curly’ Moore was a New Orleans singer who released around nine singles and was the lead singer of Huey Smith and The Clowns. This fine piece of ‘Big Easy’ Northern Soul came to the attention of the dancefloors in the early noughties and has remained elusive for collectors ever since. H B. J. THOMAS & THE KEEP IT UP JOED 119 VG+ 150 TRIUMPHS Pop/Country singer B.J. had/has a truly massive career and first came to the attention of the Northern scene in the late seventies via his catchy ‘Don’t Have A Mind Of My Own’. Twenty years on and ‘Keep It Up’ came to the attention of the ‘upfront, down south’ crowd. It would not have shamed those late seventies dancefloors in Yale and Wigan but is considerably rarer than ‘Don’t Have A Mind’. I WILLIE TEE FIRST TASTE OF HURT GATUR 509 M- 400 Wilson Turbinton enters the rare soul stakes yet again with another gem on his Gatur label (co-owned with Ulis Gaines hence the name of the label, nothing to do with Louisiana ‘gators as I thought for many years). This is the second release of ‘First Taste Of Hurt’ on the label, but on this occasion is backed with the only release of ‘Funky Funky Twist’. J THE ARCADES THERE’S GOT TO BE A TRIAD 502 M- 275 LOSER Beautiful copy of this quality midtempo item that first cropped up in the eighties. Shares the same backing track as Jesse James’ ‘Are You Gonna Leave Me’. This is of no surprise as Triad was owned by Ron Badger as was Shirley Records – you could say that Badger earned his stripes on these recordings! The Arcades themselves were from Hayward, California and the group contained Ernest Marbray who recorded on Wee. Badger had links to Chicago which probably accounts for the original backing track to The Arcades 45 being on Jerry Butler’s ‘I’m The One’. K RON PATTERSON STORY BOOK VENICE 02 M- 200 Back in the day, Blackpool Mecca ‘last hour’ devotees knew the Carlena Williams on Venice but this Ron Patterson release on the same label avoided everyone. Patterson is a total unknown but carries the superb arrangement well indeed. This would seem to be his only solo 45 but we will bet he found a place somewhere within soul music. L THE DIFFERENCES FIVE MINUTES MON’CA 1783 M- 100 0 Featuring the wonderful vocal skills of Clifton Dyson and the epitome of crossover brilliance! Dyson is the younger brother of Ronnie Dyson and, for our money, the better singer of the two. The label itself was a Washington D.C. imprint and the other Differences were from Durham, North Carolina, apparently. Add Dyson from New York and you have an East Coast collaboration of the highest order. M SHERRI TAYLOR HE’S THE ONE THAT RINGS GLORECO M- 300 MY BELL 1002 Beautiful copy of this early Detroit mover from Sherri Taylor of The Taylortones. She also recorded a duet with Sammy Ward on Motown all of which accounts for her only other release almost 30 years later on Ian Levine’s Motorcity label… in rather a different style to ‘He’s The One That Rings My Bell’ (but which isn’t bad to be honest). N THE CONTACTS YOU GONNA PAY QUADRAN 40001 VG+ 150 Very obscure 1971 dancer out of Atlanta, Georgia gained enough spins on the late seventies Northern scene to be bootlegged. Quite why I don’t really know as it was never a big record. Hardly ever seen in mint condition… this copy is no exception! Nice Sweet Soul ballad on the reverse side has its share of pops and crackles in fairness. O THE SOUL TWINS QUICK CHANGE ARTIST KAREN 1533 VG+ 200 This is one of the records that made me realise that Northern Soul was quite something else when I first came across it. Still sounds fantastic and takes you right back. The Soul Twins were Hal and Harold Degraffenreid – so a change of name was probably essential. ‘Quick Change Artist’ was their first release in 1966. This copy is a ‘lined’ blue issue and probably at least as rare as the white promo. Not mint, but very acceptable, take a listen to the soundbite. P THE CHARADES KEY TO MY HAPPINESS MGM 13540 M- 500 The MGM Charades were reputedly put together by Cuba Gooding after some members of the group on Okeh and Mercury had refused to move to the major label. Two releases for MGM are sky high on quality but, judging by the rarity of black issue copies of either release, bombed out of sight in the record stores. America’s loss was Northern Soul’s gain some years later. ‘Key To My Happiness’ has every ingredient that our genre would want – soulful lead, tremendous harmonies and a fabulously thunderous arrangement. A mint issue like this is a ‘must’ for any N.S. collection. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 JIMMY ROBINS I CAN’T PLEASE YOU JERHART 207 M- 15 The greatest cheapie of all time? Certainly a contender. 2 THE UNDISPUTED YOU GOT THE LOVE I NEED GORDY 7108 M- 10 TRUTH Super 1971 Motown dancer was overlooked for years. 3 DEE DEE SHARP THERE AIN’T NOTHIN’ I CAMEO 382 M- 20 WOULDN’T DO FOR YOU Perfect imitation Motown from Dee Dee. Red/black East Coast press. 4 MARVA WHITNEY DADDY DON’T KNOW ABOUT EXCELLO 2321 M- 25 SUGAR BEAR Fabulous funk but with Northern Soul plays these days. 5 GENE CHANDLER NOTHING CAN STOP ME CONSTELLATION 149 M- 10 Nice ‘star design’ mint copies. 6 RAY CHARLES SOMETHING INSIDE ME ABC 10901 M- 15 Excellent – another feather in Ray’s Northern Soul cap. 7 EDDIE HOLMAN THIS WILL BE A NIGHT TO SALSOUL 2026 M- 8 REMEMBER Huge as a new release but don’t ignore the great flipside ‘Time Will Tell’.
