Januar 2006 Vorwort Der vorliegende Bericht stellt die AktivitÄaten, Erfolge und Leistungen der FakultÄat furÄ Informatik im Jahre 2005 dar. Nachfolgend sei auf einige bedeutsame HÄohepunkte im Leben der FakultÄat verwiesen. Die Stadt Magdeburg feierte in diesem Jahr ihr 1200-jÄahriges Bestehen und die FakultÄat beteiligte sich mit vielen Aktionen an der WurdigungÄ dieses Ereignisses. Innerhalb der Reihe 12 Vorlesungen zur Wissenschaft\ hielt Herr Prof. Dr. Graham Horton einen Vor- " trag und unter den 10 nominierten Magdeburgern, die furÄ die traditionelle Wahl zum Magdeburger des Jahres\ 2005 vorgesehen waren, war auch Herr Prof. Dr. Claus Rau- " tenstrauch. Er belegte schlie¼lich Platz 6. Dazu gratulieren wir. Au¼erdem beteiligte sich die FakultÄat am Sachsen-Anhalt-Tag, der in Magdeburg stattfand. Ein HÄohepunkt im Leben der FakultÄat war die Ehrenpromotion von Herrn Prof. Dr. Henning Kagermann, Vorstandssprecher der SAP AG, Walldorf, im September 2005 in der Johanniskirche in Magdeburg. Er wurde in Anerkennung seiner herausragenden Verdienste um die FÄorderung der Wirtschaftsinformatik mit dieser Auszeichnung geehrt. Herrn PD Dr. Thomas Schulze wurde vom Kultusminister mit Datum vom 31. Mai 2005 der Titel Au¼erplanmÄa¼iger Professor\ verliehen. " In der Lehre bereitet sich die FakultÄat auf die Umgestaltung aller StudiengÄange auf das international standardisierte System der Bachelor- und MasterstudiengÄange vor, welche ab dem Wintersemester 2006/07 die bisherigen DiplomstudiengÄange ersetzen werden. Im Januar 2005 wurde erstmalig an der FakultÄat ein Studiendekan gewÄahlt, Herr Prof. Dr. Graham Horton, der auch diesen Prozess der Umgestaltung leitet. Es gibt nun den ersten Absolventen im Studiengang Ingenieurinformatik { Falko Werner, der sein Studium vorzeitig nach 4 1/2 Jahren am 11. MÄarz 2005 mit Bestnote abschloss. Betreuer war Herr Prof. Dr. Georg Paul. Im MÄarz 2005 war die FakultÄat Ausrichter der 29. Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft furÄ Klassi¯kation unter dem Titel From Data and Information Analysis to Knowledge Engi- " neering\ mit 324 Teilnehmern aus 23 LÄandern. Dies zeigt die internationale Anerkennung der FakultÄat in der Forschung. In Syrien wurde nach Vorbild der Magdeburger UniversitÄat eine deutsch-syrische Uni- versitÄat erÄo®net. Diese private UniversitÄat wird von einer Vereinigung christlich-syrischer Familien betrieben. Sie liegt nahe der Stadt Homs in der Region Wadi im Westen Syriens. Herr Prof. Dr. Claus Rautenstrauch ist dort VizeprÄasident. Am 30. September 2005 erfolgte nach fast einjÄahriger Vorbereitungszeit die Umstellung der WWW-Seiten der FakultÄat furÄ Informatik auf das Content Management System EGOCMS der EGOTEC GmbH. Damit steht der FakultÄat ein leistungsstarkes Instru- ment zur Verfugung,Ä um sich in der O®enÄ tlichkeit zu prÄasentieren. Thomas Schulze Angewandte Informatik Prof. Dr. Schulze ist im Mai 2005 zum Au¼erplanmÄa¼igen Professor am Institut furÄ Technische und Betriebliche Informationssysteme be- rufen worden. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte fokussieren auf Metho- den und Anwendungen der diskreten Simulation. Simulation ist ein Verfahren zur Nachbildung eines Systems einschlie¼- lich der dynamischen Prozesse in einem experimentierbaren compu- terbasierten Modell, um die Erkenntnisse aus den Experimenten mit dem Modell auf die RealitÄat zu ubÄ ertragen. Mittels Simulation wird das zeitliche Ablaufverhalten von komple- xen Systemen untersucht. Die Simulation hat sich seit Jahren als anerkannte Technologie etabliert und ist beispielsweise ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil bei der Planung und Steue- rung von Fertigungssystemen

Einleitung Diskussionen um die Berechtigung reduktionistischer Positionen sind ein schwieriges Unterfangen. Die Gründe für hier auftretende Schwierigkeiten sind häufig inhaltlicher Natur, können aber auch von ungelösten Problemen allgemein methodologischer Art herrühren. So ist zum Beispiel in vielen Fällen bereits unklar, woraus der genauere Sinn der Behauptungen besteht, mit denen ein Vertreter einer reduktionistischen Position seiner Auffassung Ausdruck verleihen könnte – um von den Schwierigkeiten, welche sich beim Versuch zur Bestimmung der korrekten Form der Begründung solcher Behauptungen stellen, ganz zu schweigen. Besonders anschauliche Exempel für methodologische Schwierigkeiten dieser Art lassen sich der Auseinandersetzung entnehmen, die innerhalb der Analytischen Philosophie im Zusammenhang mit der These von der Identität psychischer und neurophysiologischer beziehungsweise letztlich physischer Phänomene geführt worden ist2 – einer These, die speziell Ende der fünfziger Jahre Autoren wie H. Feigl, U. T. Place, J. J. C. Smart und D. M. Armstrong formuliert und zu verteidigen versucht haben3. Schirra, Illingen, Germany Among the many fascinating questions that have driven our kind to perform science and philosophy, the question of the nature of the mind (or in an older terminology: the soul) is cer- tainly the most exciting one. The reason is, for once, that having a mind is a rather widespread and well-known phenomenon: after all, everyone able to read this review or to join a discus- sion on its subject has – in the colloquial view – a mind. On the other hand, so many aspects of the concept »mind« are thoroughly unclear: a number of quite serious scientists and phi- losophers have even concluded that we, as humans, are not at all able to gain a distinct under- standing in that matter. What are the relations between physical and mental events? Do ani- mals have a mind? Do we have a free will or are all our actions just determined by neuro- physiologic mechanisms? These types of questions are not yet answered in a satisfying way. Quite obviously, a lot of social, juridical, and political institutions structuring our daily lives depend on the answers of these questions. They are still heavily debated to this date. Particularly in the light of new empirical methods in neuro-physiology, many contempo- rary authors think it possible to answer those questions anew – and with better hope of an adequate solution. It maps the landscapes of the country of digital images, or, as it was lately renamed, the realms of Computational Visualistics. Like any picture, a map – and hence this book – is a context builder: it allows the readers to ex- plore different paths in an abstract region, to connect many landmarks on several ways, and to establish their own distinctions of figures and backgrounds according to their proper interests. However, a text is bound to its linear progression of propositions woven into the digital fabric of argumentation that only mimics the true spatial quality of images. As an extended path, read- ing this text snakes through the map in the effort to systematically cover all of its regions: the map only appears in the reader’s mind. Not all of the details present may be integrated on first view. After all: a real map presents all its details simultaneously, but only those details are ac- tually “read” that are relevant for the reader’s present intentions. The map reveals its contents not on a single glance.

  • Piaget, Bunge, and the Future of General Philoso- Phy in Latin America
    ISSN: 1984-1655 PIAGET, BUNGE, AND THE FUTURE OF GENERAL PHILOSO- PHY IN LATIN AMERICA Tristan Guillermo Torriani1 Abstract The current state of Philosophy and the Humanities is widely acknowledged to be endangered. This historical essay addresses epistemological reasons and ins- titutional causes of this malaise in light of Piaget’s and Bunge’s scientistic critique of humanistic approaches. As my discussion is sensitive to concrete social reali- ties (or territorialized), I limit myself to the Latin American context, which was highly influenced by Catholicism, Positivism and Marxism. Although Piaget and Bunge are justified in claiming that Philosophy disassociated from Science is too speculative, Bunge’s proposal of reconstructing it as a holistic system is unviable because it goes way beyond a normal research program, as if it were a supersci- ence. However, a closer examination of Piaget’s and Bunge’s practice suggests a second, more modest possibility: Analytical Philosophy can focus on methodo- logical, conceptual and ethical problems within specific scientific disciplines. This prevents the outright extinction of Philosophy, which could in itself be con- ceptually incoherent besides being unwise, and instead proposes its subordina- tion, articulation, fragmentation and diaspora among the Sciences. A third option would be historical-theoretical reconstruction, which Piaget also accepted as an honorable exit.     Bonds of sweetness: A political and intellectual history of citrus circulations across the Western Mediterranean during the Late Renaissance Fabien Montcher Saint Louis University Abstract This article analyses how intellectual and political conversations about the exchanges of fruits interacted with knowledge-power relations across the West- ern Mediterranean during the Late Renaissance. I argue that scholarly net- works fostered informal diplomacy through the use of paradoxical meaning of citrus goods newly arrived via Iberian monarchies, and that this political communication was articulated around concepts such as tolerance and sweet- ness. Between Spain, Portugal, and Rome, I demonstrate how political practic- es and discourses about citruses fuelled struggles for sovereignty during a time marked by continuous wars and debates about the status of religious mi- norities.     Perspectivism and Intersubjective Criteria for Personal Identity: A Defense of Bernard Williams’ Criterion of Bodily Continuity Tristan Guillermo Torriani * Abstract: In this article I revisit earlier stages of the discussion of personal identity, before Neo-Lockean psychological continuity views became prevalent. In particular, I am interested in Bernard Williams’ initial proposal of bodily identity as a necessary, although not sufficient, criterion of personal identity. It was at this point that psychological continuity views came to the fore arguing that bodily identity was not necessary because brain transplants were logically possible, even if physically impossible. Further proposals by Shoemaker of causal relations between mental states in our memory and Parfit’s discussion of branching causal chains created additional complications. My contention in this paper is that psychological continuity views deflected our attention from what should have remained in the spotlight all the time: the intersubjective character (or not) of criteria proposed to decide personal identity in our language game, and ultimately our form of life concerning ourselves as persons. B. Williams’ emphasis on the body was not just common sense. It was also recognition of the importance of giving priority to criteria that could be kept under intersubjective control.
