The illustrious and famed Uncle Sam wants YOU to attend the second annual Capital Certamen, sponsored by the Senior Classical League. Certamen is essentially a Classics trivia game, in which teams of up to four players each compete against one another by answering questions about the Latin language, Roman history, culture, and mythology.

The Certamen will be held on Saturday, 9 Nov. 2002. What better way to spend a crisp autumn day than amidst the sprawling fields and rustic tobacco farms of suburban Maryland, at the Queen Anne School in conveniently located Prince George’s County, showing off your Classical knowledge to all the world!

Please join us as we bring Latin students from across Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia together in the only truly “cross-Potomac” Certamen. This is an exciting academic enrichment opportunity for students - plus, it’s fun! Directions to the school and a registration form are attached.

This tournament will feature no particular theme. Rather, questions will focus upon material typically covered in an average middle- or high-school Latin classroom. Questions will focus on speed rather than on deep, esoteric, obscure knowledge. In other words, memorizing the O.C.D. from cover to cover is not necessary for the Capital Certamen!

There will be four rounds of competition and no finals. All teams will choose their pittings randomly for Round 1. For Rounds 2, 3, and 4, teams will be re-pit based on their total scores. This method, known as rank pitting, ensures that teams of similar abilities get the chance to battle it out with each other. No team will feel as if it doesn’t have a chance at capturing one of our coveted prizes. Students should eat lunch beforehand; there will not be a break in competition.

The Capital Certamen can be successful only if every entering school’s teacher comes to help moderate. Schools should expect to bring at least one or two other warm bodies to help out as scorekeepers, spotters, or filler team members.

We shall feature three levels of competition: Level I (for students in their first year or course), Level II (for students in their second year or course; this includes “Latin I Advanced” students), and Upper Level (Latin III and above). Non-Latin students who regularly competed on Level I last year should compete on Level II this year, et cetera. Please limit your registration to a total of four teams.
