A new generation is born and continues to follow the same cycle: birth, life, death. The question is: For what? What is the purpose of this? A frum Jew will say: the purpose of life is to learn Torah and do Mitzvos. But it also raises the same question: Torah and mitzvos - for what purpose? Or in more simple words: What’s the reason that Hashem created the world? "ש( פ דברים תש מ" , לקוטי שיחות חכ" א עמ ' )18 )18 Hashem created the world with spiritual darkness and evil. The reason for that is, as the Midrash says: "Hashem desired a dwelling place in the lowest realms." – as the term is in Chassidus “Dirah Betachtonim”. Hashem wants his essence to be revealed completely, particularly in this world of falsehood. Specifically in this world, Hashem wants the light of truth to be revealed without barriers or inhibition. In other words, G-dliness should break through the darkness, and from the darkness itself - Golus - should come the light - Geulah. This is done through the Torah and Mitzvos of the Yidden throughout the years of Golus. With every Mitzvah we fulfill and every word of Torah we study we conquer the evil and transform the darkness into light. In fact, we can bring light into this world even by just acting like a Yid on the street or at work. This job is also called “Avodas Habirurim” - the task of elevating the 288 sparks of holiness (which in the course of the years spilt into many more tiny sparks) that are scattered through the physical world. Our task in Golus is to elevate each spark and bring it back to its source, by using it to serve Hashem. For this purpose Yidden have been wandering throughout the world, by Divine Providence, even to elevate just one small spark lost in a far place. Once the world will be refined, and we have elevated all 288 sparks, it will be a “Dirah Betachtonim”, the perfect dwelling place Hashem desired so many years ago when he created the world. That time will be the 'Days of Moshiach', when G-dliness will be revealed even in THE 12 STEPS 8 this world.

    Can the Rebbe be Moshiach? Copyright © 2002 Gil Student – www.MoshiachTalk.com Chapter 2: Who is the Lubavitcher Rebbe? The first Lubavitcher Rebbe was R' Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1746-1812). He was a student of R' Dov Baer (The Maggid of) Mezeritch, who was in turn a student of the Baal Shem Tov. R' Shneur Zalman, the Alter Rebbe, led a group of Chasidim who called their movement Chabad. It was also called Lubavitch, after a town in Lithuania that was at one time the center of the movement. He had an illustrious lineage going back to Rashi and through him to King David. After the Alter Rebbe's death, his son R' Dovber (1773- 1827), the Mittler Rebbe, led the movement. Third in the line of Lubavitcher Rebbes was R' Dovber's nephew, R' Menachem Mendel (1789-1866). He is commonly known as the Tzemach Tzedek after the title of his highly regarded tshuvos (responsa). He led the movement through a very difficult time. The Czar in Russia was making life very difficult for Jews and R' Menachem Mendel tried to intervene with the government on behalf of his followers. After R' Menachem Mendel's death, his son R' Shmuel (1834-1882), the Rebbe Maharash, led Lubavitch. In turn, 20 Can the Rebbe be Moshiach? All have passed on, except Chaim Isser, who is 95 and lives in England. Yackov’s son, Sholom Gershon, is a Lubavitcher and lives in Lakewood, NJ. Yehoshua Mordechai’s grandson, Yechezkel, is a Lubavitcher shochet, living in Monsey, NY, and his granddaughter, Malka, is married to Betzion Cohen of Kfar Chabad. Rabbi Sholom Ber Shapiro, Rabbi Nissan Mindel’s son-in-law, is married to Reb Sender’s granddaughter. Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Friedman is another grandson, living in Boro Park, Brooklyn. 2 Reb Sender was born 1870 in Kamin, Russia.

The movement was based in Lyubavichi (Lubavitch) for over a century, then briefly centered in the cities of Rostov-on-Don, Riga, and Warsaw. From 1940[6] until the present day, the movement's center has been in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.[7][8] In 1950, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson became the seventh and last Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, and transformed it from a small hasidic movement, into the largest Jewish movement in the world today.
