INTRODUCTION I Was Responsible for Arranging the Very First Charter Flight
INTRODUCTION HOW AND WHY I BECAME AN AUTHOR I was responsible for arranging the very first charter flight from England to visit the Rebbe Shlita in New York. This took place in July 1961 – Tammuz 5721. On the 8th of Elul of that year I received a letter from Rabbi M. A. Chodakov, the personal and private secretary of the Rebbe which stated: “I would like to take this opportunity to suggest that it would certainly be worthwhile if one of the members of the group that came aboard the chartered flight from England would write a diary containing incidents and information of their visit here. A diary of this kind was kept by one of the visitors who came aboard the chartered flight from Eretz Yisroel last year and it was really of great interest.” “I would also like to suggest that I think it would be advisable that you publicise your speech to the teenagers, about which you write in your letter, or at least excerpts of it, in newspapers and other means of publicity.” I decided to accept this challenge personally, and I wrote a short account of this memorable visit. I sent a copy of this to the Rebbe, who in due course acknowledged this by writing to me as follows: “I take this opportunity to thank you for sending me the diary, which has revealed to me a new trait in your character, namely - a sense of humour.” As Rabbi Chodakov had suggested, I also read out this report to various youth organisations - it took 30 minutes to recite. -

Chapter 2: Who Is the Lubavitcher Rebbe?
Can the Rebbe be Moshiach? Copyright © 2002 Gil Student – www.MoshiachTalk.com Chapter 2: Who is the Lubavitcher Rebbe? The first Lubavitcher Rebbe was R' Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1746-1812). He was a student of R' Dov Baer (The Maggid of) Mezeritch, who was in turn a student of the Baal Shem Tov. R' Shneur Zalman, the Alter Rebbe, led a group of Chasidim who called their movement Chabad. It was also called Lubavitch, after a town in Lithuania that was at one time the center of the movement. He had an illustrious lineage going back to Rashi and through him to King David. After the Alter Rebbe's death, his son R' Dovber (1773- 1827), the Mittler Rebbe, led the movement. Third in the line of Lubavitcher Rebbes was R' Dovber's nephew, R' Menachem Mendel (1789-1866). He is commonly known as the Tzemach Tzedek after the title of his highly regarded tshuvos (responsa). He led the movement through a very difficult time. The Czar in Russia was making life very difficult for Jews and R' Menachem Mendel tried to intervene with the government on behalf of his followers. After R' Menachem Mendel's death, his son R' Shmuel (1834-1882), the Rebbe Maharash, led Lubavitch. In turn, 20 Can the Rebbe be Moshiach? Copyright © 2002 Gil Student – www.MoshiachTalk.com his son R' Sholom Dovber (1860-1920), the Rebbe Rashab, took over after him. In 1920, R' Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson (1880-1950), the Rebbe Rayatz, took over the mantle of leadership of Lubavitch from his father. -
Attitudes Toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad
57 Attitudes toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad By: CHAIM MILLER In the contemporary Chabad community, study of the primary texts of Kabbalah is not emphasized. Chabad Chasidic thought (Chasidus) is studied extensively, as are the sermons (sichos) of the Lubavitcher Reb- bes, texts that themselves are rich in citations from, and commentary on, Kabbalistic sources. However, for reasons I will explore in this essay, Kabbalah study from primary texts, such as the Zohar and works of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (Arizal), is relatively uncommon in Chabad. This has been noted by the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe himself: “Generally speaking, Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim.”1 Is this omission intentional, a matter of principle? Or is Kabbalah study deemed worthwhile by Chabad, but neglected merely due to the priority of other activities? 1 Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Toras Menachem, Hisvaduyos 5745 (Vaad Hanachos Lahak, 1985) volume 2, p. 1147. The Rebbe stressed that “Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim” since, of the various strands of Chasidic thought, Chabad Chasidus is particularly rich in its use of Kabbalistic sources (see below section “Lurianic Kabbalah in Early Chabad”). One might therefore expect that Chabad Chasidim in particular might be in- clined to Kabbalah study. Rabbi Chaim Miller was educated at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in London, England and studied Medical Science at Leeds University. At the age of twenty-one, he began to explore his Jewish roots in full-time Torah study. Less than a decade later, he published the best-selling Kol Menachem Chumash, Gutnick Edition, which made over a thousand discourses of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe easily accessible to the layman.
