  • INTRODUCTION I Was Responsible for Arranging the Very First Charter Flight
INTRODUCTION HOW AND WHY I BECAME AN AUTHOR I was responsible for arranging the very first charter flight from England to visit the Rebbe Shlita in New York. This took place in July 1961 – Tammuz 5721. On the 8th of Elul of that year I received a letter from Rabbi M. A. Chodakov, the personal and private secretary of the Rebbe which stated: “I would like to take this opportunity to suggest that it would certainly be worthwhile if one of the members of the group that came aboard the chartered flight from England would write a diary containing incidents and information of their visit here. A diary of this kind was kept by one of the visitors who came aboard the chartered flight from Eretz Yisroel last year and it was really of great interest.” “I would also like to suggest that I think it would be advisable that you publicise your speech to the teenagers, about which you write in your letter, or at least excerpts of it, in newspapers and other means of publicity.” I decided to accept this challenge personally, and I wrote a short account of this memorable visit. I sent a copy of this to the Rebbe, who in due course acknowledged this by writing to me as follows: “I take this opportunity to thank you for sending me the diary, which has revealed to me a new trait in your character, namely - a sense of humour.” As Rabbi Chodakov had suggested, I also read out this report to various youth organisations - it took 30 minutes to recite.

Marc B. Shapiro – Clarifications of Previous Posts Clarifications of Previous Posts by Marc B. Shapiro [The footnote numbers reflects the fact this is a continuation of this earlier post.] 1. I was asked to expand a bit on how I know that R. Barukh Epstein’s story with Rayna Batya is contrived. In this story we see her great love of Torah study and her difficulty in accepting a woman’s role in Judaism. Certainly, she must have been a very special woman, and I assume that she was, for a woman, quite learned. When Mekor Barukh was published there were still plenty of people alive who had known her and it would have been impossible to entirely fabricate her personality. The same can be said about Epstein’s report of the Netziv reading newspapers on Shabbat. This is not the sort of thing that could be made up. Let’s not forget that the Netziv’s widow, son (R. Meir Bar-Ilan) and many other family members and close students were alive, and Epstein knew that they would not have permitted any improper portrayal. It is when recording private conversations that one must always be wary of what Epstein reports. A good deal has been written about the Rayna Batya story, and Dr. Don Seeman has referred to it as “the only record which has been preserved of a woman’s daily interactions with her male interlocutor over several months.”[15] When challenged about the historical accuracy of Epstein’s recollections, Seeman replied “that there is no evidence to indicate that R.

  • Translation” by Artscroll, the Rogochover and the Radichkover
Another “Translation” by Artscroll, the Rogochover and the Radichkover Another “Translation” by Artscroll, the Rogochover and the Radichkover Marc B. Shapiro 1. As I discuss in Changing the Immutable, sometimes a choice of translation serves as a means of censorship. In other words, one does not need to delete a text. Simply mistranslating it will accomplish one’s goal. Jay Shapiro called my attention to an example of this in the recent ArtScroll translation of Sefer ha-Hinukh, no. 467. In discussing the prohibition to gash one’s body as idol- worshippers so, Sefer ha-Hinukh states: אבל שנשחית גופנו ונקלקל עצמנו כשוטים, לא טוב לנו ולא דרך חכמים ואנשי בינה היא, רק מעשה המון הנשים הפחותות וחסרי הדעת שלא הבינו דבר במעשה הא-ל ונפלאותיו. The Feldheim edition ofSefer ha-Hinnukh, with Charles Wengrov’s translation, reads as follows: But that we should be be destructive to our body and injure ourselves like witless fools—this is not good for us, and is not the way of the wise and the people of understanding. It is solely the activity of the mass of low, inferior women lacking in sense, who have understood nothing of God’s handiwork and his wonders. This is a correct translation. However, Artscroll “translates” -as “masses of small המון הנשים הפחותות וחסרי הדעת the words minded and unintelligent people.” This is clearly a politically correct translation designed to avoid dealing with Sefer ha-Hinukh’s negative comment about the female masses. I will only add that Sefer ha-Hinukh’s statement is indeed troubling. Why did he need to throw in “the women”? His point would have been the exact same leaving this out, as we can see from ArtScroll’s “translation.” Knowing what we know about the “small-minded unintelligent” men in medieval times, it is hard to see why he had to pick on women in this comment, as the masses of ignorant men would have also been a good target for his put-down.
