Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar, Punjab, Pakistan. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new wheat variety (Fakhar-E-Bhakkar), high yielding, temperature stress tolerant and disease resistant was developed by hybridization between strain 93T347 and commercial cultivar Auqab-2000 at Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar, Pakistan. F2 to F6 generations of this cross were advanced by modified bulk pedigree method from 2004 to 2010. Flag leaf attitude is semi erect and auricle color is white. This variety has tapering head shape with 13-14 cm length having 21-22spikelet per spike. It has high tillering capacity (145tillers per meter row).Fakhar-E-Bhakkar has good yield potential in poor sandy soil, early & terminal heat stress environments and characterized with morphological marker of anthocyanin pigmentation at peduncle and awns during grain filling stage. One thousand kernel weight ranges from 40.00 to 45.00 g. Seed is ovate, medium and amber in color having protein content 15.00%. It has good chapatti making quality. Before 1985 elections, it was the part of district Faisalabad but before 1985, Zia regime decided to establish new district Toba Tek Singh. Kamalia is the Tehsil head quater of T. T. singh but its area has been divided into two constituencies. Few villages fall in NA and other villages are situated in NA. 94. The major bridaries of this constituency are, Syed, Arian, Jutt, Rajput, Rajput Bhatti, Kharals, Fityyana. Before 1985, the main leadership was in the hands of Syeds. Two different groups existed among them; one was leading Syed Nasir Deen Shah and second was under the control of Makhdoom Nazir Deen shah. These two groups ruled over district council Faisalabad for many years. Zia regime tried to dismental its influence and decided to divide the follwers of these two groups onto different districts. Few villages of their followers had been given in district Jaranwala, few were given in district Faisalabad and few came in the vicinity of district Toba Teksingh. In this way, the power of the Syed family came to an end. Now in the existing set up, the leadership is in the hands of three major families i.e. Syed, Arian and Fatiana. This paper presents the historical background of the electoral politics and role of bradrise in the victory of the candidates.     1 Update – As of 13th November, 2011 Introduction – Cause of the Disaster While the memories of devastating 2010 floods are still fresh, another deluge has hit the province of Sindh. Year 2011 monsoon rains started from 10th August caused havoc and created a flood like situation in southern districts of Sindh and the rains are continued increasing the miseries of people in the affected areas. District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tharparkar, Shaheed Benazirabad,Thatta and Umerkot are among the worst hit areas and millions of people are stranded in flooded villages. Due to the heavy and uninterrupted rains number of canals and surface drains have over topped due to excess water discharges. Various breaches in canals and drains connected with Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) have left thousands of villages inundated. A large number of people, including women and children, have been displaced who have taken shelter on road side, canal embankments and other nearby government buildings. Some people have lost their lives, thousands have become homeless, cattle died, and standing crops have perished. Communication system in the affected areas has also been severely disturbed resulting in further miseries. Some of the mobile networks are not working or reception is very poor, similarly internet services are also often not available Proactive Role of NRSP – Rapid Assessment of the Disaster NRSP operates in almost all flood affected area of the District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tando Allahyar and Tando Mohammad Khan. NRSP has been able to conduct a rapid assessment of flood damages. To complete this assessment, the organisation has capitalised its network of Local Support Organizations, Community Organisations and activists to facilitate information collection providing a full and up to date overview of the scale of the disaster, and the location of those affected.
