Portuguese Family Names GERALD M. MOSER 1 Point Cabrillo reflects the Spanish spelling of the nickname of J oao Rodrigues Oabrilho - "the I(id," perhaps a play on words, if the Viscount De Lagoa was correct in assuming that this Portuguese navigator was born in one of the many villages in Portugal called Oabril (Joao Rodrigues Oabrilho, A Biographical Sketch, Lisbon, Agencia Geral do mtramar, 1957, p. 19). 2 Oastroville, Texas, -- there is another town of the same name in California - was named after its founder, Henry Oastro, a Portuguese Jew from France, who came to Providence, R.I., in 1827. From there he went to Texas in 1842, launching a colonization scheme, mainly on land near San Antonio. I came upon the story in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, on the eve of reading to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese a paper on "Cultural Linguistics: The Case of the Portuguese Family Names" (December 28, 1957). The present article is an enlarged version of that paper. 30 38 Gerald M. It includes names due to religious devotion, similar to but. not identical with the cult of the saints which has furnished so many baptismal names. These peculiar devotional names are not used as first names in Portugal, although some of them are commonly used thus in Spain.

  • 1 the Portuguese Railway Network in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century
The Portuguese railway network in the second half of the nineteenth century: main actors, debates, and outcomes 1. Introduction The main lines of the Portuguese railway network were built during the second half of the nineteenth century, especially in the period between 1860 and 1890. The first contracts were signed in the 1850s, but their execution was compromised by the lack of experience of its promoters and Portuguese technocrats, whereas in the 1890s investment was hampered by a crippling financial crisis that led to a partial bankruptcy in 1892. By 1900, the grid extended throughout 2,356 km. It included five transnational tracks across the border with Spain and many others serving every district of the country (figure 1 and table 1).1 (FIGURE 1 HERE) Figure 1 – Portuguese railway network. [email protected] (Received 1 March 2005, accepted 30 December 2006) Abstract – A synthesis of the current knowledge on the bryophyte flora of the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela (PNSE) is presented. This study is based on 7500 specimens, from old records since 1804 but mainly on material collected recently. Three hundred and eighty three taxa (284 mosses and 99 hepatics) are reported from the area. Thirty three taxa are first reports to Beira Alta province, and eighteen species are new to the Natural Park. Data on the distribution of bryophyte species are updated, and distributional patterns of bryophytes in the Park are analysed. PNSE is the exclusive area of occurrence for 37 taxa in Portugal, which evidences the importance of the bryophyte flora in this area. Seven phytogeographical elements are recognized, among which the most represented ones are the oceanic, temperate and boreal elements. Potential threats to the bryoflora in this area are discussed. Mosses / Hepatics / Central Range / Iberian Peninsula / Natural Park INTRODUCTION The Serra da Estrela is one of the major granitic mountain ranges in southwestern Europe. It holds the highest peak (1993 m) of Portugal’s mainland and is the meeting point of two climatic regions: Atlantic and Mediterranean.

  • Hernán Cortés, Marqués Del Valle De Oaxaca
Hernán Cortés, marqués del Valle de Oaxaca Cortés also spelled Cortéz Synopsis Born around 1485, Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who defeated the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico for Spain. He first set sail to the New World at the age of 19. Cortés later joined an expedition to Cuba. In 1518, he set off to explore Mexico. There he strategically aligned some native peoples against others to overthrow them. King Charles I appointed him governor of New Spain in 1522. Cortés died in Spain in 1547. Early Life Hernán Cortés, marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, was born around 1485 in Medellín, Spain, and helped advance Spain's position in North America in the 1500s. He came from a lesser noble family in Spain. Some reports indicate that he studied at the University of Salamanca for a time. In 1504, Cortés left Spain to seek his fortune in New World. He traveled to the island of Santo Domingo, or Hispaniola. Settling in the new town of Azúa, Cortés served as a notary for several years. He joined an expedition of Cuba led by Diego Velázquez in 1511. There, Cortés worked in the civil government and served as the mayor of Santiago for a time. Conquered the Aztecs In 1518, Cortés was to command his own expedition to Mexico, but Velázquez canceled it. Cortés ignored the order and set sail for Mexico with more than 500 men and 11 ships that fall. In February 1519, the expedition reached the Mexican coast. Cortés became allies with some of the native peoples he encountered, but with others he used deadly force to conquer Mexico.

  • The French Invasions of Portugal 1807-1811: Rebellion, Reaction and Resistance
The French Invasions of Portugal 1807-1811: rebellion, reaction and resistance Anthony Gray MA by Research University of York Department of History Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies June 2011 Abstract Portugal’s involvement in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars resulted in substantial economic, political and social change revealing interconnections between state and economy that have not been acknowledged fully within the existing literature. On the one hand, economic and political change was precipitated by the flight of Dom João, the removal of the court to Rio de Janeiro, and the appointment of a regency council in Lisbon: events that were the result of much more than the mere confluence of external drivers and internal pressures in Europe, however complex and compelling they may have been at the time. Although governance in Portugal had been handed over to the regency council strict limitations were imposed on its autonomy. Once Lisbon was occupied, and French military government imposed on Portugal, her continued role as entrepôt, linking the South Atlantic economy to that of Europe, could not be guaranteed. Brazil’s ports were therefore opened to foreign vessels and restrictions on agriculture, manufacture and inter-regional trade in the colonies were lifted presaging a transition from neo-mercantilism to proto-industrialised capitalism. The meanings of this dislocation of political power and the shift of government from metropolis to colony were complex, not least in relation to the location and limits of absolutist authority. The immediate results of which were a series of popular insurrections in Portugal, a swift response by the French military government and conservative reaction by Portuguese élites, leading to widespread popular resistance in 1808 and 1809 and, subsequently, Portugal’s wholesale involvement in the Peninsular War with severe and deleterious effects on the Portuguese population and economy.
