    The Portuguese railway network in the second half of the nineteenth century: main actors, debates, and outcomes 1. Introduction The main lines of the Portuguese railway network were built during the second half of the nineteenth century, especially in the period between 1860 and 1890. The first contracts were signed in the 1850s, but their execution was compromised by the lack of experience of its promoters and Portuguese technocrats, whereas in the 1890s investment was hampered by a crippling financial crisis that led to a partial bankruptcy in 1892. By 1900, the grid extended throughout 2,356 km.     Hernán Cortés, marqués del Valle de Oaxaca Cortés also spelled Cortéz Synopsis Born around 1485, Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who defeated the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico for Spain. He first set sail to the New World at the age of 19. Cortés later joined an expedition to Cuba. In 1518, he set off to explore Mexico. There he strategically aligned some native peoples against others to overthrow them. King Charles I appointed him governor of New Spain in 1522. Cortés died in Spain in 1547. Cortés ignored the order and set sail for Mexico with more than 500 men and 11 ships that fall. In February 1519, the expedition reached the Mexican coast. Cortés became allies with some of the native peoples he encountered, but with others he used deadly force to conquer Mexico.

    The French Invasions of Portugal 1807-1811: rebellion, reaction and resistance Anthony Gray MA by Research University of York Department of History Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies June 2011 Abstract Portugal’s involvement in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars resulted in substantial economic, political and social change revealing interconnections between state and economy that have not been acknowledged fully within the existing literature. On the one hand, economic and political change was precipitated by the flight of Dom João, the removal of the court to Rio de Janeiro, and the appointment of a regency council in Lisbon: events that were the result of much more than the mere confluence of external drivers and internal pressures in Europe, however complex and compelling they may have been at the time. Although governance in Portugal had been handed over to the regency council strict limitations were imposed on its autonomy. Once Lisbon was occupied, and French military government imposed on Portugal, her continued role as entrepôt, linking the South Atlantic economy to that of Europe, could not be guaranteed. Brazil’s ports were therefore opened to foreign vessels and restrictions on agriculture, manufacture and inter-regional trade in the colonies were lifted presaging a transition from neo-mercantilism to proto-industrialised capitalism. The meanings of this dislocation of political power and the shift of government from metropolis to colony were complex, not least in relation to the location and limits of absolutist authority. The immediate results of which were a series of popular insurrections in Portugal, a swift response by the French military government and conservative reaction by Portuguese élites, leading to widespread popular resistance in 1808 and 1809 and, subsequently, Portugal’s wholesale involvement in the Peninsular War with severe and deleterious effects on the Portuguese population and economy.

The find of a few caprine remains at least one possible sheep, among a large spectrum of species –swine, rabbit, hare, Iberian lynx and toad–, makes this site the oldest in the region to provide direct evidence for herding practices.

    AUXILIARY SCHEDULE 2 : PLACE (1) This separate schedule is an auxiliary to the enumerated classes 2/9, A/Z. the concepts in it are available only to qualify those classes, and their classmarks are not to be used on their own. (2) In any class of the BC, unless some other arrangement is explicitly provided, these concepts may be used, at the discretion of the classifier, to qualify it, introduced by 8 from Schedule 1 (representing Place); e.g. Education is J, and Education in Ancient Rome is J8 CV; Primary education is JM, and Primary education in developing countries is JM8 BD. (3) In many parts of the BC special instructions are given as to where to apply this schedule; e.g. in Schedule 1 (itself an auxiliary, used to qualify the enumerated classes) 4H is Persons by nationality, and has an instruction to add classmarks from Schedule 2 direct to that classmark; so 4HR B added to a class means Chinese persons in that subject. In Class P Religion, POZ is Christianity in individual countries, with an instruction to add letters A/Z from Schedule 2; so POZ RB is Christianity in China. (4) The schedule is an inverted one, and citation order is therefore usually the opposite of schedule filing order; this means that if more than one concept from the schedule occurs in a subject’s summarisation, the concept appearing later in the schedule is cited before that occurring earlier; e.g. to qualify a subject by the compound place concept Tropical cities and towns, the classmark 8BC AV would be used (built from 8BC Urban areas and 8AV Tropical latitudes).

The coat of arms recalls historic castles and Portugal’s victory over the Moors in 1139. Size and Population: Portugal has 34,340 square miles not including the Azores or the Maderia Islands. There is 458 miles of coastline with most of it on the west coast. The estimated population as of July 2013 is 10,799,270, ranked 80th in the world. Geography and Climate: Portugal is on the westernmost part of the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. It is mostly flat land just above sea level. There are mountain ranges in the northeastern, central and southwestern regions. The Coastal Plains support farming and fishing on the Atlantic Coast. On a huge plateau that extends into Spain, farmers grow crops and raise livestock. Two rivers cross the country from east to west, and the Tagus River in the center empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Lisbon, the capital, and divides the country. Generally mild, in the spring and summer Portugal is warm and dry. Snow covers the highest northern mountain ranges several months each year. Average temperatures range from 70° F in July to 50° F in January. Precipitation ranges from 55 inches in the north to 20 inches in the south. Background and History: The area of Portugal was originally occupied by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago. The area came under control of the Roman Empire around 200 B.C.
