'No joke' Lesson 9 Inspired by: Banksy

BLEK LE RAT
Banksy is probably one of the most well know urban street artists. But if you start reading about street art, Banksy cer- tainly was not the first. Blek le Rat, a street artist from Paris, who goes by the name Xavier Prou, born in 1951, is seen as the "Father of the stencil graffiti."
BANKSY
I have read that Banksy was inspired by Blek le Rat, but then again.... Whatever you read about Banksy, you never really know what is true. We still don't know for sure who he is, which adds to the mystical fun around Banksy.
I think, but that is merely a personal theory, based on my own imagination, that Banksy is not one person, but a couple of guys who crack themselves up every time someone comes with a new theory about his true identity.
It is said that Banksy was born in Bristol (UK) in 1974. But than again, who said that?
First of, I'd like to say that I do not support anyone destroying someone else's property. Vandalism is illegal. Even Banksy himself says he is not an artist, but "nothing but a vandal".
That said, I can't help secretly admiring street art and I do own quite some books about stencil graffiti. Somehow I can really relate to the urge to make a statement with art.
WITTY AND POLITICAL
Banksy is well known for his political statements combined with witty humour. I've called this lesson No Joke, because I am not so good at being humorous in my art, so I figured I'd focus more on the technique of stencil art, rather than being witty.
In this lesson we are going to cut our own stencils. This is pretty time consuming, but very rewarding!

(Make sure that there are no closed area's. All shapes have to connect with the stencil.)
©2016-2017, Marieke Blokland, www.bloknote.nl 8 1. Determine the black parts. Trace and color 2. The second stencil is only the basic outline of the everything that must be black: the shading, the lines face, without any details. and important details.
3. The third stencil is a color layer. Make copies of 4. Cut out all the stencils. everything, so that you don't cut the original sketches. 9 5. Make a quick background with a brayer or brush 6. Stencil the first layer: the outline shape. and acrylic paint. I am using white for this layer.
8. And the last layer is the black layer. 7. The second layer is the colored layer. 10 10. Add more fun details, for example add 9. Voilà! Stencil art! your text stencil as a background.
