Five or six times a day, listeners could win a prize from a sponsor and qualify for that day’s grand prize. Each grand prize was tied to an artist. It might be a flyaway or one of the hot gift items for that year. Once you qualified for that grand prize, you would give us a name of someone you wanted to Play It Forward to and that person had a chance to win the same grand prize. If that person who qualified heard us call their name at 5pm, not only would they win the grand prize but their friend would also win. It had this sense of doing something nice for someone and was fun to figure out how to execute.” Listener and client response was strong enough that WKHT repeated the promotion for five consecutive holiday seasons. Scrooge may assert that the holidays are a ratings washout, so why bother? “If you’re in a diary market, you bother,” Carter says. “You still want to give them a compelling reason to keep listening.” Jackson adds, “You can’t write off an entire month.
