May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary impact of the AAPI community on American culture over the last two hundred years. For so many of us, making music together again is the light at the end of the dark tunnel we have all been through during the pandemic. But let us not forget that music is also what helped us make it through. Last month, just weeks after he was elected to the ASCAP Board, Jon Batiste won an Oscar for the brilliant score to Soul, co-composed by fellow ASCAP member Trent Reznor. In his acceptance speech Jon spoke beautifully about the glorious gift that we music creators possess: “Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine into the instruments...into the minds and hearts and souls of every person who hears it, the stories that happen when you listen to it...the stories you share, the moments you create, the memories you make…man, it’s just so incredibly special.”

Music is a gift. May we never lose sight of the importance of what you do. Thank you for your music.
