ANNIVERS75thARY 1935 - 2010 The Music & the Artists of the Bach Festival Society The Mission of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, Inc. is to enrich the Central Florida community through presentation of exceptionally high-quality performances of the finest classical music in the repertoire, with special emphasis on oratorio and large choral works, world-class visiting artists, and the sacred and secular music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries in the High Baroque and Early Classical periods. This Mission shall be achieved through presentation of: • the Annual Bach Festival, • the Visiting Artists Series, and • the Choral Masterworks Series. In addition, the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, Inc. shall present a variety of educational and community outreach programs to encourage youth participation in music at all levels, to provide access to constituencies with special needs, and to participate with the community in celebrations or memorials at times of significant special occasions. Adopted by a Resolution of the Bach Festival Society Board of Trustees The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, Inc. is a private non-profit foundation as defined under Section 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code and is exempt from federal income taxes under IRC Section 501(c)(3). Gifts and contributions are deductible for federal income tax purposes as provided by law. ANNUAL REPORT FY19 August 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019 Creating a Better World through the Arts Why do we Sing for Hope? We believe in creativity. We believe in healing. We believe in resilience. Dear Friends, WE BELIEVE IN PEOPLE. Over the past twelve months, in a world that has seemed to change almost moment by moment, one thing has remained clear: the creative arts have a unique power to connect us to each other and to our shared humanity. And the effects of this creative connection are nothing short of life-changing for individuals, and for communities local and global. We at Sing for Hope are fortunate every day to witness the amazing strides that are made when creative pathways are cleared, especially for the most vulnerable among us. From classrooms to hospital rooms to transit hubs to refugee camps, we see the spirit-restoring potency of the arts applied to healing, learning, and social cohesion, with inspiring results. Our Sing for Hope programs foster truth-seekers, storytellers, consensus-builders, connectors, illuminators, inspirers, creators. Our programs influence, inspire, and fortify successful students, reinvigorated healthcare patients, and thriving communities. ANNUAL REPORT FY18 August 1, 2017 – July 31, 2018 Creating a Better World through the Arts Sing for Hope students at IS 10 in Queens join the Andrea Bocelli Foundation’s Voices of Haiti Choir for a cultural exchange and shared performance, led by MISSION ABF President Laura Biancalani and SFH Co-Founder Monica Yunus. Sing for Hope harnesses the power of the arts to create a better world. ii 1 OUR PROGRAMS AND IMPACT Dear Friends, It is our sincere pleasure to share with you our FY2018 Annual Report, an overview of the creativity inspired, communities renewed, and lives transformed because of your support. Thanks to your generosity, over the past year Sing for Hope has been able to grow our programs’ scope and impact, exponentially increasing arts accessibility for our most vulnerable fellow citizens. Since 2006, Sing for Hope has worked to harness the power of the arts to create a better world. Over these past twelve years, we’ve witnessed countless instances of our creative programs sparking well-being, building community, and fostering empathy. In this past year, we placed our 450th Sing for Hope Piano in NYC to date, reaching over 2 million New Yorkers THE SING FOR HOPE EDUCATION and visitors to our city. We continued to bring dynamic creative arts programming to 80,000+ PIANOS Dynamic arts programming in students and community members in 180 NYC schools and to 16,000+ patients and caregivers 50 Sing for Hope Pianos in NYC’s under-resourced public schools benefiting in 25 healthcare facilities across the five boroughs. -

Song Exploder Jon Batiste - We Are Episode 205 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“We Are” by JON BATISTE) Hrishikesh: Jon Batiste is a pianist, songwriter, and composer from New Orleans. He’s been nominated for multiple Grammys, and just won the Golden Globe and got an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack to the Pixar film Soul, which he composed along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Jon is also a recipient of the American Jazz Museum’s lifetime achievement award, and on weeknights, you can see him as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In March 2021, he put out his new album, We Are. But the title track from it actually came out much earlier last year in June 2020. Jon: We put the song out during the Black Lives Matter protest before it was even finished being mixed and mastered. Hrishikesh: In this episode, Jon talks about how he drew from his roots, both at a personal level and at a cultural level, and wove all of it into the song. Jon: I’m Jon Batiste. (Music fades out) Jon: So I started working on this song in September of 2019 with Kizzo, a great producer from the Netherlands, and Autumn Rowe. We met up in New York City. And this is pre-COVID, my life is busy - I'm doing the Late Show, I'm writing the score for Soul. -

Thirteen Years of Joye in Aiken In this year of change, when it has sometimes seemed as if nothing might ever be normal again, one thing that has not changed is the importance of the arts in our lives. Especially where sources of hope and inspiration are few, the arts retain their power to energize and refresh us. And so it is with even greater pleasure than usual that we welcome you (digitally, to be sure) to the 13th Annual Joye in Aiken Festival and Outreach Program. Though COVID-19 has forced us to rethink timeframes, formats and venues in the interest of ensuring the safety of our community and our artists, we have embraced those challenges as opportunities. If a single Festival week presented dangers, could we spread the events out to allow for responses to changing conditions? If it wasn’t possible to hold an event indoors, could we hold it outdoors? With those questions and a thousand others answered, we are proud to present to you a Festival that is necessarily different in many respects, but that is no less exciting. And because it’s so central to our mission, we’re especially proud to introduce to you an important new dimension of our Outreach Program. With COVID making it impossible for us to present our usual Kidz Bop and Young People’s Concerts, we turned to our nationally-known artists for help. And their solution was perfect: two engaging series of instructional videos designed specifically for the children of Aiken County by these world-class musicians. -

Jon Batiste and Stay Human Band Wow Schreiber Students By Lee Anne Vetrone-Timothy, co-Chair Schreiber Cultural Arts Committee; Photos by Linda Nutter It was a great way to warm the heart and soften school re-entry from the December holiday…just 3 days back from break, a capacity crowd of 9th- 12th grade students were treated to wonderful sounds from New Orleans born, Julliard-trained Jazz rising star, Jon Batiste and the Stay Human band. Hailing from a renowned line of New Orleans jazz musicians, Jon Batiste came to New York at the age of 17 and began forging his own path. Now, 26, he is the Artistic Director At Large of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and has received a Masters Degree from the Juilliard School for piano. The media has likened Jon to a young Ray Charles on 'Social Music' as he reinterprets America's richest musical traditions through a contemporary lens. The group kicked off their 2014 tour with a concert at Landmark on Main Street. Thanks to a grant from the Port Washington Education Foundation, production assistance and additional funding from Landmark on Main Street and event production and additional funding from the Schreiber HSA, the band first stopped off at Schreiber to play two concerts (8th grade and 9th- 12th grades) and conducted a master class for Schreiber Jazz Ensemble students. The band, comprised of 6 musicians, most of them met at the Julliard School, wowed students and staff with classical Jazz numbers and introduced some of their own songs. Instruments included the grand and upright pianos, a bass, a tuba (which arrived in one of the musician’s backpacks!) and Sousa Phone, Saxophone and 2 Percussionists. -

He has a masters degree from Julliard, a week nightly gig as musical director on The Late Show with Steven Colbert, the music director for The Atlantic and Co-Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. His demanding performance schedule has taken him to 40 countries, and often includes his signature ‘love riot’ street parades. He’s also one of the musical minds behind the music of Pixar’s new animated film Soul. He named his band “Stay Human” and believes in the power of interpersonal connection, saying that music has the power to elevate the spirit. Although he records and appears in the media, he places an outsized importance on live performance, frequently bringing his band into the street for New Orleans style parades. His band once recorded an entire album in the New York City subway. Prepare Have students listen to some of Batiste’s music created for the Pixar film Soul.
