Anthem Glory to God Sung by the choir. Raymond Reeder Glory to God in the highest, Peace on earth and good will to men, Glory to God, Glory to God. Glory to God, to God, to God. Glory to God in the highest, Glory to the King, yes! Glory to the King! Glory to God, Glory to God. Glory to God in the highest. Opening Prayer Holy and merciful God, like the shepherds of old, we listen for news of great joy, in the words of the herald angels. You are coming into the world at last. Open our hearts and our souls, O God, that we may welcome your Son into our lives with joy. Amen.

The First Lesson • Isaiah 9:2, 6‐7 The righteous reign of the coming King The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it

2 with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Christ is coming. Be glad and believe.

Anthem Born This Day Sung by the choir. Louis Brown III (b. 1959), Sean Dancy (b. 1975), and Scott Parker (b. 1965) Christmas is the day The angels came to say, They said be not afraid. For born on this day, Born to save is Christ the Lord. Shepherds watched by night When that angel appeared from on high And said, “Be not afraid, For born on this day, Born to save is Christ the Lord.” Wise men from afar Said they followed the eastern star, Followed it to this place. For born on this day, Born to save is Christ the Lord. Refrain Born this day, Christmas Day, Born to save the world is Christ the Lord. Born this day, Christmas Day, Born to save the world is Christ the Lord. They said be not afraid. For born on this day, Born to save is Christ the Lord. He’s God the Father, God the Son, and Holy Spirit. Christmas is the day The angels came to say, They said be not afraid For born on this day, Born to save is Christ the Lord. Refrain

3 The Second Lesson • Luke 1:26-35, 38 The In the sixth month the angel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. Christ is coming. Be glad and believe.

Anthem Who Would Imagine a King Sung by the choir. Hallerin Hilton Hill (b. 1964) and Mervyn Warren (b. 1964) Mommies and daddies always believe That their little angels are special indeed, And of all of the wonderful gifts he could bring, Who would imagine a king? A shepherd or teacher is what you could be, Or maybe a fisherman out on the sea, Or maybe a carpenter building things, But who would imagine a king? It was so clear when the wise men arrived, And the angels were singing your praise That the world would be different ’cause you were alive; That’s what heaven stood still to proclaim. One day an angel said quietly That soon he would bring something special to me, And of all the wonderful gifts he could bring, Who would imagine a king?

4 The Third Lesson • Luke 2:8-16 The shepherds and the angels glorify God In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. Christ has come. Rejoice and be glad.

Anthem O Holy Night Sung by the choir. (1803–1856) arr. Daryl L. A. Hunt (b. 1970) and R. Reeder O holy night! The stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared, and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night divine. Holy, O holy night. Holy, O holy night, O holy night. I hear the angels crying, Holy, holy. I hear the angels crying out, Holy, holy, holy, holy. Don’t you hear the angels singing, Holy, holy? Don’t you hear the angels singing, Holy, holy, holy, holy? Can’t you hear the angels singing, Holy, holy? Can’t you hear the angels singing, Holy, holy? (, 1808–1877; English translation John Sullivan Dwight, 1813–1893, alt.; additional text R. Reeder)

The Fourth Lesson • John 1:1-5, 14 The Mystery of the Incarnation In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. Christ has come. Rejoice and be glad.

5 Anthem Celebrate the King Sung by the choir. Ricky Dillard (b. 1965) Let’s celebrate our King! He’s the ruler of everything! Let’s lift his Name on high! Come on, Zion, we praise our King! He’s worthy of our praise, Lord God, an Ancient of Days. Let’s lift his Name on high! Come on, Zion, we praise our King! He’s awesome and glorious, excellent King. He’s worthy of all of our praise, Righteous, victorious, so let’s lift him up. Come on, Zion, we praise our King! Righteous and glorious, Ever victorious, He’s reigning over us. He’s a great God!

A Litany of the Light of Christ The glory of the Lord has been revealed and all flesh shall see it together. Jesus Christ is the light of the world: a light no darkness can quench. The shepherds kept watch by night, and your glory shone round about them. The darkness is not dark to you, the night is as bright as the day. Let your light scatter the darkness, and fill your Church with your glory. Christ, the Light of the World, gives each of us one light, so that we too may shine with gratitude, hope, and love. Receive the light of Christ, hold the light, and be thankful. Amen.

6 Anthem Shine Your Light Sung by the choir. Tore W. Aas (b. 1957) and Martin Alfsen (b. 1959) Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light on me, Jesus. Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light on me, Jesus. You are the morning star, my precious one. Almighty God you are, great things you’ve done. For all eternity, I’ll give you praise. You won the victory, I’ll bless your Name. Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light in me, Jesus. Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light in me, Jesus. You are the great I am, the King of kings. Great rock of ages, my urge to sing. Through all eternity, I will proclaim. You won the victory, I’ll bless your Name. Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light through me, Jesus. Shine your light, shine your light, Shine your light through me, Jesus.

The Sending • The Work of Christmas Howard Thurman (1899–1981)

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and the princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart.

The Closing Prayer Come among us, Light of the World, heal our brokenness and bring us to wholeness, ease our pain, and bring us hope, strength, and life. Give us new heart, new hope, and a new song, that our prayers and deeds may be one. We ask this in your Holy name. Amen.

7 The Blessing The dean offers the blessing, and the people respond, Amen.

The Dismissal Go in peace. Proclaim the Word made flesh. Glory, thanks, and praise to God.
