Adrian Schrinner Lord Mayor of Brisbane 5 Children’s Hospital Foundation WORKING WONDERS FOR SICK KIDS GRACE’S STORY Little Grace is a fighter and has been in and out of Queensland Children’s Hospital for two years following a leukaemia diagnosis in 2018. A few weeks after Grace commenced treatment, she got an infection. She was admitted to hospital for several weeks and ended up in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, ventilated and in kidney failure. She also had a bleed in her intestine and had to be rushed to theatre to repair it. The chemotherapy gave her severe neuropathy (when nerve damage leads to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling) and she stopped walking. Thankfully, with weekly physiotherapy and hard work, she was able to start walking again. Sadly, just a few months later she broke her leg, and because Grace had developed brittle bones from the treatment, it took many months to heal. Grace had to learn to walk for a second time. Grace’s mum, Philippa told us, “The Children’s Hospital Foundation volunteers have been absolutely amazing. When we have had long stays in hospital, they make it easier with the services they provide and their friendly smiles. Grace is often confined to her room during an admission, so the volunteers deliver toys and books for her to play with, which is absolutely amazing. They also gave Grace a beautiful quilt to make her room feel more like home, which was wonderful! They made an overwhelming experience just a little easier.” “When in hospital, one of Grace’s favourite things was pet therapy. She loves dogs! Whenever she received a visit from one of them, she was always up and ready to give them a pat. Her other favourite activity was music therapy. The relaxing music provided to Grace when she was in PICU was amazing,” Philippa said. It is hoped that brave little Grace will finally finish treatment in November this year and get to spend a magical Christmas at home with her family. Philippa said “We are so proud of Grace. On top of everything that comes with a leukaemia diagnosis, Grace also had to learn to walk again, not once but twice. We are planning a big celebration at the end of her treatment. We can’t wait.” 6 www.childrens.org.au SUPPORTING PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES Everything we do for sick and injured kids is made possible by the generosity and support of our supporters, partners and the community. It is only with your support that we can continue to fund pioneering research that can achieve faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses and injuries. Despite the unprecedented year we have all experienced, our mission remained the same; to work wonders for sick kids and their families; provide a welcome distraction with fun, games and craft, and bring a smile to the face of a sick child. Christmas is a special day, and your donations help us do everything we can to make it a wonderful time for sick kids and their families who sadly find themselves in hospital at this time of year. Help more kids like Grace celebrate Christmas by donating today. Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a difference and with your generous support, we can continue to work wonders and save young lives. Annual Report 2018–19 3 Introduction 5 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 6 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 20 Our Patrons On the cover: Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes a bow after his first official performance as Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director PHOTO: JONATHAN TICHLER / MET OPERA 2 Introduction The 2018–19 season was a historic one for the Metropolitan Opera. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

  • PROGRAM NOTES Quincy Symphony Orchestra & Choruses - December 1, 2018 Dr
PROGRAM NOTES Quincy Symphony Orchestra & Choruses - December 1, 2018 Dr. Paul Borg The December holiday season is filled with stories and the music that goes along with them. Sacred and secular stories reflect both serious and fun expectations that families have while anticipating the arrival of Hanukkah, Christmas, and the New Year. Familiar religious stories of the season are Hanukkah, the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem and the lighting of the Menorah, as well as the Nativity of Jesus in Bethlehem. Other stories have developed over centuries, including the Christmas Eve journey of Santa Claus. HARK! arranged by William Camphouse In the arranger's words: “HARK! is joyful statement of celebration - in all respects it’s musically extroverted. Visions of angelic hosts, sturdy four bar phrases and similar harmonic rhythm patterns are common characteristics that link Felix Mendelssohn’s Hark, the Herald Angels Sing and Angels from the Realms of Glory from the British hymn tune Regent Square. Opening with a recurring fanfare motive, both tunes are stated independently, then developed and interwoven making the most of orchestral color and ensemble energy.” Ding, Dong, Merrily / Good King Wenceslas arranged by John Mindeman In the arranger's words: "Ding Dong Merrily / Good King Wenceslas is a lively blend of two traditional Christmas carols, though not always treated in traditional ways musically. “Ding Dong” is a straightforward, rhythmic, happy announcement of the joy of the season, with lots of interplay between the different sections of the orchestra. Good King Wenceslas, by contrast, is a quiet, reflective look at the compassion of King Wenceslas shown to the poor man in the story.
