W.I. The next monthly meeting on 8th July at 2 pm in Sourton Hall will be a 'crochet' afternoon.

Music in the Church We were treated to an enjoyable afternoon of Baroque music in Sourton church at the end of May, kindly organized by the Pratt family. Hugh meets regularly to play the ‘cello with his friends and they came to delight us with a standard of music we rarely hear. The quartet consisted of Christine Fraser on her spinet, Chris Knox and Jacquie Kenny on flutes and Hugh on the cello playing Quantz, Graun and Telemann. Tim Pratt treated us to a wonderful performance of Bach 1st Suite for solo ‘cello. He is a professional ‘cellist who performed in Symphony Orchestras in Mexico while he was living there. We are grateful to the ladies of the church who kindly provided the refreshments. It was a very happy, relaxed atmosphere as people popped in and out of the church. The sound of the music brought visitors in from the cycle track to listen and munch some cake. £92 was raised for church funds thanks mainly to the generosity of Jenny and Hugh Pratt and their friends.

Healing Service You are warmly invited to a Healing Service at Sourton Parish Church on Thursday 17th July at 6.30 pm. The service will include hymns, readings and a short address; prayer will also be offered to anyone who would like healing from whatever condition they suffer. For further details contact Rev. BaSE Page 8 News from the Castle Hello everyone Thank you so much to everyone who came along to our Spring Fling event. It was a great evening with over 200 people attending and our brilliant Youth Panel raised over £150 towards the building project. The biggest thank you has to go to the local musicians and performers who gave up their time for free to make the evening really special. Building work is coming along well. The south wing pointing is now completely raked out, stone cleaning on the parapets is nearly complete and we have even started to put in the waterproof membrane. The scaffolding on the south wing is due to come down before the start of our 2015 season so we are busy planning a day by day diary of work over the winter when we will be moving the entire Castle Drogo collection. It never feels right to think about winter in June but we will need a plan to do this mammoth task. Other good news is that fundraising is coming along well. The team at Drogo have raised over £5,500 through cake bakes, a quiz night, outreach talks and on-site donations. We are really keen to hear any other fundraising ideas and we would love it if you felt inspired to do some fundraising on our behalf. Please get in touch if you have any thoughts. And finally, the team from Learn Devon have a programme of really interesting workshops taking place at Drogo this year. There is a different workshop every month. July's workshop is stained glass, costs £25 per person including all materials and a cuppa and biscuit. If you would like to book, please contact Learn Devon on 01822 613701.

Best wishes, Paula Community Engagement Officer, Castle Drogo 01647 434130, [email protected]

BaSE Page 11 What's On at Okehampton Library - July 2014

We have lots of events in July starting on 12th July with the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge. This year's challenge is called Mythical Maze and the aim is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays. It's great fun for kids, it keeps them reading through the summer preventing their reading ability from dipping. Just head to Okehampton Library from the 12th July to enrol your children and receive a membership pack for every child, it's all free. It is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities, they can read any library books that they like and everybody who reads six books or more will receive a certificate and a medal and there are stickers and other small prizes to collect along the way. To launch the challenge staff from Okehampton Library will be at the Connect Community Morning at the Charter Hall/Red Lion Yard on 12th July 10:00-13:00 where Rob Pudner from 'Entertainingly Different' will be performing a storytime session from 11:00.

The first 75 children to complete the challenge will be invited to a session in September to see cockroaches, scorpions, spiders and more with Jo from 'Reptobug'. On Wednesday 16th July 2pm, award winning novelist Veronica Henry will be at Okehampton Library for a chat, cream tea and book signing. Veronica Henry began her career as a secretary on •The Archers‘ before turning her hand to scriptwriting. She has written for some of our best loved television dramas, including Heartbeat and Holby City. She writes escapist fiction with an edge - her latest book ‘The Beach Hut Next Door' is set in a row of beach huts on the North Devon coast: assignations, confessions and shocking revelations abound amongst the sandcastles and ice-cream. Her novel 'A Night on the Orient Express' won the Romantic Novel of the Year 2014. Tickets are available in advance from the library £2.50 each to include a cream tea. We have family fun on Saturday 26th July from 10:00-13:00 with a ‘Unicorns & Minotaurs' family craft workshop run by Learn Devon, bookings in advance. On the same morning enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee served by our Friends of Okehampton Library Group who will also have tickets available during July and August for their Summer Fun draw - various prizes up for grabs at just 50p a ticket. Also don't forget there is still time to give your views on a series of proposed changes to the way the library service operates in Devon in the Library Consultation. We have developed seven proposals for the future of Devon Libraries and we are consulting on these proposals until the 17th July 2014. We are keen to hear the views and ideas of a wide range of people and to learn about the potential impact - positive and negative - that these proposals may have on you, your family and friends and your local community. We are also keen to hear about any ideas or potential approaches which we have not considered, or hear from organisations which may be willing to work with us in the future. We will use this feedback to create a definitive set of proposals to take to 's Cabinet during Autumn 2014. Full details of the Consultation and proposals together with questionnaires are available from your local library or at http://www.toughchoices.co.uk/.

Membership: Membership of the Garden club is £10.00 per person per year. We very much welcome new members.

We had a lovely evening at Bridge Mill in on 19thJuly. It was gloriously warm and sunny and Rosie and Alan Beat were most welcoming. We were shown around Alan's "no dig" vegetable garden with its enviable produce and the automatic slug removers in the form of a flock of call ducks. We then moved on to admire Rosie's cottage garden borders borders full of interesting plants, many of which she uses for dying wool from their flock of sheep. Most of the group then walked through the meadows and woodland to the Mill Pond and the Lake. A wonderfully buccolic sight with sheep and cows grazing in the sunshine, and damsel flies sitting in the reeds and rushes around the edges of the water. Rosie and Alan explained that the creation of the lake and mill pond has resulted in an increase in wildlife including regular vists from otters and herons and as well as attracting dragonflies and damselflies which breed in the shallows of the water. Our walk ended in the woodland garden Rosie has recently created behind the mill, a lovely peaceful spot with interesting planting under the trees showing what could be done in shady areas. Alan has returned the Water Mill to working order and he started the water wheel turning for us. We had a fascinating tour of the mill building with Alan demonstrating how the flour milling machinery works and demonstrating the water powered sack hoist. Alan and Rosie run the property as an organic smallholding and welcome visitors at various events throughout the year. They have a website www.thebridgemill.org.uk with details of forthcoming events. The Mill and its gardens are well worth visiting.

We are hoping there will be a class for everyone! Bridestowe Garden Club Wishes to thank Our Judges and Sponsors For their support

Thank You. WW 1 commemoration Plans are under way for both churches to be used by the village on Monday August 4th. The parish church will be open all day for quiet reflection with candles to light and a display of WW1 memorabilia. The Methodist Church will be open from 11am to 8pm on Monday, 6pm to 9 pm on Tuesday and 10 to 12noon on Wednesday. The events will start with a short service of prayers at the War memorial at 11am on Monday 4th led by Rev Graham Warmington. There will be a display of posters about those men who died in WW1 around the memorial. The Methodist Church will hold a display of the reports which Howard Barkell has written on every man whose name is on the stone memorial. Coffee will be served in the Methodist Church with a chance to chat and reminisce. The memorial stone at the chapel will be decorated with flowers and visitors will be able to add their own flower as a personal tribute. There will be a computer and printer for visitors to research their families‘ WW1 history and the projector will be used for DVDs of WW1 films to be shown. If you have any memorabilia that you would like to have displayed please contact Brian Maddaford (861402) Likewise if you would be prepared to steward the displays, or make coffee, on any of the days contact Brian who will sort out a rota.

BaSE Page 17 Ram Roast 2014. The organisers of this year's Ram Roast have been a little quiet but rest assured, it's coming Bridestowe together nicely. There will be the usual ingredients for a Ram Roast successful Ram Roast- live music, plenty of stalls, 2014 children's entertainment, a good variety of food on offer and a beer tent! Everyone should enjoy the Punch and Judy show which will be one of the highlights. You will see raffle tickets on sale in the White Hart and Riverside Stores during July - there's a £100 cash prize for starters! We are appealing for donations for the tombola, the bric-a-brac stall and for additional raffle prizes. If these could be brought to the field on the morning that would be great. We could do with some extra hands - there's an informal meeting on Wednesday 2nd July at 7.30pm in the White Hart so please come along if you can help in some way. Please remember that dogs are not allowed on the Sporting Green - we do not want anyone to be disappointed. We are hoping to have BaSE out early for next month and it will have a full rundown of what's happening on the day. BaSE Page 18 NEWS FROM ROSEANNE & JANE AT

THE WHITE HART INN Well, that is our first year milestone reached in the pub already, time really has flown by. What a super night we had on our anniversary - great live music and great company! Thank you to everyone who has wished us well.

We are enjoying long days of sunshine at the moment - perfect for a long cold drink to finish the day. We now have a light session ale in from Brewery, ‘Tawny', which compliments our other Cotleigh ale -Buzzard: much darker and richer. Also we are trying out a new ale from The Hardhead Brewing Company, a relatively new brewery down in Cornwall. It is a 3.6% abv ‘Summer Ale' and worth a try.

Our darts tournament has been held over from last month and now will be on Friday 11th July. Open to anyone living in the Bridestowe and district area - come on in and sign up - someone will be having their name engraved on the trophy, it might be you!

Another date you must surely put in your diary is Sat 12th July, when Glen Johnson returns with his own inimitable style of entertainment. He is such a talented and genuinely ‘nice' individual! By the time the end of the month arrives the schools will have broken up for their holidays and Summer will be well and truly here. What better way to start the holidays than to buy in some wine, body and skin essentials to keep safe in the sun and a few more accessories - we are holding a fun evening on Saturday 19th July where you can taste some wine (for free!) and buy all of those things. And not forgetting the children - treat them to a free meal, for all their hard work at school, when you have a meal yourself on Friday or Saturday, 25th or 26th July, lunch or evening. It will be lovely having lots more children in the pub once the holidays have arrived.

Our forthcoming dates for July are as follows: Saturday 5th Wimbledon Women's Final on T.V. in Buzzard bar. Sunday 6th Wimbledon Men's Final on T.V. in Buzzard bar. (Come and enjoy some strawberry cream teas!). Wednesday 9th FIFA World cup semi-final on T.V. in Buzzard bar. (Please note the Quiz has been postponed until next Wednesday). Friday 11th Bridestowe & District DARTS TOURNAMENT. Please see sign-up sheet in the Buzzard bar. Saturday 12th 8.30pm Live music with a twist - BACK AFTER POPULAR DEMAND ~ GLEN JOHNSON Country, Rock n Roll, Spike Milligan, The Goons, Yodelling. An Absolutely brilliant all round entertainer!! Wednesday 16th 8.00pm QUIZ NIGHT in aid of C.H.I.C.K.S. Saturday 19th ‘GET READY TO SIZZLE THIS SUMMER' evening, from 7.30pm onwards. Wine tasting (a free taster then only £2.50 per glass), with wine to buy or order on the evening, by the bottle or case! ALSO BODY SHOP for all your summer body essentials (lots of bargains on the night) and IN HOUSE for your summer accessories and jewellery to complete your outfit. BaSE Page 19 Friday 25th & Saturday 26th Celebrate the start of the children's school Summer holidays with our Summer Special Meal Deal. Children eat their main course free, with each accompanying adult also eating. (One free kids main for each paying adult main). Lunch &/or evening.

Sunday 27th 8.30pm OPEN MIC, a lovely relaxed way to spend a Sunday evening, listening to some great musicians.

BaSE Page 20 BaSE Page 21 BRIDESTOWE CRICKET CLUB.

Our cricketers have hit a rich vein of form and as I write this (24th June) sit at the top of Division E of the Devon League, 9 points clear of their nearest rivals.

Since the last copy of BaSE appeared they have defeated (away), (home) and Kilmington (away), losing only to (away). Most games have been close and exciting and nails were certainly being bitten by their supporters as a seemingly likely defeat by Whimple at Millaton was turned into victory with a few balls to spare.

The side have an excellent mix of wise old heads and ebullient young players which is working well under Mark Butler's captaincy. (Full details are on the Club's website.)

In the midst of these successes the club also won the Tavistock 10/10 knock out competition beating the hosts in the final. Many congratulations to all involved. The players will be pleased that they are at home more often in the second half of the season as travelling long distances to away games is tiring as well as expensive.

June/July fixtures:-

28th June Countess Wear Home 5th July Topsham St. James Away 12th July Kenn Home 19th July Home 26th July Away (A full list of fixtures is on the website)

Spectators are very welcome on the ground and a good tea is always available for supporters. Junior coaching is proving popular and is well supported although a few more older children would be very welcome.

A DATE FOR THE DIARY:- FRIDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER Hot supper and quiz - in aid of the Club and SEND-A-COW. Full details in next month's BaSE

The Over 60’Luncheon Club will be on Tuesday 8th July Meet at 12 noon for lunch at 12.30pm. Please ring either Jenny Reynolds 861678 or Ruth Maddaford 861402 if you cannot come.

Reports On the first Sunday of June we said goodbye to David and June Muir and enjoyed one of his Family Services at St. Bridget‘s followed by a very successful lunch held in the Methodist Church. Our very grateful thanks to all who participated in helping before and after the lunch and in providing the excellent food and to our Methodist friends for providing the venue. David and June Muir would like to thank you all for your kindness in the farewell you gave us. It has been a real pleasure to serve you over the last 14 months, and we have made some genuine friendships that will last long after we have gone. Thank you too for your generosity in the cash gifts you gave us, which we assure you will be well spent on our travels! The spiritual life of the people of Bridestowe will continue in our thoughts and prayers. David

Advance notices Tuesday 2nd September the new Methodist Minister Rev Iris Bray will have a Welcome service at Fairplace, Okehampton at 7.30pm. The service will be conducted by The Bishop of , The Rt. Rev‘d Nicholas McKinnel in St Bridget‘s Church, Bridestowe and be followed by a supper at The Methodist Church. You are all warmly invited. Jennifer Thorne ------Bridestowe Church Partnership WALK & TALK For our first "sociable guided walk” on June 17th. fifteen of us (and three dogs) set off along the Granite way on a short walk which took in a loop round the top of Fernworthy Down. There was much chatter and laughter and those of us who wished it ended up with a refreshing drink in the White Hart after a walk lasting about 55 BaSE Page 23 minutes. Not everybody walked for this long which was absolutely fine and as intended. They simply went back to the cars when they had had enough and waited for the rest of us. On the 24th, eleven of us (and one dog) departed from the Fox & Hounds on a longer and rather stiffer walk for the more energetic and fit. We walked up the Lyd Valley, round Great Nodden and finished up inside the pub, after about 1 1/2 hours, for another well earned beverage! Both these walks were much enjoyed by all and we think we will do it again, having learned a few lessons about what people would like and can do. The next gentle, short walk will take place on Tuesday, July 15th. and the longer, harder one for the more energetic folk on Tuesday July 22nd. For both walks we meet outside the Methodist Church at 10.30 a.m. - we can park in the White Hart car park by kind permission. If you couldn't make it this month, but would like to join us next time, we hope you will and look forward to seeing you. If you have any queries, ring me on 01837 861678. Jenny Reynolds
