My basic claim is that the distinctive grammatical features that this dialect of Arabic displays are the results of a wide range, long-term and intense contact with Persian. To achieve this aim and in order to interpret the nature of the contact phenomena two methods of data collection namely the questionnaire and the interview were used. The selection of the constructions to be tested in the questionnaire was based on indications of contact influencing particular constructions in Kh. Arabic, which were identified in a pilot investigation by the author. To support the data collected via the questionnaire and to allow every Kh. Arabic speaker – literate and illiterate – to have the chance to participate in the study for more genuine and reliable results, the interview method was also used. Results of the analysis of the collected data supported my claim and revealed that the tested constructions were indeed contact phenomena – cases of convergence - due to Persian influence. Analysis of the contact-induced changes revealed cases of direct borrowing (MAT) of grammatical morphemes

As it has been the case for years on long weekends and holidays, endless queues of cars from Oman are waiting to cross the border in order to flock to Dubai for Isra’ and Miraj break 1 and enjoy attractions and entertainment that their country does not seem to offer. Major traffic congestions are taking place in the Omani city of al-Buraymi separated from the contiguous United Arab Emirates city of al-Ayn by the international border. Crawford Date approved: May 31, 2013 ii Abstract Recent studies applying multidisciplinary approaches suggest that the Anatomically Modern Homo sapiens (AMHS) passed through the Arabian Peninsula in their major diaspora out of Africa. The Arabian Peninsula is connected to three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. In addition to the major diaspora, the Arabian Peninsula has witnessed numerous migrations among the three continents. The populations of the Arabian Peninsula have been investigated to better understand their evolutionary history. This dissertation investigated the paternal genetic structure of the Kuwaiti and Failaka Island populations using 15 loci Y-STR data. In addition, the maternal genetic structure of Failaka Island has been investigated using mtDNA HVS-I sequence data. This is the first genetic study to characterize Failaka Island population. The result showed that the Kuwaiti population has a high frequency of Y- haplogroup J1 (37%) similar to other Arabian populations.

    UNSETTLING STATE: NON-CITIZENS, STATE POWER AND CITIZENSHIP IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES by Noora Anwar Lori A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science Baltimore, Maryland October, 2013 ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines the development and enforcement of citizenship and immigration policies in the United Arab Emirates in order to revisit an enduring puzzle in comparative politics: why are resource-rich states resiliently authoritarian? The dominant explanation for the ‘oil curse’ assumes that authoritarianism emerges because regimes ‘purchase’ the political acquiescence of their citizens by redistributing rents. However, prior to the redistribution of rents comes the much more fundamental question of who will be included in the group of beneficiaries. I argue that oil facilitates the creation of authoritarian power structures because when political elites gain control over fixed assets, they can more effectively erect high barriers to political incorporation. By combining stringent citizenship policies with temporary worker programs, political elites develop their resources while concentrating the redistribution of assets to a very small percentage of the total population. In the UAE, this policy combination has been so effective that non-citizens now comprise 96 percent of the domestic labor force. The boundaries of the UAE’s citizenry became increasingly stringent as oil production was converted into revenue in the 1960s. Since oil reserves are unevenly distributed across the emirates, the political elites who signed concessions with successful oil prospectors have since monopolized control over the composition of the citizenry. As a result, domestic minorities who were previously incorporated by smaller emirates who did not discover oil have since been excluded from the citizenry.

    Abstract The thesis examines the process of state formation of the only surviving federal state in the Arab world: the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It tries to answer questions related to the historical circumstances leading to the federation; the respective role of the British officials and the local rulers in it; and the methods and strategies employed by the rulers of these Emirates during the negotiations leading to the formation of the federation to preserve their local status and power while bridging the gaps between them and establishing a viable state. It argues that, of the main sets of political players at the time (the British officials and the local rulers), it was the interaction among the rulers that led to the successful outcome of announcing the new state. Even during the successive negotiations to establish unions, the rulers of the Emirates did not differ over the forming of a larger state; however they did disagree on their influence over decision-making institutions within the new state. Therefore, it was the recognition by the rulers of each other‟s power and the value of their potential contribution to the future union that determined the issue of the negotiations and the inclusion or exclusion of a particular ruler from the union. The ambition of this research is to contribute to the literature on federal state formation in the post-colonial world, with a particular emphasis on the process, the forces, and the avenues leading to the merging of various components into one political entity. It relies on newly-released British official documents and the increasing availability of personal accounts (books, articles and memoirs) by individuals who participated in the negotiations, giving new tools to investigate various aspects of the social, economic and political factors associated with the formation of the state on the Coast of Oman.

Ismail DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 2008 United Nations in the course of its 50 yea^s history, passing through different crises, has taken a form very different from the one mapped out for it at its inception. Today, in terms of its framework, character and performance, the United Nations is an altogether different organization. The fundamental change that has occurred is that, today, the UN is no longer subservient to, or aligned with any particular power or group of powers. Some may talk of 'tyranny of majority' or 'hegemony of super powers' For Iraq has been forging a stable functioning democracy since its establishment in 1920. The legacies that US forces has left the country will make building a sustainable democracy extremely difficult. With ruthless efficiency the US co-opted or broke civil society through violence and patronage, forcing people to interact with the institutions of the state on an individual basis. The UN role in the Iraq-Kuwait conflict and its effort to rehabilitate Iraq on the path of democracy bears ample testimony to the growing effectiveness of the world organization in managing regional conflicts. Currently the Gulf region is passing through a critical phase of crises and tensions as never before. Clearly, the 1990-91 Kuwait crises did not arise from a vacuum.
