JONES 169 INDEX. , 187 PREFACE In answer to various requests and inquiries, it has been decided to publish in book form the continued series of contributions relating to Hispanic American Bibliographies which appeared in THE HISPANIC AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW (see the issues for August and Novem- ber, 1920, and all four issues of 1921, namely, nos. 3 and 4 of vol. III., and all of vol. IV.). In preparing the material for its present book form, some few minor corrections and revisions have been necessary, but the list is practically as published in the abovenamed REVIEW. It is the compiler's intention to publish from time to time in the HISPANIC AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW supplementary lists of bio- bibliographical contributions to include current publications and also those that may not have been recorded in the present list. However, in this note to the special reprint edition it seems desirable to note the more important titles that have accumulated since the last part of the list was sent to the printer. By a regrettable oversight, Dr. Charles Carroll Marden's Notes for a bibliography of American Spanish (Studies in honor of A. Marshall Elliott, Baltimore, Johns Hopkins press, 1911, p. 267-292) was omitted. " This work, while modestly denominated Notes" by the scholarly author, is in reality a comprehensive repertory of the literature of the subject prepared by one who is himself a specialist in the field. Dr. Harden is preparing a second edition in which he will incorporate the numerous contributions to the literature of the subject which have appeared since 1911. Of the series of Hispanic American biographical repertories prepared by William Belmont Parker under the auspices of the Hispanic Society of America, the following are to be noted in addition to the two included in the list: Bolivians of to-day, New York, 1920 (xiv, 319 p.); Chileans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xix, 633 p.); Paraguayans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xv, 315 p.); Peruvians of to-day, Lima, 1919 (xix, 616 p.). May 1, 1922 INTRODUCTORY NOTE In the present tentative list are included (1) bibliographies, (2) col- lective biographies, (3) histories of literature, and (4) some general and miscellaneous works found of frequent use for reference purposes, encyclopedias, anuarios, almanaques, and others of similar character. They are, in large part, works which the compiler has found of use in bibliographical and historical research relating to Hispanic America. Some titles are included, however, of works he has not been able to see, and a few are cited because of their rarity or historical interest. It is the compiler's intention to publish as a second part a more comprehensive and intensive discussion of the material listed and to attempt to express therein a critical evaluation of the most important titles. The problem of what to exclude has been a perplexing one. In fact, the compiler must deprecate any assumption that he has con- sistently followed any logical principle. This list has been developed from titles noted for his own use and thus it is practical in character. It is almost inevitable in such a compilation that some titles have been omitted through oversight or ignorance. This may be true of works of formal bibliographical or biographical character. Others may have been omitted by design, especially those of general character, the exclusion or inclusion of which could only be determined by individual experience and judgment. It has been the compiler's intention to include of these general works only those that relate more specifically to Hispanic-America and are most important to the bibliographer. In accord with this principle, general bibliographies such as Brunet's Manuel du Libraire, and cata- logues of comprehensive

    (ALMOST) EVERYTHING I LEARNED ABOUT NEPALI LITERATURE IS WRONG | 217 Chautari Foundation Lecture 2018 (ALMOST) EVERYTHING I LEARNED ABOUT NEPALI LITERATURE IS WRONG Manjushree Thapa I’ve been rethinking my sense of Nepali literature, and am pleased to have a chance to share my thoughts at Martin Chautari, an organization that I played a very small role in founding back in the 1990s, when it was an informal discussion group among “development” workers.1 Most of us, at the time, were foreign-educated, or actual foreigners. We were well meaning, but we were seeking an intellectual life without any links to Nepal’s own intellectual traditions in the political parties, the universities, the writers and activists. It was particularly under Pratyoush Onta’s leadership that Martin Chautari developed these links and became a site where foreign-educated Nepalis, foreigners, and Nepal’s own intellectual traditions could meet for open debate. Knowledge-generation is a collective enterprise. It is not an endeavor a person undertakes in isolation. I’ve written and spoken before on the thoughts I’ll share here, first in the introduction (Thapa 2017a) to La.Lit, A Literary Magazine Volume 8 (Special issue: Translations from the Margins), which I edited (Thapa 2017b), and then at two talks for the Himalayan Studies Conference at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, in September 2017, and for the Nepal Studies Initiative at the University of Washington, in Seattle, in April 2018. This lecture is a crystallizing of those thoughts, which are still in formation. One caveat: I am not a scholar, but a writer; I am engaged in what Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak calls the “wild practice” (2012: 394).

I show how these renowned contemporary writers challenge stigmas of the disabled body by deconstructing the “ideology of ability” through their poetry, fiction, and autobiographical narratives. Religious and cultural values disable women’s autonomy in general, and create even greater disadvantages for women who are physically disabled. Challenging these cultural stigmas, Waiwa and Ghimire celebrate sexuality and disability as sources of creativity, agency, and identity in narratives that deconstruct cultural or social models of sexuality, motherhood, and beauty. Tribhuvan University Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara Email: [email protected] Abstract: The 1990 restoration of democracy in Nepal has taken a new direction in Nepali writing in English. Though Nepali writing in English was pioneered by Laxmi Prasad Devkota in the 1950s, it took its momentum with the publication of Samrat Upadhyay’s Arresting God in Kathmandu (2000) and Manjushree Thapa’s The Tutor of History published in 2001. They were followed by a flood of other Nepali writers, promoting new trends of English writing in Nepal. The present article, thus, aims to help describe and understand the development of English writing over the decades beginning from the 1990, a period of political change till date. The article also lists Nepali writers and their works in English and English translations since then, annexing a bibliography to area classifications of the genre. It goes on to chronicle the process by which a number of “landmark „proletarian novels‟” (Denning 2007, 706) came to be translated into Nepali from Russian and Chinese, and the ways in which Maoist cadres were inspired and influenced by these works during the course of the “People‟s War” in Nepal between 1996 and 2006. Finally, the discussion moves to a consideration of the relationship between the impact of these translated texts in the Nepali context and broader conceptualisations of “world literature.” Keywords: Nepal, Soviet Union, China, Maoism, communism, translation, world literature Introduction This is a discussion of the afterlife of a number of “landmark „proletarian novels‟” (Denning 2007, 706) which travelled abroad in translated forms to inspire communists and revolutionaries in other countries, decades after their original publication.
