• A Band Together. but Who Knew We'd Find As Durable an Application Of
o R M D EVERY MUSICIAN KNOWS IT’s THE RHYTHM SECTION THAT HOLDS a band together. But who knew we’d find as durable an application of that maxim as the one exemplified by the history of Fleetwood Mac? & Over the last thirty years, Fleetwood Mac has comprised fifteen musicians shuffled through six major lineups, resulting in endless tin- kerings with tone and genre. Yet the two members to survive it all rarely write tunes and never front the recordings. They’re the beat- keepers - drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Me Vie. The fact that a rhythm section could sustain a band through thirty years seems all the more amazing considering the traumatic histories of the band’s shifting array o f stage-front stars. Together, their personal lives have given rock one of its most elaborate and juicy plotlines. (L Religious conversions, spells o f madness, “incestuous” liaisons within the band, drug freak-outs, alleged brainwashings, imperson- Mick ^ stevie ations, everything short of murder have spun Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Fleetwood Mac’s legacy into a story worthy of Buckingham (from left) Scheherazade. & Musically the band has endured just as many twists, moving from blues to rockabilly to laid-back California folk rock - finally to bloom into purveyors of some of the most popular and endur- ing music of the Seventies. (L It all began humbly enough. In 1967, the B Y J I M FÄRBER The band in '69: Peter original foursome convened as arch Fame entrant, Santana). If that wasn’t enough, Rose also saw the Green, Fleetwood, Jeremy devotees of the blues, arriving in the band adding nineteen-year-old Danny Kirwan (who’d played in Spencer, Danny Kirwan, second wave of U.K.

  • Light Shows at the Youth Centre
Light shows at the Youth Centre Transcription of excerpts from interviews with Stuart Davis and Richard Jones Stuart: I went to what was then Malvern School of Art, but at the time the Youth Centre, which was next door, now Malvern Cube, we used to go there in lunch times. And we got friendly with all the people that were the youth, what do they call them, the youth--, the person that was in charge of the youth centre anyway. And they started putting on bands in the evenings, and we started this light show. A light show then was what they used to call a psychedelic light show, it was projections basically. We got a load of bed sheets, which we got sewn together by someone, we used to hang that up at the back of the stage. We would set up on tables at the back of the hall, and we’d have what were called Aldis Projectors, and they were a slide projector with a bowl. And we used to muck around, we’d upgrade them and put Meccano motors on the lenses with flicker wheels. And then in between the lens and the lamp house you would have various effects you could project, whether they were liquid or oils, so you get all these moving effects on the band and on the back. And when I think back it's quite amazing 'cause you had the likes of Jethro Tull, Family, Chicken Shack, who was a very small band with a singer called Christine Perfect, who actually became Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, you know, one of the biggest bands in the world really.

Advance Trade Information BOOKS THE CHAIN 50 YEARS OF FLEETWOOD MAC Pete Chrisp HARDCOVER SPECIAL EDITION They began as a little blues band in London, England, in 1967, named, rather bizarrely, after their tight rhythm section: Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass. Fleetwood Mac. Fifty years later, as they prepare for their gigantic farewell world tour throughout 2018, they remain one of the biggest bands of all time – a position they have held since 1977 when, with the help of John’s wife, Christine McVie, and two virtually unknown American musicians called Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, they released an LP titled Rumours that went on to become the world’s best-selling album. That, in itself, is a remarkable story. Now consider the highs and lows, the successes and failures, the personal turmoil, tragedy and heartbreak through which this band has journeyed over the last 50 years … and the story of Fleetwood Mac becomes one of pure drama. The greatest ever rock ‘n’ roll soap opera. In this independent, lavishly illustrated publication, music writer and journalist Pete Chrisp reveals the true story of how, over the last 50 years, despite all of those confrontations, pinnacles and all-time lows … the chain of Fleetwood Mac remains unbroken. For Linda, Evie, Mollie and Michael – always. Author’s Note While I have been fortunate over the years to have enjoyed the company of various ex-members and/or former employees of Led Zeppelin, it should be born in mind at all times that this is an unauthorised biography, written objectively and with no undue pressure from any outside influence to do anything other than tell the story as I honestly see it. It should also be clearly understood that the italicised ‘flashback’ passages of the text are not the actual words of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant, nor are they actual quotes. Whilst they are all based on thorough biographical research, the facts of which can be found in the Notes & Sources section at the end of this book, the words themselves are the product of my imagination.
