The Quartetto Italiano was the first of the new post-war groups that inaugurated a new golden age of String Quartets: the Quartetto Italiano was formed in 1945, the Juilliard String Quartet and LaSalle Quartet in 1946, and the Janáček and Amadeus quartets in 1947. Audite here brings us three CDs worth of fabulous recordings for RIAS ("Radio in the American Sector" of Berlin). The RIAS studios were excellent, and their engineers highly accomplished, so we have (as with the Amadeus Quartet album I reviewed late last year) an excellent idea of how these musicians sounded, in this case between 1951 to 1963. The group's repertoire is interesting, especially considering the period: Donizetti, Malipiero and Cherubini provide an Italian antipasto, if I may be permitted a metaphor (pun!) in questionable taste (taste!). Their 1959 Ravel interpretation is searching, and sometimes fierce; maybe even more so than their late recordings of core repertoire. This is a standout performance, though it's perhaps less than Gallic. The early String Quartet no. 8 by Schubert, from 1963, has the characteristic QI sound of their studio recordings of the Viennese masters: it's taut and tight and intense, eschewing sentimentality and emphasizing structure over story-telling. The first of the Haydn String Quartets op. 77 is the earliest recording here, from 1951. It's sunnier and more fun (to listen to, and I expect, to play) than the more disciplined Haydn the Quartetto Italiano developed later in their recording career. Welcome Anthea Kreston! The Artemis Quartet welcomes its new member Berlin, 18 January 2016 In the past six months, amidst mourning the death of Friedemann Weigle, the Artemis Quartet also came to the decision of continuing its work as an ensemble. Now, the Artemis Quartet is pleased to announce its new member: the American violinist Anthea Kreston, who will take over the second violin position with immediate effect. In a musical chairs scenario, Gregor Sigl will assume the viola position in the quartet. Andrea Kreston, born in Chicago, studied with Felix Galimir and Ida Kavafian at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, as well as chamber music with the Vermeer Quartet and Emerson String Quartet. Anthea Kreston was a member of the Avalon Quartet - with whom she won the ARD Competition in 2000 - for seven years. In 1999, she founded the Amelia Piano Trio. She has given many concerts in the United States and Europe with both ensembles. Eckart Runge and Anthea Kreston have known each other for twenty years. They met, as members of different ensembles, at a masterclass given by the Juilliard String Quartet. Eckart Runge: “Already then, Anthea struck me as an extraordinarily brilliant musician and someone who has a big personality. She applied for the available position, travelled to the audition from the West Coast [of the United States] and impressed us with her warm-heartedness, boundless energy and - above all - her fantastic qualities as a musician and violinist. Yet this is a true chamber partnership, with K454 demanding a violinist of consummate skill. The opening commences with a stately Largo; it quickly retreats into a tender statement before launching into a swift Allegro with many conversational imitations and parallel lines. An Andante follows in which Mozart achieves a masterly blend of cantabile and beauty. A minor episode darkens the mood while maintaining enchanting lyricism. The concluding movement opens with a statement first spoken by the violin, with intervening episodes sandwiched between reprises of the theme giving opportunities to express Mozart’s penchant for unexpected and delectable melodic twists and turns. Night Flight was originally written as the fourth movement from a sextet called Mephisto in 1990. Ukranian violinist Dmitri Tkachenko commissioned this transcription and debuted it with Kristian Chong in London in 2003. The piece is a danse macabre for the modern age.

As the century progressed, the dominance of complex, Baroque compositional methods had diminished and the style of writing had been simplified, making it easier for an amateur to master. Yet, at the same time in Vienna, the public performance of larger-scale, symphonic music came into vogue. And as this was written for professionals, the composer could explore greater complexity, even bringing back some of the intricate devices of baroque music such as fugues. Furthermore, in the last decades of the century, a full-time, professional quartet was maintained in Vienna by Count Razumovsky for performances at the great houses.
