FAZLULLIN & Murat ARSLAN 10 genama.info 19th Symposium on Mediterranean Archaeology (2015) 12 Nov 2015 Ist SESSION: 10:30 – 10:50 AN EXAMPLE TO THE SUBMERGED PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENTS IN MARMARA SEA: AVŞA ISLAND Günay DÖNMEZ Selcuk University, Underwater Research Center, [email protected] Avsa island in Balikesir Province is located in the southwest of the Marmara Sea, in the Marmara region, is one of the islands that comprise the archipelago termed the Marmara Islands. The first surviving written information concerning the first indigenous people of the island is recorded by the historian Strabon and the geographer Plinyus. In recent years, various shaped flints, bones, tools, spindles, whorls and millstones have been discovered on the coastline of Avşa island, strengthening the idea that settlement was in fact established at an earlier date than is recorded in the ancient literary record. The first research on the region’s settlement was carried out by Prof. Mehmet Özdoğan in 1994. The settlement area was also investigated by Prof. Dr. Nergis Günsenin in 1995. The materials and ruins discovered through underwater investigation conducted in 2015 by our research team are dated to earlier than has been reported in the studies of settlement mentioned above. These remains, lying at a depth of 1.5-2.00 meters underwater, can be easily seen from the coast. From the fact that the mound has been exposed to wave erosion over the years and one part of the mound is today underwater, the other part is on shore, it is understood that the former shoreline is today under the waves and the present shoreline is further inland.

  • Olbia in Pamphylien - Die Epigraphische Evidenz
GEPHYRA 3 2006 1-28 Mustafa ADAK* OLBIA IN PAMPHYLIEN - DIE EPIGRAPHISCHE EVIDENZ Für Friedrich Hild A bstract: Construction work in the old part o f Antalya brought to light a proxeny decree by the Pamphylian city of Olbia for a citizen of Cyzicus, which gives us the first piece o f epi- graphic evidence for the existence of this small coastal town. The inscription, which is to be dated to the fourth century BC, reveals that in the Classical period Olbia was an autonomous polis with the typical city organs such as the ecclesia and boule. As the names of the two citi zens (Pastorides und Pantaleon) mentioned in the inscription show, at least the upper class of Olbia was o f Greek provenance. The author assumes that the city was founded by settlers from western Asia Minor in the course of the Great Colonisation and was, like Phaselis and the neighbouring Aeolian settlements of Thebe, Lyrnessos and Tenedos, probably Greek in character right from the beginning. In addition, Olbia is likely to have played an important mediating role in the lengthy Hellenisation process in the indigenous cities in the Pamphylian plain. Although situated directly on the coast and endowed with a good harbour, Olbia never acquired cross-regional importance throughout its history. The reasons for this are probably to be sought not only in the fact that the city was possessed of only a small territory, but also and principally in the rivalry with the city of Phaselis only a few kilometres to the south. Sev eral suggestions are proferred which refute previous attempts to locate the city near Hurma or Arapsuyu on the western edge o f the great Pamphylian plain.

  • Cilician Programme 2009
19 - 28 June 2009 23 October – 1 November 2009 10 days of excursions to discover the region and one of the last and most important Mediterranean Monk Seal breeding area, together with the staff of the successful conservation project. THE PROGRAMME We believe the local people of the area are the main stakeholders. It is important for the success of the sustainability of the conservation project and the survival of the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, that they feel an integral part. Therefore, during this trip local involvement is hoped to be encouraged whenever possible. We would like to use local guides, accommodation, transport, and especially for coastal trips, use simple fishing boats rented from the artisanal fisherman. Please note that all will be in simple ordnance and a list of recommended equipment during the trip will be provided before your departure. With all our combined efforts, we hope that low-impact ecotourism will be the effective tool to ultimately reach that point where the habitat will accommodate both the monk seal and its human populace in peace. Day 1 Arrival to Adana airport (from Rome or from other airports: please contact the organizer for details). A minibus will be ready there to meet our guests and this vehicle will be available throughout the trip. From Adana to Bozyazi the journey will take approximately 6 -7 hours (~ 310 km). After Tasucu - Silifke a narrow, winding coastal road will start. Although the scenery will be wild, the minibus will relatively reduce its speed. Dinner will be on the way. On arrival to Bozyazi, late in the night, the group will check into Zeysa, a locally owned rustic hotel.
