STRATEGY 021 Project 6 – Clean-up & Recycle
Overview PlasticsǀSA, in partnership with stakeholders, to ensure that plastics are taken out of the environment through national clean-up events and that plastics recycling are promoted.
2017 is the 21st International Coastal Clean-up, which is managed by Plastics SA for Cape Provinces and by KZN Marine Waste Network. Plastics SA is the national coordinators for the ICC and Clean-up and Recycle SA Week.

Benefit to Plastics Industry - To show the support from the plastics industry for a plastics-litter-free environment and promote plastics recycling (Clean-up SA Week, Recycling Day SA and International Coastal Clean-up Day). - To get plastics out of the environment (land, rivers, dam, beaches) through involvement from schools, community and organisations. - To promote plastics recycling to learners, educators and organisations. - Project includes: Water Week (March) World Environment Day (June) Clean-up and Recycle SA Week (11-16 September 2017) Recycling Day SA (Friday – 15 September 2017) International Coastal Clean-up Day (Saturday – 16 September 2017) World Ocean Day (October) Marine Week (October)

Deliverables - Develop and distribute the 400 000 clean-up bags national to organisations (Sponsor partners, partners and PRO’s logos included on all bags). - Ensure Clean-ups are organised and co-ordinated. - Provide a report on Clean-up and Recycle campaign 2017 after event. - Ensure the marketing and promotion of the events (media, websites and other advertising). - Manage the Clean-up and Recycle website - Develop a clean-up and recycle 2017 competition for schools and organisations

2. Souk Trade Fair 2017
Aqua amazing conducted a talk and dissection at the Souk Trade Fair that took place at the Durban Exhibition Centre, this was well attended by mostly families, and provided the perfect opportunity for educational talks around pollution.

Plastics SA also represented the NRF members at the event and spoke about other recyclable materials and how they can be recycled.

Comments: Overview of the event; Hundreds of exhibitors displayed innovative products that promoted energy efficiency and renewable energy, waste minimisation, water conservation, food security and greening concepts that could make your home or office more eco-friendly and help you save on your water and electricity consumption. The Sustainability Living Expo is one of the biggest Sustainable events in SA The expo had over 300 exhibitors. This event was organised by eThekwini Municipality of Durban and focused on educating schools, teachers, students and household consumers on living sustainable lives and looking after the environment. Hugo Ngcobo from Songimvelo Recycling (NRF Youth Ambassador) joined the team to educate the learners on Friday on recycling. The NRF stand was located near the food hall, with all recycling waste streams represented. The event was extremely successful and will continue to support in 2018.

2. Clean-up & Recycle SA – DOW: Project Butterfly
Event Date: 4 October 2017
Venues: Mashemong Primary School, Tembisa
Target: Educators, leaners, community and Industry
Partners: Plastics SA, Sasol, DOW, Aqua Amazing, Destination Green Recycling
Overview: DOW’s Project Butterfly was developed to address one of South Africa’s most pressing and visible environmental issues, which is litter. Its business recognizes its role in ensuring that the end use of the packaging products, are disposed of in a responsible and sustainable way.
Dow (Plastics raw material importer) wants to give a special focus on the educational aspect, regarding waste management and participate in coastal clean-up activities all over the world.

Comments: Overview of the event; DOW approached PlasticsǀSA to assist with a clean-up event after their conference. Plastics SA collaborated with Aqua Amazing to do a shark dissection at the school and Destination Green Recycling (recyclers in Tembisa) to run the clean-up event. The event was opened by the Primary School principal, with the CEO of DOW explaining the purpose of the event. Steven Mabugana wowed the students with the shark dissection and the interesting recycling messages. The talk and dissection was followed up with a river clean up in the township. The event was well attended, with everyone receiving a food parcel and refreshments after the event.
