There, gathered about 14's gate, was a curious assortment of individuals, clothed more or less conventionally, but bearing large amounts of photographic equipment, maps and timetables; occasionally, bystanders could detect such phrases as “Lemme see your shot of W-25" or “the over-head’s going up soon” (How can it be overhead if it’s not over head yet? And just what is it, anyway?) which did little to alleviate their curiosity. However, as the gates were thrown open, and the throngs surged aboard number 14, the strange group was soon forgotten in the struggle for seats. Of course, we knew what was going on; we constituted that group, and, safely aboard our “private coach”, were en route to Oshawa, and our second annual jaunt on the electrified Oshawa Railway. The trip to Oshawa was uneventful, save for the periodic expeditions of several members to the Dinette car to examine the etchings of steam locomotives (so they said).

Edwardian Classicism appeared in the early 20th century and flourished until the First World War. Typical of its style, Hydro Sub-Station No. 2 features brick pilasters with stone capitals, stepped parapet, segmentally arched windows with stone keystones, brick corbelling, and a stone cornice. Hydro Sub-Station No. 2 is a rectangular building, constructed in 1922, with an addition constructed in 1937. The building was originally a square plan, with a front, southern façade made up of two bays. The L-shaped addition was constructed on the north and east ends of the building and designed to match the original design and materials.     Britannia Boat House/Boating Club A Sailing and Social History 1895 to 1918 1 Britannia Boat House/Boating Club A Sailing and Social History 1895 to 1918 Forward Britannia’s fine Clubhouse on the Pier was lost to a fire on August 26, 1918, just a few months before the Armistice was to be signed in railway car on November 11th marking the end of WWI. As one wanders around our current clubhouse and views the photos of our lost, destroyed clubhouse, and the steamers that plied the Ottawa River, it seems difficult to put them into a contemporary context. The historic photos raise questions; how did we get our current Club? If we already had one clubhouse why did we need another? How did we manage to pay for two, especially that huge one on the pier? Who were the people that came by our Club and sailed on those steamers? What happened to these vessels? Why do we have a race to Queen’s Park, when there is not much there? There are rumours of the massive aquatic battles that took place in front of the Club. Did they really happen? Picking an end time period for this piece was straightforward enough, this year being the centennial of the end of WWI, but where to begin? Since this piece focuses on club activities, 1895 seemed to make sense as a start date as it coincides with the construction of our current clubhouse. The Britannia Nautica Club had been founded nine years previously and had been renamed the Britannia Boat House Club on December 28, 1894 to signify its construction.
