Monitoring Medija 1/2012 Press Trends in Croatia 2011
Vozab, D. Press Trends in Croatia 2011. Monitoring medija 2012 Centar za istraživanje medija i komunikacije, Fakultet politickih znanosti, Sveucilište u Zagrebu Monitoring medija 1/2012 Press trends in Croatia 2011 Dina Vozab Centre for Media and Communication Research of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb, has taken the role of collecting data for the World Press Trends 2011 on newspaper industry in Croatia. World Press Trends is an annual report published by WAN-IFRA (World Association Of Newspapers And News Publishers) which presents statistics and analyses on newspaper industries worldwide. The report covers 233 countries and territories, among them Croatia. The following text summarizes the Croatian report on newspaper industry and trends in 2011. Production and circulation The economic problems will affect both direct and indirect support for newspaper industry. Consumers purchased 6, 84% less culture and recreation products (newspapers belong to this category according to Croatian Bureau of Statistics classification) in 2010 when compared to 2009. GfK research showed that in 2011 58% of surveyed households had expenditures in this category and these households spend less in this category than for some other products. The overall lower consumption affects indirect support for newspaper industry which is exemplified in lower investment in advertising in print media (16% decline in 2011 compared to previous year). Total revenue in newspaper publishing industry was 10, 62% lower in 2011 than in 2010. Total circulation of daily newspaper declined for 7,2% in 2011 when compared to previous year and total of 46 printed publications were erased from Croatian Chamber of Economy database, therefore officially closed. -
News in Brief 12 July
Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe OSCE Mission to Croatia News in brief 12 July – 25 July 2006 Prime Minister Sanader visits Serbia On 21 July, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader paid his second official visit to Serbia, further intensifying bilateral relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Sanader made his first visit to Belgrade in November 2004, followed by a reciprocal visit to Zagreb by Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica in November 2005. Prior to their meeting in Belgrade the two Prime Ministers officially opened the newly renovated border crossing between Croatia and Serbia in Bajakovo, Eastern Croatia. At the ceremony attended by representatives of both governments and the diplomatic corps from Zagreb and Belgrade, the Croatian Premier said that "today we are opening the future of new relations between our two countries." Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Koštunica added that both the "Serbian and Croatian governments will work to heal wounds from the past and build a new future for the two states in a united Europe". Later, following talks in Belgrade, both Prime Ministers declared that Serbia and Croatia have a joint objective, to join the European Union, and that strong bilateral relations between the two countries should be the foundation of political security in the region. Prime Minister Sanader commended the efforts both governments had made towards improving the position of minorities in line with the bilateral agreement on minority protection signed between the two countries in November 2004. He went on to stress his cabinet’s wish to see the Serb minority fully integrated into Croatian society. -
Framing Croatia's Politics of Memory and Identity
Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER WORKSHOP: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Author: Taylor A. McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Title: “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Date: 3 April 2018 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Taylor McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Web: taylormcconnell.com | Twitter: @TMcConnell_SSPS | E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the development of Croatian memory politics and the construction of a new Croatian identity in the aftermath of the 1990s war for independence. Using the public “face” of memory – monuments, museums and commemorations – I contend that Croatia’s narrative of self and self- sacrifice (hence “KRVatska” – a portmanteau of “blood/krv” and “Croatia/Hrvatska”) is divided between praising “defenders”/“branitelji”, selectively remembering its victims/“žrtve”, and silencing the Serb minority. While this divide is partially dependent on geography and the various ways the Croatian War for Independence came to an end in Dalmatia and Slavonia, the “defender” narrative remains preeminent. As well, I discuss the division of Croatian civil society, particularly between veterans’ associations and regional minority bodies, which continues to disrupt amicable relations among the Yugoslav successor states and places Croatia in a generally undesired but unshakable space between “Europe” and the Balkans. 1 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Table of Contents Abstract ................................................................................................................................................................... -

AN ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CROATIA AND SERBIA By Marko Kovacic Submitted to Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Supervisor: prof.dr. Anton Pelinka CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary (2011) ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my supervisor, Professor Anton Pelinka, for the valuable comments and suggestions as well as to my academic writing instructor Eszter Timar who has been guiding me throughout academic writing this entire year. Zahvaljujem se i Tinu Gazivodi koji mi je svojim znanjem i iskustvom pomogao shvatiti dinamiku hrvatskog civilnog društva I napokon, poslijednja (i meni najvažnija) zahvala je upućena svim mojim prijateljima koji su me svojim društvom i optimizmom pratili tijekom cijele godine Posebno hvala Melini, Laći i Bakiju! CEU eTD Collection ii ABSTRACT This paper analyses the impact of civil society on the final stage of democratization process – consolidation, using qualitative methodological tools. I start from the theoretical explanation of the concept of democratization and elaborate its specificities in the two countries of the Western Balkans – Croatia and Serbia. By introducing the concept of civil society, I am showing that not only formal governmental institutions play an important role in the consolidation process, but that organized citizens also play a crucial role in consolidation. I use the concept of political opportunity structure which I am applying to the political change in Croatia and Serbia. The theoretical overview of the debates of consolidation and civil society will be supported by two cases where civil society has been crucial, Croatia and Serbia. -

February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4
February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4 His Excellency Franjo Tudjman President of the Republic of Croatia Radi ev Trg 2 41000 Zagreb Croatia Dear President Tudjman: The U.S. Helsinki Watch Committee is deeply concerned by reports of serious human rights abuses by forces responsible to the Croatian government and by individual extremists in Croatia. Our own investigations of these reports, conducted during a series of fact-finding missions to Croatia in the past year, indicate that many of these reports are well-founded. We call upon you to investigate the abuses enumerated in this letter and to punish those responsible for them. We call upon you to take immediate measures to ensure that such violations of human rights do not occur again. The abuses described in this letter include violations of the laws of war in the current conflict between Croatian and Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army, including the summary execution of civilians and disarmed combatants; the torture and mistreatment of detainees; arbitrary arrests and disappearances; destruction of civilian property and the killing of journalists covering the war. In addition to violations connected with the war, Helsinki Watch has also documented restrictions on freedom of expression and the press and interference with the independence of the judiciary. Finally, we are gravely concerned about the harassment, discrimination and rising violence against Serbs not engaged in the armed conflict in Croatia. Rules of War Violations in Croatia by Croatian Forces Violations of the rules of war are often committed by local police officers and members of the Croatian army1 in areas which are under heavy siege by Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army. -
