In around 1920 the influence of neo-classicism on Moser glass was at its height. This artistic and architectural trend was connected with the return of forms typical of classical and Renaissance art. The Karlovy Vary glassworks contributed to it with its speciality – coloured, cut crystal with oroplastic decoration. Some designs, however, despite their year of origin, appear unbelievably modern. This is the result of the range of inimitable Moser colours and their underlaid combinations.

Gold and, more recently, also platinum bands with scenes of battles between the Amazons and Greeks are used on the many forms of the cut-glass vases, boxes and plant-holders, bowls and other accessories. Leo Moser himself worked on a considerable number of the designs. COLOUR AS A MAGIC SHEM

The works of art of the Secession period stressed harmony of line and elegance of proportion. The typically ornamental nature was based on the forms of flowers and leaves, the waves of the sea and other natural motifs. Women were also depicted in a new way, not only in the work of Gustav Klimt and Alfons Mucha. The subtly flowing lines of their hair, clothes and silhouettes became a symbol of beauty. Moser’s Secession-era vases with their plant motifs are a superb example of the art of the Karlovy Vary glassmakers, cutters and engravers. They perfected their mastery from the turn of the 19 th and 20th centuries, when Art Nouveau brought a fresh wind into all branches of art-painting, music, architecture, jewellery-making, furniture-making and fashion. This inspiration made itself most felt in the Central European space between Paris, Vienna and Prague.

The development of engraved floral motifs, originally inspired by Belgian and French models, culminated in 1899 in a specific variation that involved engraving that penetrated deep into the crystal matter. The Moser vases and drinking glass collections originally labelled “Moderne Plastik” and later “Eckentiefgravur” provoked admiration at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and also at exhibitions in London, Turin and St. Louis. You would not guess that the Wersin vase was 80 years old. The well-considered design and masterfully-executed geometric cutting makes it a timeless jewel that could easily be passed off as a new addition to the Moser portfolio. Wolfgang von Wersin designed a collection of vases with more complicated types of edge-cutting such as wedge cuts, hexagonal facets, large diamond-shaped stones and spiral grooves. In 1940 his work for Moser won the Gran Premio award at the VII Triennial in Milan.

Born in Prague, Wersin subsequently worked in Munich and was one of the leading figures of the pre-war Werkbund in Germany. From 1912 he worked with Deutsche Werkstätten in Munich. He also made designs for the Meissen porcelain company and the furniture makers Behr. In addition to art and design, his main interest was architecture, which is reflected in his work with crystal. Rosalin is one of Moser’s most exclusive and most expensive colours. The glass has an admixture of 24 carat gold, which gives it a blaze of different coloured shades, depending on the lighting conditions. The Wersin vase thus could easily have been the model for the Colour of the Year, presented by the Pantone company. Shades such as Fuschia Rose, True Red, Tigerlily, Chili Pepper, Honeysuckle, Tangerine Tango and Living Coral can all be found in a single piece of precision-cut crystal.
