Page 6 of 24 Introduction

Welcome to our Parish Council Newsletter for 2019 and firstly, a big thankyou to everyone who has contributed to the content and delivered it to all of the homes in Dunham Massey.

It has been a privilege to Chair our Parish Council over the last 12 months and to work alongside fellow Councillors, who volunteer their time and expertise for the benefit of residents. It has been lovely to see more new faces at our meetings, more people getting involved in the local issues that affect us all.

The Parish Council has continued to lobby on behalf of residents on a wide range of issues from road repairs, litter and fly tipping, traffic volumes and parking issues. More recently, we have ensured that residents are represented by responding as consultees to the Spatial Framework to consider how proposed development around our boundaries may impact upon the local area. A special thanks to our Vice Chairman, Richard Abbott for all his work leading on this important issue.

The Parish Council has continued to invest in the village and we are pleased that shortly, we will have the new Speed Indicator Display cameras installed across the villages to focus on the problem of speeding traffic. We are also delighted to have commissioned the new village Notice Boards, beautifully crafted by Rev Kevin Johnson from The Chapel in the Fields, Sinderland Green which will grace our village for many years to come. Page 7 of 24 Dunham Massey, is a very special place to live. This is because of the contributions made by our residents, who are active in village life, supporting and managing local groups, businesses and charities, working tirelessly behind the scenes. We have many “unsung heroes” amongst us and beyond, who keep the village vibrant and protect its heritage by volunteering their time and making things happen. On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank everyone involved and encourage residents to offer their support wherever they can.

Elections

Parish Council elections will take place on Thursday 2nd May 2019, at the same time and place as elections for Trafford Councillors.

If you would like to stand for election to the Parish Council, nomination forms can be obtained from https://tinyurl.com/dunham-elections or the Clerk or . Nomination forms must be submitted by hand to the Town Hall between 27th March and 3rd April 2019.

Page 8 of 24 Council Meetings

Council Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (except August) at 8pm in the small meeting room at Dunham Massey Village Hall (use the side door for entry). All residents are welcome. There is a regular item in the agenda for residents to raise any issues with the Council for consideration.

Minutes from the meetings are published on the Trafford website, along with Financial and other information, at www.traffordparishes.gov.uk

Community Grants

The Parish Council has a small-grants scheme which offers grants to recognised “not for profit” community groups. Applications can be made for any purpose which will be of clear benefit to residents of Dunham Massey. Applications for grants should be made using the application form which can be obtained from the Clerk.

Grants are also available from the Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund. The Trust will support eligible charitable projects that have a community, social or environmental focus. Details and application forms can be found at “manchesterairport.co.uk/CommunityTrustFund”

Page 9 of 24 Planning

Details of all Planning Applications can be found on the Trafford Council website. A weekly list is issued and can be found at https://tinyurl.com/traffordplanninglist. This is also publicised in local newspapers. Comments on particular Planning Applications should be sent to the Trafford Planning Department, however you are also welcome to discuss the application in person at any Parish Council Meeting.

Highway Issues

Highway repairs and maintenance is carried out by Amey on behalf of Trafford. The Trafford website has a large “Report It” section where issues can be reported. Navigate to the sections dealing with highways issues, and follow the instructions. You will be given a reference number for each reported issue. If you email a copy of this to the Clerk then we will be able to follow up with Amey and Trafford if necessary.

DUNHAM WATCH

Dunham Watch is a WhatsApp group set up in 2015 as an alternative to traditional neighbourhood watch meetings and is to be used only for urgent crime or safety related messages. Due to the geographical size of Dunham and the number of people living here it is the fastest means of spreading alerts if there are any suspicious or concerning incidents in the village. The WhatsApp members can also call for help if needed. The group currently has 113 members and membership is open to anyone living in the village so we would love to hear from you.

Page 10 of 24 All you need is a mobile phone that will run the WhatsApp app.

There are also weekly police email reports that are forwarded to members regarding burglaries in the Altrincham area.

DUNHAM LIFE

With 96 members Dunham Life is the social offspring of Dunham Watch. It is a separate WhatsApp group which was created because users of Dunham Watch liked having the ability to reach villagers with information quickly and easily, but wanted to avoid diluting the impact of the Watch messages which are for more serious matters.

Dunham Life allows users to distribute news about the more social aspects of village life, such as events in the village hall, pubs etc. and general questions such as where to find a gardener etc.

DUNHAM LOST AND FOUND

As the name implies, this WhatsApp group is to help find anything missing in the village; missing pets is the most popular category. It was set up by members of Dunham Life and Watch, and with 66 members across the village has been enormously successful in reuniting pets with their owners.

To be added to any of the Dunham Watch, Dunham Life, or Dunham Lost and Found groups, or to receive the weekly police emails, please contact: Tracy Carr 07795 574655 [email protected]

Page 11 of 24 DUNHAM THESPIANS

The Dunham Thespians is a long running amateur dramatic society, entertaining residents of the village and beyond since 1922. In the last ten years alone, we’ve done plays by Alan Ayckbourn, Noël Coward and Derek Benfield, along with an adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and a lightly fictionalised account of the story of Ruth Ellis (The Thrill Of Love).

We’re a friendly, down-to-earth group and are very welcoming of new members in any capacity. We are particularly in need of back stage helpers – everything from prompt, props and lighting/sound, to helping make tea on play week.

If you’re interested in joining in any capacity, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Page 14 of 24 ROSE QUEEN

The Rose Queen Festival is a traditional annual event which has been taking place for over 50 years, bringing the village community and local groups together. It involves a procession followed by a fun family day at Dunham Village Hall. This year’s Rose Queen is on Saturday 18 May and the theme we have adopted is “Totally Tropical”. We would love to see you all supporting this local community event. The procession will leave Dunham Massey Hall in Dunham Park at 2.00 pm and proceed along School Lane (which will be closed for a short time) towards Dunham Village Hall. The procession will include a brass band, Morris Dancers, vintage tractors, the Rose Queen retinue and other fancy dress. The crowning of the Rose Queen and Rose Bud will take place at 3.00 pm. In addition to the stalls and games, there will be a fun dog show and plenty of refreshments from the WI (who are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year), Little Heath Farm, Dunham Massey Ice Cream and Dunham Brewery. As an aside, the Rose Queen Committee are looking for new members to become involved with the preparations for Rose Queen Day along with other events that are organised throughout the year, including discos, quiz nights etc. For further information about becoming involved, joining the parade or any other questions about Rose Queen Day itself, please visit Dunham Massey Rose Queen on Facebook or follow @DunhamRoseQueen on Twitter.

Page 15 of 24 The Vine Inn Golf Society VIGS

We are a small friendly society of approximately 40 members that play an average of 10 games a year at various courses within a 20- mile radius. We usually meet around 10am on a Sunday at the venue, enjoy a bacon sandwich prior to arranging the groups. Following the golf, we enjoy a social drink whilst the scores are scrutinised and the prizes awarded! We are always looking for new members so if you require more information or are interested in joining please contact me via email [email protected] or my mobile 07759 012545. There is a small joining fee which includes a society polo shirt and allows for discounted green fees at the venues.

Page 16 of 24 MEN’S BREAKFAST

Dunham MB has been running since February 2013. We have had a wide range of speakers on a range of diverse subjects. We have a raffle for a bottle or two and the proceeds are donated to a charity as directed by our Speaker. The emphasis is on providing a friendly forum where members can meet up and have a chat and share a joke and listen to a talk that usually has a message or prompts reflection - albeit in an informal setting.

We meet on the 4th Saturday monthly, excluding July and August, at 8am at the Axe & Cleaver pub who prepare a hearty breakfast. A nominal £5 donation covers the food plus the tea and coffee that is served prior to and during the meal. We usually have between 30 and 40 gentlemen attending MB each month.

Page 17 of 24 NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL TRUST

The Dunham Massey Estate

The National Trust team have started to look at the long-term planning and vision for the estate beyond the park walls. Under the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) we will see many more new houses being built and its population grow, a prime example of this being at New Carrington where we could see within the next 10 years in excess of 8,000 new homes being built. The park is unlikely to be able to sustain this potential increase in demand for access to green space, so we need to plan for the future; ensuring people can enjoy the green space on the wider estate in a safe and sustainable way.

We also know it is vitally important to ensure the estate is a place where nature and wildlife can thrive as well as somewhere people can enjoy. We want to build on the fantastic work that has already taken place by our farmers to provide wildlife habitats, while being committed to maintaining a productive, working estate. This will become increasingly important as development takes place around us through GMSF and HS2.

With all this change happening we would like to invite residents and businesses in Dunham to help shape our ideas. We want to Page 18 of 24 work with our local communities to ensure we deliver for them as well as for the wider local population now and in the future, which is why we welcome your thoughts and ideas and have set up a series of drop-in session to come and discuss these with us. Please do drop in and chat with us if you can.

Seasonal Programming

This year we are celebrating nature and the people who look after it, in the past and today. You may have already spotted a familiar children's book character around the park and garden... we'll be encouraging children and families to feel connected to nature with Percy the Park Keeper throughout the year with trails and storytelling.

Page 19 of 24 We're really excited to launch 'Faces of Change: Nature’s Champions' on Saturday 23rd March, which features portraits from the National Portrait Gallery's collection of people who've shaped the way we think or feel about green spaces and nature today, including Sir David Attenborough and Beatrix Potter. For the second half of the year we'll be looking at our local nature champions – people who live and work on the estate and unsung heroes who do their little bit for nature every day.

And that's not all - we'll also be exploring Dunham's connection to the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester that happened 200 years ago this year. Volunteer research is being used to form a contemporary art piece, inspired by the spirit of Peterloo, that will be taking place here, at Quarry Bank and in Manchester. Keep an eye on our website for all the details. We look forward to seeing you all this year.
