Next door, Polychrono also boasts many restaurants, bars and entertainment on the glistening sands. The Kassandra peninsula is steeped in history following many excavations uncovering monuments, most likely of the ancient city of Neapolis. Halkidiki is known for its jutting peninsulas which feature Mediterranean forests giving way to sandy beaches in sheltered bays. Kassandra, the most western, is the most developed. The second peninsula is Sithonia. It is less touristy and boasts secluded coves, mountainous villages, verdant valleys and isolated beaches. The third is Mount Athos. It is a closed monastic community where the entrance is only allowed to men with special permission. You can still admire Mount Athos at a distance if you join a boat trip along the coastline. Halkidiki is so picturesque and has the magical ability to please everyone! If you can tear yourselves away from the 71 alluring beaches over 550km of coastline, you should drive around and visit the impressive sites such as the Cave of Petralona, Byzantine towers, ancient monuments, beautiful monasteries and special vineyards and olive groves. Mavrobara Lake is 3km west of Polychrono where you can hike or rent bikes to explore the alluring nature, local wildlife and the gurgling springs. It is very pretty and worth a visit for a picnic or a stroll. Halkidiki offers endless biking opportunities. There is a Halkidiki bike guide for directions and inspiration. There are wonderful hiking and climbing opportunities along several trails and peaks including Mount Holomontas, Mount Itamos and Mount Stratoniko. Petralona’s Cave is located in the western part of Mount Katsika. It was accidentally discovered in 1959 and is full of red-earth covered stalagmites and stalactites earning its other name of the Cave of the Red Stones. In 1960 the remains of the skeleton were found approximately 700,000 years old! Abstract: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are recognized as a serious and growing public health epidemic in Europe, and are a cause of major losses in livestock production worldwide. This review is an attempt to present a summary of results from studies conducted over the last century until the end of the year 2020 regarding ticks, tick-borne pathogens, and tick-borne diseases in Greece. We provide an overview of the tick species found in Greece, as well as the most important tick-borne pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa) and corresponding diseases in circulation. We also consider prevalence data, as well as geographic and climatic conditions. Knowledge of past and current situations of TBDs, as well as an awareness of (risk) factors affecting future developments will help to find approaches to integrated tick management as part of the ‘One Health Concept’; it will assist in avoiding the possibility of hotspot disease emergencies and intra- and intercontinental transmission.

  • GIS Applications As a Tool for Tourism Planning and Education: a Case Study of Chalkidiki
CASE STUDY GIS applications as a tool for tourism planning and education: A case study of Chalkidiki Spyros Avdimiotis Thomas Mavrodontis Athanasios S. Dermetzopoulos Konstantinos Riavoglou SUMMARY Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are now recognized widely as a valuable tool for managing, decision making, analyzing, and displaying large volumes of diverse data pertinent to many local and regional planning activities. However, the number of GIS applications for regional tourism planning and education has not mushroomed as in other fields. This is also reflected in the field of sustainable tourism where the adoption of new technologies has been rather slow. Nonetheless, sustainable tourism decision-making and carrying capacity estimation has a lot to benefit from using such technologies. GIS can be used for managing various information needs, estimating indicators and, generally, assisting decision making in the planning phase, as well as in the monitoring and evaluation phases. In the field of tourism education GIS is just starting to become known as a valuable analytical tool by tourism/ hospitality firms and as a tourism economic development tool. However, college graduates with both tourism and GIS skills are virtually non-existent. The case of the Prefecture of Chalkidiki, Greece demonstrates the necessity and the value of such technologies. Key words: sustainable development; tourism education; decision making support; carrying capacity; Greece INTRODUCTION One of the most remarkable technological innovations al and non spatial data from the geographic world for in tourism planning and decision making is Geographic a particular set of purposes that varies for each disci- Information Systems (GIS). We invite you to join us! more information: www.annahiking.nl (4-4-2020) MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra About AnnaHiking and the Kassandra Guide In 1991 we visited Greece for the first time. Our love for the country, the culture, the climate, the food, the language and the Greek has grown ever since. We feel at home here and want to communicate this feeling to others. Many people are familiar with the Greek “islands with beautiful beaches”. Many islands also boast a splendid inland with historical paths, ideal for hiking and biking. Kassandra on Halkidiki is such an island with much more on offer than beaches alone, and we’d love to introduce it to you. The local association published the website Kassandra Guide. The chairman called upon AnnaHiking to promote the island for its hiking and biking opportunities. As these are plentiful, we gladly obliged! In cooperation with the people from Kassandra Guide we explored several hiking and biking routes and described them in detail. We regularly revise the routes and the description where necessary. As an individual traveller we offer you these descriptions together with GPS-tracks and marked detailed maps, so you can find your way easily. We also offer you an information package with background information, tips for the best meals and several other useful trivia.

Syst. Eng., Strasse des 17. Juni 135, 10623, Berlin, GERMANY, [email protected] Abstract The Sani-Afytos area in the Kassandra Peninsula (Chalkidiki) was the area of systematic geothermal exploration. Based on deep oil borehole data, the Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary sediments show significant thickness reaching 3600 m and cover the metamorphosed Mesozoic, mainly carbonate, basement. The detailed water temperature investigation proved the presence of sub-thermal waters (20- 28°C) at depths up to 300 m and the spatial distribution of the isothermal curves at depths of 150 and 200 m according to the main NW-SE and SE-NW tectonic structures of the area. Through the construction of geothermal exploration and production wells at depths of 422-583 m, thermal waters of 31.7-36°C were detected within the Upper Miocene sediments. The average value of the geothermal gradient was calculated to be 3-4°CI 100 m.
