  • Aquila Theatre's Mission Is to Make Classical Works
Aquila Theatre’s mission is to make classical works accessible to the greatest number. A play becomes ‘classical’ because we recognize that after a time it transcends the original culture it was created for. It retains the power to provoke the central question of what it means to be human. As a company dedicated to the classics, we feel a responsibility to acknowledge and explore newfound classical works. Aquila was founded in London in 1991 by Peter Meineck. In 1997, Aquila became a US non-for-profit organization and is currently based in New York. Aquila’s programs include: PRODUCTIONS IN NEW YORK CITY: Aquila is a major part of New York's theatrical landscape, producing a regular season of plays. Aquila recently produced: The Trojan War: Our Warrior Chorus, based on the writings of Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles and reimagined through the experiences of modern day military veterans at Brooklyn Academy of Music; Romeo and Juliet, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Philoctetes at GK ArtsCenter in Brooklyn, a staged workshop production of A Female Philoctetes at BAM Fisher’s Hillman Studio as part of our YouStories program, Euripides’ Herakles at BAM, Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the GYM at Judson, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University, and Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and Homer’s The Iliad: Book One Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

  • Arts Midwest Announces 2020-2021 Shakespeare in American
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, June 29, 2020 ALANA HORTON at 612.238.8001 [email protected] Arts Midwest Announces 2020-2021 Shakespeare in American Communities Grants $1.17 Million Will Support Virtual and In-Person Shakespeare Programming for Youth during the COVID-19 Pandemic MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Arts Midwest today announced the recipients of $1.17 million in Shakespeare in American Communities grants, with $1 million going to professional theater companies partnering with schools, and $170,000 going to organizations partnering with facilities in the juvenile justice system. Now in its 18th year, Shakespeare in American Communities is a theater program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. By providing grants to theater companies that produce Shakespeare’s works, the program supports high-quality productions and educational activities in middle schools, high schools, and juvenile justice facilities throughout the United States. In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these performances and educational events may take place virtually or in person between August 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021. “Many of Shakespeare’s plays were written during a plague. Major works like Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest were created in a time of extreme difficulty and adversity.” said Christy Dickinson, Arts Midwest’s senior program director. “The goal of Shakespeare in American Communities has always been to help Shakespeare’s works come alive for students, allowing young people to develop social and emotional skills important to their success. We’re proud that this work continues despite the challenges of this year, thanks to our theater companies who are pivoting their programming to help students connect with Shakespeare, teaching artists, and actors in new ways.” Since the program’s inception in 2003, Shakespeare in American Communities has introduced more than three million middle and high school students to the power of live theater and the masterpieces of William Shakespeare.

re: vs. Scott L. Newstok, Yale University and Gustavus Adolphus College Abstract How might the title of Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet preliminarily inform our reading of this play? The "versus" seems to promise pugilistic as well as legal antagonism; more speculatively, this review posits an antagonism between staged productions and filmic conventions, with special attention to the song (and John Ford film) My Darling Clementine (1946). Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet, by David Dalton, Jeremy Beck, and Christopher Patrick Mullen. Quinnopolis, NY. Shakespeare Association of America Annual Convention, Philadelphia. April 15, 2006. Performed by Jeremy Beck and Christopher Yeatts. A banal observation: Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet immediately invites some kind of a response to its title. Before the show even commences, the audience will have already decided to attend not Hamlet or The _____ Theatre Company's Production of Hamlet or Hamletmachine (first performed 1977; Müller 1984) or The Marowitz Hamlet (first performed 1977; Marowitz 1978) or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (first performed 1966; Stoppard 1967) or any number of the dozens of other adaptations of the play, but rather Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet. How could a title animate a performance? Shakespeare's Hamlet was itself a title re-animating a previous version of the play, as we are so often reminded by those who insist on evacuating any immaterial trace of a Shakespearean agency, leaving us only with a ghost of an author. This long- since familiar skepticism tilts at a gigantic windmill, much as the two actors stutter at the ghost whom (that?) we cannot see onstage in Quinnopolis vs. Hamlet. But even if ghosts do not present themselves, they can still spook us.
