SIMPLY JON UNDERWOOD breaks his river cruising duck with a journey of exploration through Sensational the South of France aboard Emerald Liberte. I DON’T know if you’re aware of this but apparently Australians have something of a reputation abroad. According to my extensive research, it’s a known fact among overseas destinations that Aussies love to splash their holiday cash, travel far and wide to see more than the usual tourist haunts... and don’t mind paying for some quality F&B along the way. All of which makes a river cruise through the South of France almost the perfect holiday. Of course, Australians have been coming to France for decades, drawn by the well publicised charms of Paris and, in recent years, to mark significant wartime anniversaries. The Normandy battlefields and ‘the City of Lights’ are all in the north, however, leaving the south relatively unexplored by those from Down Under. Thankfully that is changing with Evergreen running their seven-night/eight- Main: Chalon. Delicious desserts aboard Emerald Liberte, pictured right in Tournon. Below right: A typical French house in Arles who are delighted you stopped and had a look around – not always the case in a place like Paris. My starting point was the charming and ancient town of Arles in Provence. Julius Caesar founded the town in 46BC and the Roman influence can still be seen throughout, with an amphitheatre, theatre and baths drawing plenty of modern day visitors. Julius may be long gone but historians got extremely excited a few years ago when divers found a bust, purportedly of the famous Roman emperor, in the Rhône. It now sits in the town museum and if it is truly the great man, it is the oldest known sculpture of him in existence. While doubt may surround this particular work of art, there is no arguing the influence Arles had on Van Gogh. He spent 15 months here between 1888 and 1889 and in that time knocked out some 200 paintings (including Sunflowers), eight of which are on display in a museum dedicated to him. Admission to the exhibition is possibly the best €9 you will spend as you can almost reach out and touch such works as Entrance to a Quarry, The Weeders and Olive Orchard. Arles is also home to the gaudy yellow restaurant made famous in Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at Night and where, famously, he is alleged to have cut off part of his ear after a row with Gauguin. You can’t miss it because hordes of Japanese tourists pose outside for photos, somewhat irreverently holding their ear lobes! From Arles, Liberte headed to Avignon, home of the grand Palais des Papes (Pope’s Palace) and a famous, half-demolished bridge. Yet it was the memorial wall containing the names of the 422 people (some of them as young as five) sent by the German occupiers to various camps during World War Two that stuck with me the most. In Tournon you’ll find Tain l'Hermitage, one of the best and most expensive wines in France. While that might be a little out of your price range, the good news is the

IT SOUNDS like the start of a well worn joke. A Russian, a Scot and two Brits take off on a quest for fun in the sun and an escape from the Sydney winter. But after our Hawaiian Airlines flight from Sydney to Honolulu and a good six hours sleep, we were the ones laughing, arriving full of beans and with our empty suitcases ready to be filled on our flop, drop and shop. Staying slap bang in the middle of everything at the Embassy Suites by Hilton, we were pleasantly surprised by the size of our two bedroom/bathroom suite with

Bars There are so many to choose from as Waikiki is overflowing with them, from traditional American-style sports bars, fancy cocktail bars to tropical Hawaiian beach bars. Make sure you Google ‘happy hours’ before you head out so you get the most out of your precious cocktail budget. We particularly loved RumFire at the Sheraton Waikiki, which has live music, the ON TOUR best beach sunsets and the most delicious Girls pupus (Hawaiian tapas). We also recommend the Lanai bar at The Laylow hotel for imaginative cocktails, the coolest vibe and the sexiest waiters. The Royal Hawaiian beach bar is perfect for a sundowner and we loved the Kiwi Villa Maria sav blanc they had on their wine list. Kelley O’Neil’s Irish bar has live music, very strong G&T's, a floor show of slightly inebriated but very entertaining punters attempting to out-dance and out-sing each other, but more importantly for our single lady readers, this is where you go to find your ‘Maverick’ as the place is full of Air Force and military boys who are polite, respectful, and I have to say, very easy on the eye. (If the Maverick reference has you baffled, watch Top Gun or ask your mum!). Restaurants The food scene in Hawaii has improved dramatically since my last visit five years ago. We fuelled up each morning on the legendary Embassy breakfast and alternated each evening between restaurants and the food trucks. With tax and tipping eating out is not cheap, but we also made use of the

TAKE A TRIP TO party town

HAWAII IS renowned for its scenery, food, beaches, sunshine, multicultural experiences and unparalleled array of outdoor activities. But do some road tripping on your next visit and you’ll discover that another big – if little-heralded – element of Hawaii’s appeal is its diversity of great towns. With Honolulu on Oahu the state’s only true ‘city’, Hawaii is all about the charms of its multitude of towns. So deep is resident love of and pride in their hometowns that many celebrate their awesomeness with recurring parties showcasing where they live. The Hanapepe Town Friday Art Night keeps its namesake Kauai town’s main street restaurants, bake shops, retailers and impressive number of artisan galleries open into the evening each week for a post-sunset art stroll. Maui Fridays rotates its evening weekly main street parties through the towns of Wailuku, Lahaina, Makawao, Kihei and, on months with five Fridays, Lanai City. Kailua-Kona closes a portion of its bayside Ali’i Drive each month to accommodate the artist, merchant and food booths of its Kokua Kailua Village Stroll while the restaurants, bars and retailers of Hilo’s historic downtown grid bring in live music and evening revelry for Aloha First Friday. Meanwhile, the art galleries, boutique retailers and mod-cool eateries of Honolulu’s Chinatown and Kaimuki neighbourhoods welcome bustling after work crowds to the First Friday Downtown Art Walk and Third Fridays Kaimuki town stroll. Annual town celebrations to keep in mind when planning your next Hawaii visit include Koloa Plantation Days and the Waimea Town Celebration, both on Kauai, both celebrating their namesake towns’ agricultural histories. There’s the Island of Hawaii’s Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in Kailua-Kona and Ka’u Coffee Festival in Pahala, both honouring their districts’ award-winning java. Other events not to be missed include The Lanai Pineapple Festival, the springtime Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival on Hawaii Island, Oahu’s I Love Kailua Town Party, Maui’s Makawao Fourth of July Rodeo and Parade and Lahaina’s Fourth of July Celebration and Fireworks. And remember, everyone’s a townie at these parties. Including you. ■ Information courtesy Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau. gohawaii.com

Swimming with gentle giants DEBBIE SPROULE reports on the experience of a lifetime at the World Heritage-listed site of Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia.

THE LOUIS Armstrong song What a Wonderful World springs to mind after a day with Ocean Eco Adventures having experienced their whale shark swim. In my first encounter with one of these gentle giants my feelings were a mixture of excitement, awe and admiration. This was a trip of a lifetime and a treasured memory. The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast is one of the few places on earth where you can swim with whale sharks – the world's largest fish. Globally, it's very rare to find these creatures so close to shore, but they visit Ningaloo every year between March and July. We chose to book with Ocean Eco Adventures as they have had a 100 per cent success rate for the last two seasons and earn rave reviews on TripAdvisor. We found the best place to stay for luxury, beach, views and tranquillity was the Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort in Exmouth. Located in the Marina Village, it’s the only four-and-a- half star resort in the area. Just metres from Sunrise Beach on the Ningaloo Reef, it offers hotel rooms, 68 apartments and one- and two-bedroom bungalows, an award-winning restaurant, pool and gymnasium. The feel of the resort is relaxed as it has a very open layout and is built to compliment and capture its surroundings. We loved an early morning walk along the beach, a swim in the pool with views of the ocean, or sitting on the balcony in the evening with a glass of bubbly admiring the view and the peace.
