Eider numbersin the North Clyde arearemain quite constantthroughout the winter, with an influx of birds, mainly juveniles, in the late summer.These birds subsequentlydisappear from the area either as a result of increased mortality or by competitive exclusion by adult birds. Attendanceat a mussel farm in the areawas highest throughout the winter, and male to female sex- ratio was higher here than in other areas. Some breeding eiders from the North and West of Argyll move into the Clyde during the winter, but these represent only a small proportion of the wintering population. Eider wintering distribution can be influenced by aquaculturesites in some areas, although the effect on population growth is unclear. 2. The activity patterns of foraging eiders on natural mussel beds is strongly influenced by tidal height whereason mussel farms there is no such effect. In wild-feeding flocks, different areasare utilised at differing periods of the tidal cycle, perhapsas a method of keeping a uniform optimal dive-depth. Birds feeding on natural mussel beds dived on average three times as frequently as those feeding on mussel farms, and so clearly had to work harder to meet energyrequirements. 3.97% of Scottish mussel farmers contactedreported eiders as a pest species, and 21% also suffered damagefrom goldeneyes.Losses of stock to feeding eiders can be huge, and the fmancial cost considerable,averaging 14000 per farm per year (1994-1998).Attendance at farms tendedto peak during early spring and late autumn. Many damagelimitation measureswere employed p by farmers,with only one, netting, giving unambiguoussuccess. 4. Worker presence on mussel farms decreasedeider attendanceby 95%. Chasing the birds by boat significantly reduced numbers of feeding eiders and goldeneyesin the short-term,by 91 and 51% respectively. This effect was short-lived, particularly with goldeneyes.There was also evidenceto suggestthat disturbancelowers the subsequentfeeding rate of goldeneyes on musselfarms. 2 5. Laser fight significantly reducednumbers of diving ducks on mussel farms, however its efficacy is reducedas ambient fight levels increase.As a result, its use is often restricted to periods around sunrise and sunset. Different populations of eiders showed significantly different sensitivities to laser light. Sequentialtrials of the laser fight on adjacentfarms showedthat birds were initially scaredfrom one site to the next, but repeatedregimes moved birds out of the area. 6. Trials of an Underwater Playback System (UPS), replaying recordings of chase-boatengines, gave significant reductionsin eider numbersof 50-80%. A control trial with the playback of an unassociated noise gave no significant reduction in numbers.The meanreturn time of birds to the farm after chasing by boat also increasedsignificantly during UPS trials. The long-term habituation of ducks to this system was negligible with occasionalreinforcement by boat chasing. 7. On the basis of these scientific trials and observations,recommendations to mussel farmers are made in an advisory booklet (Appendix III). Netting designs are presentedand possible use of UPS or laser light on farms is reviewed. p 3 Chapter 1 General Introduction Chapter I- Generalintroduction Introduction This thesis is set out with the intention that each chapter can be read in isolation, with no need for cross-reference,and chaptersare thus presentedin a journal format. This general introductory chapter will outline the background information relevant to this study, beginning with a brief overview of the mussel farming industry. This is followed by brief descriptions of the ecology of the relevant ducks. Finally, the actual and potential interactions between the two will be discussed,and the aims and scopeof the project will be described. Mussel farming, diving ducks and reduction of losses There are two main methodsof mussel(Mytilus edulis) farming; bottom culture and suspendedculture on ropes. It is the latter that is generally practised in Scotland. Suspended culture has two main designs. Raft culture involves hanging a large number of the ropes,or droppersin a densegrid from a moored floating platform. Long-line farms consist of one or more long rope head-lines, supported by a series of large floats, from which the droppers are hung at regular intervals.

    PRIORITY MARINE FEATURE (PMF) - FISHERIES MANAGEMENT REVIEW Feature HORSE MUSSEL BEDS Image Map Image: Rob Cook Description Characteristics - Horse mussels (Modiolus modiolus) may occur as isolated individuals or aggregated into beds in the form of scattered clumps, thin layers or dense raised hummocks or mounds, with densities reaching up to 400 individuals per m2 (Lindenbaum et al., 2008). Individuals can grow to lengths >150 mm and live for >45 years (Anwar et al., 1990). The mussels attach to the substratum and to each other using tough threads (known as byssus) to create a distinctive biogenic habitat (or reef) that stabilises seabed sediments and can extend over several hectares. Silt, organic waste and shell material accumulate within the structure and further increase the bed height. In this way, horse mussel beds significantly modify sedimentary habitats and provide substrate, refuge and ecological niches for a wide variety of organisms. The beds increase local biodiversity and may provide settling grounds for commercially important bivalves, such as queen scallops. Fish make use of both the higher production of benthic prey and the added structural complexity (OSPAR, 2009). Definition - Beds are formed from clumps of horse mussels and shells covering more than 30% of the seabed over an area of at least 5 m x 5 m. Live adult horse mussels must be present. The horse mussels may be semi-infaunal (partially embedded within the seabed sediments - with densities of greater than 5 live individuals per m2) or form epifaunal mounds (standing clear of the substrate with more than 10 live individuals per clump) (Morris, 2015).

Hundreds of years of MacFarlane settlements have given way to sheep and weekend hikers; BOTTOM LEFT: Mapping the foundation of a shieling (Site A1) cotland has traditionally evoked images of inin thethe uplandsuplands overlookingoverlooking LochLoch LomondLomond plaids, bagpipes, haggis, thrift, hospitality, and sheep as far as the eye can see. More recently, another image has been added: that of Mel Gibson as the revered Scottish patriot William SWallace in the movie Braveheart, proudly proclaiming his desire for freedom from his English oppressors. While there are 5 million residents in Scotland today, there are more than 15 million people of Scottish extraction scat- tered all over the world. Many of the displaced modern Scots celebrate their ancestry by wearing kilts, displaying tartans, and attending “Scottish Games” every summer. Sometimes it appears that some of these overseas Scots want to believe that they are descended from kilted kings and clan chiefs who lived in turreted stone castles.
