Welcome to the High Coast archipelago – an excellent destination for sailors. The three municipalities of Örnskölds- vik, Kramfors and Härnösand can offer hugely varied sailing – with exciting scenery featuring unique formations, deep bays and high mountains. Guest harbours with a multitude of activities and facilities and secluded natural harbours with fantastic scenery. This is where the mountains meet the sea and vice versa. Fishing villages, surströmming (fermented herring), smoked whiteﬁsh and rocky shores are just some of what’s on offer here. Some of the attractions are accessible by tour boat or car if you don’t have your own boat.

13 SOUTH ulvön

At the southern tip of Ulvön’s south island lies a nature reserve that was established in 1971. Attractive stone rubble, rare plants and a number of small bogs with characteristic flora are to be found in the area. Gnarled, old pines and alder dot can be found at the edges of the bogs. At certain points the cliffs drop steeply into the sea, but most of the coastline consists of rocky outcrops. At Lång- viken and Flaseviken you can take a dip from fine sandy beaches. Just outside the nature reserve is Rensviken, a sheltered lagoon with a shallow inlet that provides an example of a bay in the final phase of barrier formation. Take a trip on the tour boat Ture to Fäbodviken where the excellent hiking trails start. In winter 2007-2008 Ulvö Kapellag, with the aid of contributions from the County Administrative Board and the EU, carried out restoration of three buildings at Nya Gruvan on South Ulvön and these now offer an interesting insight into mining history.

15 LIFE ON THE ISLAND By the end of the 19th century so many tourists were visiting Ulvön that a hotel was built in 1905, followed the following year by the Graneliden guest house, which is now privately owned. Several of the ﬁshermen furnished the baker’s cottage and the boathouse, for example, and rented them out, often to the same families, who returned year after year. Such initiative brought a welcome addition to the ﬁshermen’s coffers.

Together with drying and salting, the method of preserving food by fermenting is as old as mankind. Fermented herring has always been around wherever herring and humans are to be found.

Several factors have made Ulvön and Ulvöhamn the sur- strömming capital of Sweden, e.g. they were first to pre- pack this delicacy in tins. This happened around 1890 and means that the island will be forever associated with sur- strömming. Today there are two salting houses on Ulvön. One smaller one, Söderbergs Fisk, and one so-called con- cept salting house, Ulvö Lilla Salteri, producing brands such as Erik den Röde. Ulvö Lilla Salteri also offers tours of its salting house, with demonstrations, where in spring you even have the chance to prepare your own unique brand. Surströmming Universitetet was founded on Ulvön on 13 February 2012, with the aim of spreading knowledge about surströmming as a food, its history, culture, science, prepa- ration and culinary quality.

On the outer fringes of the archipelago lies the fishing village of Grisslan, idyllically situated on two islands with a narrow sound between. A footbridge links the islands of Grissleön and Vågön. You will find walking trails, viewpoints and a picturesque 17th-century fishermen’s chapel with elegant contents. Accessible by boat. On the western side of Vågön is a new natural harbour with jetty, sauna, public cabin and toilets. The beach is suitable for bathing.

South of Köpmanholmen lie Strängöarna and Högholmen. At the beginning of the 20th century 250 people lived on Strängöarna, most of them working at the sawmill, Örn- sköldsvik’s ﬁrst steam sawmill, constructed in 1836.
