The main element of this phenomenon in architectural design and such (designing) became the technological possibilities of the use of new materials and, as a consequence, the creation of unique, its plastic buildings museums of new generation.     Transfers of Modernism: Constructing Soviet Postwar Urbanity The housing shortage during the postwar period has brought a new surge in the development of prefabrication technologies, especially in 1950s East Germany, France and the Soviet Union— the countries that suffered significant physical damage from the war. Although the prefabrication building techniques were evidently not an invention of the MASHA PANTELEYEVA 1950s and there has been a long tradition of similar types of construction and experi- Princeton University mentation in building culture, the need for a new and improved efficiency in construction rapidly emerged in the situation of an extreme postwar housing crisis. Formed by the multiple geopolitical and economic aspects of the postwar architectural context, the new method focused on the construction with large concrete panels prefabricated offsite, which allowed cutting down production costs and significantly reducing time of construc- tion. This development was inseparable from architecture’s political and social context: most of the building associated with the new typology in the reconstruction period was subsidized by the state, characterized by the intense involvement of political figures. Originally developed in France with the initiative of the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urbanism in the late 1940s, the large-panel system building experienced a rapid adapta- tion across Europe: its aesthetic and technological qualities underwent “back-and-forth” cultural alterations between the countries, and eventually determined the failure of the system in the West, and its long-lasting success in Eastern Europe. The technological basis of most European prefabricated buildings was developed in European states with stable social-democratic policies, particularly in Scandinavia, Great Britain, and France.

    Romanov News Новости Романовых By Ludmila & Paul Kulikovsky №138 September 2019 New Bust to Emperor Alexander III at St. Nicholas Church in Polyarny City A monument to Emperor Alexander III was solemnly opened and consecrated in Polyarny city On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Polyarny, a solemn opening ceremony of the bust of Emperor Alexander III took place on the territory of St. Nicholas Church. Polyarny is a city in the Murmansk region, located on the shores of the Catherine’s harbour of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea, about 30 km from Murmansk. The city is home to the Northern Fleet and as such is a closed city. The port was laid down in the summer of 1899 and named Alexandrovsk in honour of Emperor Alexander III. In 1931 it was renamed Polyarny., Parishioners of the church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker and Rector Archpriest Sergei Mishchenko, initiated and sponsored the bronze bust of the great Russian Emperor Alexander III. The monument was made with donations from parishioners and in February 2019 was delivered from the workshop of Simferopol to Polyarny. The opening and consecration ceremony was conducted by Bishop Tarasiy of the North Sea and Umba. The St. Nicholas Church, with the bust of Emperor Alexander III standing under the bell tower. Stories from Crimea In 2019, there were two extraordinaire reasons to visit Crimea and Yalta in particular - the 100 years anniversary of several members of the Imperial Romanov family, including Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, leaving Russia from Yalta - and 125 years since the repose of Emperor Alexander III in Livadia.

This work was conducted in the context of Belarusian regional studies and concerns only the Belarusian part of Palesse, the territory which was subject to Belarusian ethnic processes in the early twentieth century and, in the second half of the twentieth century, was included in Belarusian territory; it does not apply to the entire region, that is Russian Poles’e, Ukrainian Polisse, and Polish Polesie. The analyzed rituals include all three stages of an East Slavic wedding ceremony: before the wedding, the wedding itself, and after the wedding. The common features and local differences of West and East Palesse weddings are discussed. This article is a part of my research entitled “Historical and Ethnographic distribution of wedding rites in Belarusian Palesse.” It is based on the analysis of a wide range of published sources, archival materials, and unpublished ethnographic field studies, including my own. Most of the sources used in this paper are from the first half of the twentieth century. However, taking into account the relative stability of traditional culture (at least prior to recent modernization) the use of published sources from the second half of the XIX century seems possible in a study like this.
