    SOPRANO CORNET: THE HIDDEN GEM OF THE TRUMPET FAMILY by YANBIN CHEN (Under the Direction of Brandon Craswell) ABSTRACT The E-flat soprano cornet has served an indispensable role in the British brass band; it is commonly considered to be “the hottest seat in the band.”1 Compared to its popularity in Britain and Europe, the soprano cornet is not as familiar to players in North America or other parts of world. This document aims to offer young players who are interested in playing the soprano cornet in a brass band a more complete view of the instrument through the research of its historical roots, its artistic role in the brass band, important solo repertoire, famous players, approach to the instrument, and equipment choices. The existing written material regarding the soprano cornet is relatively limited in comparison to other instruments in the trumpet family. Research for this document largely relies on established online resources, as well as journals, books about the history of the brass band, and questionnaires completed by famous soprano cornet players, prestigious brass band conductors, and composers. 1 Joseph Parisi, Personal Communication, Email with Yanbin Chen, April 15, 2019.     BEWARE OF ISOs (Instrument-Shaped Objects) These are the cheap instrument-shaped objects found on online auctions, other internet sources, and large chain stores. Although we will refrain from mentioning specific stores, keep in mind that if you can also buy toilet paper, jeans, or tires from the store, then it is not a music store, and it will not have musically knowledgeable personnel. You get what you pay for. If it’s inexpensive, it’s not a quality instrument. A bad instrument is be harder to play in tune and with good tone quality, will likely produce a non-standard instrument sound, will not blend well in the band, will be impossible to repair correctly, and will almost always frustrate the student to the point of eventually quitting. Many repair people refuse to work on these instruments, because they cannot guarantee the results. A good quality student instrument made by a respected manufacturer, with proper care, can last throughout middle school, high school, and beyond. Woods _______________________________ Co-Adviser School of Music ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to identify and assess methods of teaching and learning jazz trombone improvisation that have been implemented by jazz trombone professors. Its intent was to describe learning procedures and areas of trombone study. A survey instrument was designed after interviewing 20 professional jazz trombonists. The survey was pilot-tested (n = 9) and adjustments were made. Jazz trombone professors (n = 377) were sent questionnaires, with a response rate of 28 percent after an additional reminder to all and follow-up phone calls to one-third of the sample. Of the 106 total respondents, 58 were deemed to be eligible participants as both trombonists and as teachers of jazz improvisation. Three areas were explored: 1) early stages of development, 2) teaching, and 3) trombone technique. Data showed that most of the professors (77%) had learned to improvise between 7th-12th grades. They identified the most important method of learning for themselves as listening and playing-along with recordings. Learning occurred on their own for many, though college also had an impact. An examination is conducted of the life, career and musical styles of Richmond Matteson, an influential jazz euphonium and tuba performer of the twentieth century. The study includes a brief history of the euphonium's role in concert bands. A description of Matteson's background as a musician and clinician including education, influences and career changes will also be discussed. Analysis of Matteson's improvisational style and a transcription from the recording Dan's Blues is included. A formal analysis of Claude T. Smith's Variations for Baritone is provided, as well as a brief biography of the composer. Matteson's stylistic traits which Smith employed for the composition of Variations for Baritone are illustrated.
