The Academy Award-nominated documentary anchors special programming that commemorates the end of the Vietnam War. See page 9 Community Gathers for Film and Discussion on Youth Homelessness PBS Hawaii recently joined the Hawaii People’s Fund and Hawaii Women in Filmmaking in organizing a free Community Cinema screening of The Homestretch, which airs on Independent Lens on Monday, April 13 at 10:00 pm. (See page 8 for more on the film.) Victoria Cuba, a graduate of Waipahu High School and our HIKI NŌ digital learning initiative, participated in an audience discussion after the screening. Victoria, who was homeless in high school, is now attending and dorming at University of Hawaii at Manoa. Community members involved in programs serving homeless children and teens also shared their experiences.

Below, from left: Sam Mitchell, who is involved in many community organizations which help the homeless, gives an emotional perspective about the people he serves; The Homestretch title image; Vera Zambonelli, Founder and Creative Director of Hawaii Women in Filmmaking, welcomes screening guests.

PBS Hawaii’s appeal for viewers’ help to build a NEW HOME resulted in a Kauai woodworker volunteering to personally build a part of it.

Leslie Wilcox Dean Mayer of Omao offered to PBS Hawaii create a large wooden table to our President and CEO specifications and donate the table. It didn’t take us long to accept Dean’s generous offer and settle on a lobby reception desk, to be seen by all who enter the new building. Our architect, Sheryl Seaman of Group 70 International, drew a sketch and sent it to Dean. PBS Hawaii supporter Dean Mayer stands next to a large slab of monkey pod wood, “This will be a statement piece, beautiful,” Sheryl which he plans to transform into PBS Hawaii’s new lobby reception desk. said. “It’s a very large desk, eight feet by three feet.” Dean, a veteran woodworker, former Coast Guard electronics tech, and avid PBS “There’s a lot of motion Hawaii viewer, is now busy coaxing a desk from the wood. And television is about Dean’s lobby reception desk will feature the “natural edge” of the tree trunk. “I have a special brushing tool from Japan which allows me to images.” take away the softer growth and leave the hard wood edge,” he says. - Sheryl Seaman Dean is delighted with the wood’s “swirly grain.” “There are a couple of patterns that look like breaking waves which I might use in the front panel,” he said. Says architect Seaman: “There’s a lot of motion in monkey pod grain. So much imagery in it. And television is about images.” Perfect fit. One never knows what form help will take. In this case, it will be a gorgeous, handcrafted monkey pod table, from Kauai with aloha. Thank you, Dean!

Slabs of monkey pod are loaded onto a forklift and stacked with wooden separators before being transported.

A Surprise Visit From Two Masters magine being at home, and you hear a polite Iknock on your door. Standing on your porch are two of Hawaii’s most beloved musical artists. “We’d like to play some music for you,” they offer. That’s exactly what happened when Richard Ho‘opi‘i and George Kahumoku Jr. dropped by the PBS Hawaii studio. They sat down, busted out their ukulele and guitar, and entertained us with their music. In Na Mele: Richard Ho‘opi‘i and George Kahumoku Jr., George, with his mellow slack key guitar and soothing voice, performs alongside Richard, with his never-ending smile and his beautiful falsetto. Between the songs, Richard and George trade the stories of their lives and their music. Introducing “Puamana,” Richard reminisces about kumu hula Aunty Emma Sharpe: “I was still in grade school in Kahakuloa when I used to view her halau and listen to her beautiful voice and her wonderful musicians.” George pays tribute to Kui Lee, who “gave me my first chance at eleven years old,” with a lovely NA MELE rendition of “I’ll Remember You.” Other songs they Monday, April 20, 7:30 pm share are Richard’s tribute to Genoa Keawe, “I Ali‘i From left: Richard Ho‘opi‘i and George Kahumoku Jr. No ‘Oe,” and George’s own composition, “Mohala.”
