R. P. Bilan Review Article Canadian Poet-Critics Much recent Canadian criticism has centred on the question of what is distinc tively Canadian in our literature. D. G. Jones' Butterfly On Rock and Margaret Atwood's Survival are the most notable examples of the kind of criticism that has become fairly dominant. Eli Mandel's Another Time1 and Dennis Lee's Savage Fields2 both break with this pattern, but in very different ways. Mandel returns to what has been the traditional task of the poet-critic: he attempts to explain, and to create a taste for, new kinds of poetry, and he explores, from a different angle, many of the concerns of his own poetic work. Dennis Lee, on the other hand, takes the role of the poet-critic in a new direction. Savage Fields is a decidedly theoretical and speculative book and examines, finally, more than literature. One might well have expected, from the author of Civil Elegies, a politically-oriented criticism, but Lee goes beyond any narrow nationalist focus and presents a radical inquiry into the very basis of western civilization. While Mandel and Lee, then, write very different kinds of criticism, they both, essen tially, have the same central concern-not with the Canadian identity, but with the nature of modernism. The appeal, and to some extent the strength, of Mandel's criticism is obvious. He moves beyond narrowly focused explication and raises larger questions not only about modernism, but also about the nature of literature and about the place and value of literature in contemporary life. -

He succeeded Dennis Lee in this position so that some authors' files may contain correspondence from the latter. Brown edited about thirty books of poetry, including works by Roo Borson, Lorna Crozier, Mary di Michele, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Douglas LePan, Susan Musgrave and Al Purdy. Some manuscripts are included with the correspondence. Manuscripts for which the authors sought Brown's editorial and critical suggestions may contain lengthy comments which, in many cases, resulted in the works being revised and later pUblished. 3 MS. Abstract Marian Engel, the most famous women author in Canadian Literature and social activist has made a revolutionary attempt in changing the perspectives of her readers on sexuality and stereotypes in her most controversial novel Bear. The wide criticism of the novel itself is its success that has sharply pierced in the readers’ minds to call for a change in their attitudes. The convention of women being seen as an object is challenged by her attempt and it also forms the underlying theme of the novel. Hence, the paper argues how Marian has made women empowerment through sexuality possible through her work and how sexual politics and body politics played by her protagonist Lou’s life defeat the male chauvinism. The paper further studies the character Lou’s gratification of sex as a means of purifying factor both physically and psychologically. The symbolic elements that elevate the novel to the level of classical work or a folk tale have been well identified in the paper. Key words: Sexuality, sexual politics, Self-empowerment, feminism. Introduction Self-empowerment is nothing but taking control of oneself, having clear goals, understanding one’s strength and weakness and making the positive choices. -

In a public library--which Dickens would have relished--in Fredericton, there is still in circulation a book which Dennis Lee would probably prefer to have off the shelves. It is entitled First Flowering: A Selection of Prose and Poetry by the Youth of Canada (Toronto: Kingswood House, 1956), edited by Anthony Frisch. It is everything that the imagination will allow. In it, though, is this poem by a young poetaster, Dennis Lee "age 16, University of Toronto Schools, Grade XII. " FREE VERSE So your rhyme Is a crime; And your beat Has n--4 feet And doesn't match the line before either. Then write in free verse--you can put whatever you want to in it. You've not got to rhyme But any time You want to, it's quite all right. And your metre Should make the reader Cry. That's modern. And put, in punctuation! Marks, wherev,er you wouldn?t expect, them. And leave them out in all the others that s for effect And then you can have great long lines that really don't mean very much although actually that doesn't matter. Or little Wee shor T things That Mean even less Because You ve Run out of ink part way through. Just so long as you seem very deep and abstruse. -

Is Technology a Threat to Education? The Contribution of George Parkin Grant H. D. Windhorst, B.A. (Han.), B. Ed. Department of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Education Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education Faculty of Education, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario €)July, 1995 Abstract The writings of George Parkin Grant (1918-1988), a Canadian political philosopher, were analyzed according to his view of the relationship between technology and education. Grant's life was summarized to provide a context for understanding his ideas. His definition of technology - the co-penetration of knowing and making -- was conceptually analyzed and placed within a reading of his work that ascertained a progressive development of this definition over three distinct phases in his academic career. Grant's implicit vision of education, grounded in Christian and Platonic epistemological assumptions, was explicated and unified around his idea of the interdependence of knowing and loving. From a comparison with John Dewey's concepts of technology and education, Grant and Dewey were found to be in substantial agreement concerning the nature of modern technology, but in profound disagreement over the meaning of an educative experience. Grant's qualified, affirmative response to the question of this thesis -- Is technology a threat to education? -- was found insightful in helping to clarify some foundational issues in educational research.
