Date of submission: 1.4.2011 Desired presentation format: talk Background in psychoacoustics Timbre, the colour or quality of a sound, is differentiated from pitch and loudness. The results of psychoacoustic studies (similarity ratings, multidimensional scaling) have limited practical usefulness. Relatively little research has addressed the large vocabulary of words and phrases used by musicians to describe instrumental and vocal timbre (Bellemare & Traube, 2006; Garnier et al., 2007). Prem and Parncutt (2007; 2008) listed 250 timbre descriptors used by six professional female jazz vocalists during lessons and when describing recordings. Background in jazz research Sound is a holistic term that includes timbre, timing, articulation, musical style, and musical context or accompaniment. Research on jazz sound highlights its central importance for the performance and character of jazz. It is difficult to describe sound directly so we often use metaphors. Jazz singers have a large and colourful vocabulary of words to describe sound, including e.g. Mickey Mouse, sexy, laid back, nasty, focused, and open. There is no clear boundary between timbre and other musical parameters in this vocabulary. Sound in jazz singing also depends on corporality - the human body and the physical environment (Prem and Parncutt, 2008). Jazz singers and teachers use their vocabulary intuitively to achieve interpretive goals; they seem to be unaware of its artistic importance and extent (Prem and Parncutt, 2007). -

VICENTE The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China [email protected] orcid.org/0000-0001-5450-2055 Itineraries of Enlightenment: Whirling Dervish Shows, Ethnographic Reflexivity, and Tourism in Egypt and Turkey ABSTRACT By the year 2010, both Turkey and Egypt had achieved tremendous KEYWORDS success in growing their tourism markets, in part by turning to Sufi Ethnography spiritual and musical practices, which had by then been internally rehabilitated after being historically met with suspicion or outright Reflexivity suppression even as they gained a global following in the New Sufi music Spiritualties and World Music arenas. Taking the case of the so-called Tourism ‘whirling dervish show,’ this article traces how its characteristic ‘dance’ was strategically used to promote tourism and how rituals featuring it Turkey were adapted for presentation to ever-bigger audiences coming from Egypt abroad. Based on ethnographic research conducted in Cairo and throughout Turkey, the article demonstrates how binary distinctions between tourist and pilgrim, sacred and profane, and local and foreign, become quickly blurred or contested at these shows and in other sacred settings involving travel. Further embedding the musical ethnographer within these vagaries, the article seeks two main ends: to call for an ethnomusicological method that better accounts for tourists and their subjective experiences and, thereby, to also encourage more open reflexive framework in which the fieldworker working in tourist and tourist-like settings can better take stock of their own positionality while in situ and when engaging in the writing of ethnography. -

It takes as its focus the work of the Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo, who has been publishing since the 1950s and is universally considered an important figure in contemporary Hispanic literature. After contextualising recent debate concerning the literary canon, I discuss the influences and paradigm shifts that have conditioned reception of Goytisolo’s work, bringing him to prominence both inside and outside Spain. The study then addresses the strategies that the author himself uses in his novels to encourage debate and criticism by the institution. Whilst the second and third chapters analyse the distance between reader and novel, focusing on the difficulty of understanding both form and content in Makbara, the following two chapters study Goytisolo’s desire to situate his work in the canon through autobiographical and intertextual references. Analysis is both metacritical, in its examination of critics’ assumptions, and also textual, through its focus on Goytisolo’s novels. To conclude, the thesis demonstrates the symbiotic relationship of the academic institution and the writer, with the literary canon as the key that unlocks their common history. -

Life of Rumi
Life of Rumi Reason is powerless in the expression of Love. Love alone is capable of revealing the truth of Love and being a Lover. The way of our prophets is the way of Truth. If you want to live, die in Love; die in Love if you want to remain alive. I silently moaned so that for a hundred centuries to come, The world will echo in the sound of my hayhâl It will turn on the axis of my hayhât (Divan, 562:7) The name Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi stands for Love and ecstatic flight into the infinite. Rumi is one of the great spiritual masters and poetical geniuses of mankind and was the founder of the Mawlawi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam. Rumi was born in Wakhsh (Tajikistan) under the administration of Balkh in 30 September 1207 to a family of learned theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family travelled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. When his father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi, 24 years old was an already accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences. He was introduced into the mystical path by a wandering dervish, Shamsuddin of Tabriz. His love and his bereavement for the death of Shams found their expression in a surge of music, dance and lyric poems, `Divani Shamsi Tabrizi'. Rumi is the author of six volume didactic epic work, the `Mathnawi', called as the 'Koran in Persian' by Jami, and discourses, `Fihi ma Fihi', written to introduce his disciples into metaphysics. -
