Singing in English in the 21st Century: A Study Comparing and Applying the Tenets of Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2015, 171 pp., 6 tables, 21 figures, bibliography, 141 titles. The English diction texts by Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff are two of the most acclaimed manuals on singing in this language. Differences in style between the two have separated proponents to be primarily devoted to one or the other. An in- depth study, comparing the precepts of both authors, and applying their principles, has resulted in an understanding of their common ground, as well as the need for the more comprehensive information, included by LaBouff, on singing in the dialect of American Standard, and changes in current Received Pronunciation, for British works, and Mid- Atlantic dialect, for English language works not specifically North American or British. Chapter 1 introduces Marshall and The Singer’s Manual of English Diction, and LaBouff and Singing and Communicating in English. An overview of selected works from Opera America’s resources exemplifies the need for three dialects in standardized English training.

It’s a sensory overload: a barrage of smells, sounds, and sights that greet any visitor in a truly Philadelphian way. It’s loud, proud, and in-your-face. Philadelphians aren’t known for being a quiet people—a trip to an Eagles game will quickly confirm that. The city has come to be defined by a multitude of iconic symbols, from the humble cheesesteak to the dignified Liberty Bell. But while “The City of Brotherly Love” evokes hundreds of associations, one is frequently overlooked: the Philadelphia Dialect.

The stereotypification of New York City English speakers has largely been the cause of this negative evaluation, in that the features of the accent, as well as the unique New York discourse style, have long been utilized by actors and comedians to create characters of uneducated, uncultured provenance, as well as, all too often, unscrupulous behavior.

His mentor and only friend, DON, is a retired gangster with a parallel desire to leave the former world behind. But as Sam tries to balance revenge with reconciliation, he is drawn into the shadowy world he had left behind. Can Sam undo his mistakes before losing what he came back to save? - 1 - U N D O I N G D I R E C T O R ’ S S T A T E M E N T The story of UNDOING came to me upon my return from working overseas. A few years ago, I spent a little more than a year directing TV in Singapore. On a professional level, I found the experience to be both challenging and rewarding, however, throughout my time abroad, I became keenly aware of the disconnect between myself and my environment. Being an American-born Korean and working in a foreign country, I was missing home. The relationships and circumstances I had left behind were constantly on my mind. While working in Singapore, I was surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar faces - the Chinese production staff, the Malaysian camera crew, the Indian studio technicians, etc.

Aug08 1-12-P 9/1/08 7:43 PM Page 1 F ASHION LIFESTYLE ART ENTERTAINMENT AUGUST 2008 FREE Russell Wong is the Man The Man Issue: Justin Chon Crosses into the Twilight Top 10 Men’s Travel Destinations The Essential Man Plus: HCC Welcomes the Smithsonian yellowmags.com Aug08 1-12-P 9/1/08 7:43 PM Page 2 FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF Although we do cover men throughout the year, we specifically dedicate one issue of Yellow Magazine to men. This is the Man Issue and the featured model is the handsome and debonair actor, Russell Wong, who in many respects is the face of today’s modern Asian American masculine male. Russell will tease you with his appearance in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which is currently in theaters, and you can see more of him in Unshakable later this year and Dim Sum Funeral in 2009. He is very busy at the moment with all these roles, but we were grateful for the time he spared to give us an interview and to pose for our pictures. If Russell Wong has captured the “handsome and mature” title, Justin Chon must assuredly claim that of “cute teen heartthrob”. We interviewed Justin, who has been regularly seen on Nickelodeon’s comedy show Just Jordan and will be appearing in two films to be released this year. Cute looks notwithstanding, Justin is a serious actor and someone to watch. His film, Crossing Over, will be released on August 22nd, and covers the timely and relevant topic of immigration in the United States.

  • Strategic Representations of Chinese Cultural Elements in Maxine Hong Kingston's and Amy Tan's Works
School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts When Tiger Mothers Meet Sugar Sisters: Strategic Representations of Chinese Cultural Elements in Maxine Hong Kingston's and Amy Tan's Works Sheng Huang This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University December 2017 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgment has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: …………………………………………. Date: ………………………... i Abstract This thesis examines how two successful Chinese American writers, Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, use Chinese cultural elements as a strategy to challenge stereotypes of Chinese Americans in the United States. Chinese cultural elements can include institutions, language, religion, arts and literature, martial arts, cuisine, stock characters, and so on, and are seen to reflect the national identity and spirit of China. The thesis begins with a brief critical review of the Chinese elements used in Kingston’s and Tan’s works, followed by an analysis of how they created their distinctive own genre informed by Chinese literary traditions. The central chapters of the thesis elaborate on how three Chinese elements used in their works go on to interact with American mainstream culture: the character of the woman warrior, Fa Mu Lan, who became the inspiration for the popular Disney movie; the archetype of the Tiger Mother, since taken up in Amy Chua’s successful book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother; and Chinese style sisterhood which, I argue, is very different from the ‘sugar sisterhood’ sometimes attributed to Tan’s work.
