This is the Man Issue and the featured model is the handsome and debonair actor, Russell Wong, who in many respects is the face of today’s modern Asian American masculine male. Russell will tease you with his appearance in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which is currently in theaters, and you can see more of him in Unshakable later this year and Dim Sum Funeral in 2009. He is very busy at the moment with all these roles, but we were grateful for the time he spared to give us an interview and to pose for our pictures. If Russell Wong has captured the “handsome and mature” title, Justin Chon must assuredly claim that of “cute teen heartthrob”. We interviewed Justin, who has been regularly seen on Nickelodeon’s comedy show Just Jordan and will be appearing in two films to be released this year. Cute looks notwithstanding, Justin is a serious actor and someone to watch. His film, Crossing Over, will be released on August 22nd, and covers the timely and relevant topic of immigration in the United States. Speaking of immigration, a very important travelling exhibit will make a stop in Houston in August. I recently experienced Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon in San Jose, California. It captures the essence of what Vietnamese Americans endured when they left their country en route to their new home in the United States. While I was in the first wave of refugees and did not suffer through the trying times of those who followed on the boats, it is eminently clear how extraordinarily important this exhibit will be to those who did and to those interested in gaining a better perspective of that period. Finally, our health editor, Ivy Yang (whose blog is mooger.com), shares the secrets of longevity. While you may already know that reducing stress, having a balanced diet and exercising are critical components, Ivy tells us that making love Photo by Collin Kelly is also part of the mix. In fact, she offers some numbers that would suggest that it could replace the need for exercising as much. That’s probably the perfect statistic to have in our Man Issue! Date: ………………………... i Abstract This thesis examines how two successful Chinese American writers, Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, use Chinese cultural elements as a strategy to challenge stereotypes of Chinese Americans in the United States. Chinese cultural elements can include institutions, language, religion, arts and literature, martial arts, cuisine, stock characters, and so on, and are seen to reflect the national identity and spirit of China. The thesis begins with a brief critical review of the Chinese elements used in Kingston’s and Tan’s works, followed by an analysis of how they created their distinctive own genre informed by Chinese literary traditions. The central chapters of the thesis elaborate on how three Chinese elements used in their works go on to interact with American mainstream culture: the character of the woman warrior, Fa Mu Lan, who became the inspiration for the popular Disney movie; the archetype of the Tiger Mother, since taken up in Amy Chua’s successful book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother; and Chinese style sisterhood which, I argue, is very different from the ‘sugar sisterhood’ sometimes attributed to Tan’s work.

While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below).
