Many thousands of people have been employed across the different modes of transport over the years, but unfortunately relatively few records survive because there is no business or statutory requirement to keep them beyond a few years. Before then, public transport in London was run by many different companies operating the buses, trams and underground railway lines. You might know your ancestor’s job from a certificate or photograph. If you know where they lived in London, you could use that as a starting point to identify their employer. Be aware though that in the past people often walked long distances to go to work.

Credit must be given to Frank Pick (1878-1941), the head of London Underground in the 1910s and 1920s, who went on to become head of the newly-created London Transport in the 1930s, laying the foundations for outstanding de­ sign recognised the world over. He became Chairman of the Council for > Art and Industry, during which time he advised the Post Office on stamp London Underground Map Designed by Harry Beck design. It was in 1933 that Harry Beck devised his Underground map, strip­ ping it of all except the essentials to help those using the system find their way around. During the years that the Underground system was growing, probably no one thought of using postmarks as a means of publicity. However, the centenary of its beginnings was justification, with the slogan ‘1863-1963 Underground A Century in London’s Service’ used from 20 May to 16 June 1963 at 46 London offices. Annual Leave 25 days annual leave plus 8 days bank holidays from date of joining. There is a pro-rata entitlement for part-time staff. Childcare Vouchers The museum offers all eligible staff the opportunity to exchange part of your gross salary for childcare vouchers. You can exchange up to £243 a month (£55 per week) of pre-tax earnings which is then converted into Childcare Vouchers (no NI or tax is paid by you on this amount). Season Ticket Loan An interest free loan available to staff to purchase an annual season ticket for travel on public transport to and from your place of work. Cycle to Work Scheme The museum offers a scheme to enable you to spread the cost of a bike over a year and save on tax and national insurance. Death in Service Benefit The museum maintains Death in Service insurance cover which pays four times your annual salary to a nominated next of kin upon completion of a nomination form. Eye Test The museum will contribute up to £20 for an annual eye test. Pension All eligible staff will have access to the Design Museum Defined Contribution Pension Scheme.
