THE MUSIC OF NEIL DIAMOND Ferguson Center for the Arts November 7; 7:30 p.m. One of the best-selling singer/songwriters of all time, Neil Diamond, gave us unforgettable Top Ten hits like “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “Song Sung Blue,” “America” and “Desiree.” The VSO has invited Jay White, who has performed more than 2,000 Neil Diamond Las Vegas casino shows, to perform with us in a tribute show for true lovers of the Neil Diamond mystique. CIVIL WAR ROUND TALK – BUILDING OF THE USS MONITOR The Mariners’ Museum and Park November 8; 12:30 p.m. Visit the Museum on Friday afternoon to enjoy lunch in the Mariners’ Park Café and stimulating Civil War discussion with renowned historian, John Quarstein. There is no charge to participate. Lunch will be available for purchase at the café! Even before the contract was signed on October 4, 1861, to build the ironclad Monitor, construction was underway. Numerous contractors were involved in the ship’s rapid construction with the primary builders being Continental Iron Works, Novelty Iron Works, and Delamater Iron Works. These builders used a host of subcontractors; yet, they missed their 100-day deadline. Nevertheless, USS Monitor was launched on January 30, 1862, and was able to leave New York on March 6, 1862. CIVIL WAR LECTURE: ROBERT SMALLS AND CSS PLANTER The Mariners’ Museum and Park November 9; 2:30 p.m. On the evening of May 13, 1862, enslaved wheelman Robert Smalls disguised himself as CSS Planter’s captain and slipped past five Confederate forts to surrender to the Union blockade ship USS Onward off Charleston, S.C. He took his family and several other crew members’ families behind Union lines to help attain their freedom. Smalls then served the Union as a pilot on Planter as well as on other ships such as the ironclad USS Keokuk. After the war he served three terms in Congress and was one of South Carolina’s leading African American citizens until his death in 1915. Presented by John V. OYSTER ROAST 2019 Virginia Living Museum November 9; 3 p.m. Enjoy all-you-can-eat fresh local Virginia oysters, fried seafood, chowder, dessert buffet, craft beers, wine, full bar, DJ/live music, commemorative glass, raffles & more at the Virginia Living Museum’s eighth annual Oyster Roast! The VLM Oyster Roast is an official Virginia Green Festival. As guests enjoy fresh Chesapeake Bay oysters, over 38 bushels of shells will be collected during the event. These shells will be shipped to the VCU Rice Rivers Center in Richmond, VA and will age in storage for nearly a year before being placed in seeding tanks. After seeding, baby oysters will attach to the shells. Each shell may contain 10-15 spat, which would result in approximately 300,000 oysters being returned to the Chesapeake Bay. Food will be provided by Mathews Lions Club, Waypoint Seafood & Grill, and Sam Rust Seafood. Desserts by Culinary Institute of Virginia Students. Sip on a glass or two of wine from Breakthru Beverage, beer from M. Price Distributing Company, or try St. George's Brewing Co. Oyster Beer. Tickets: $55, Age 21 and up. Tickets include commemorative glass and two beverage tickets for beer or wine. *Ticket price will increase to $65 the week of the event. STARGAZING/LASER EVENING Virginia Living Museum November 9; 7 p.m. Every second Saturday of the month enjoy free stargazing beginning at sunset. This Saturday munch on FREE food and participate in out-of-this world activities! Free observing begins at approximately 7pm. Activities and food are free. Stargazing is weather dependent. Several telescopes are set up on the grounds and staff astronomers are available to help visitors identify objects in the night sky. The evening also includes a planetarium program and several laser shows. Laser shows provide music to both the eyes and ears. The museum has an incredible state-of-the-art laser system that splashes brilliant high-color LED laser light all across the entire surface of the dome. Plus, there’s music to suit every taste.
